Is it important to have a girlfriend/boyfriend? Think of your situation now, as a teenager, in high school, working on learning English as well as learning other subjects. Where does having a personal relationship with someone - someone more than a "friend" - fit into your life? What do your parents think? (Does that matter?)

- I have been a language teacher (ESL/ELL, French) for 30 years. I have taught in public and private schools, immersion programs, refugee programs, adult/continuing education, elementary, middle, and high school as well as university. Currently I teach ELL at a high school somewhere in New England.
It's not important for me to have a boyfriend. I can learn English by talking with my friends. I think that having a boyfriend sometimes fits into my life and sometimes not. Some student have a boyfriend or girlfriend in high school, but a lot of teenagers wait until going to college. My parents don't mind if I have a boyfriend, but they want me to concentrate on my studies.
ReplyDeleteCurrently we live in a modern and social communicating world. Facebook, twitter, and blog, those inventions give teenagers more opportunity to contact with each other. I hold the opinion of that it’s not a good idea to have a boyfriend before I get into the college. I think as a high school student, my goal is to get a good grade at school and keep myself in a good shape. That means I need to spend most of my time on learning English and all those classes I am taking and doing some sports. Anyway, there are some other reasons that make me don’t want a boyfriend. Just so you know, most of Chinese families are so traditional, same with my family. I don’t think they would like to see me having a boyfriend when I am still a teenager. You know, it’s always not a good idea to make you parents angry. I am a normal girl, so I think I would like to have someone more than a “friend” to fit in my life and help me get through all those difficult moments in the future. But for now, I think I prefer to just be a “nerd”…

ReplyDeleteI am honored that I have many friends and they are all very good. We always stay together to play, to learn, to chat, I think it is wonderful to meet and know them. But I have an important person who I love in my heart. Now I left China to America, but I know he is waiting me in China. So I will go back after graduation. I know the puppy love may effect my studies, but I can put this emotion in my heart. Now, I and he are too young, so we need to make ourselves be better. When we reach appropriate age, when we become mature, when we get good futures, we will tell our parents.
ReplyDeleteI think he is my support. I know he can't help me due to the distance, but when I hear or see the things about him, I will still have belief to keep myself to work hard.
My parents agree me to have a boyfriend, but my mother say" if you have, you should tell me and I need to meet the boy. If I think he is an excellent boy, that's ok! I mean you can have a good boyfriend."
I think best friends is best choice in the high school.Before I came to America,I have girlfriend in China.Long time can't meet problem also saw!After think,I choose good bye.Maybe it's little sad,but my life is normal.My parents agree I have girlfriend anytime,and they often ask me about this,but I think it's not important now becauce I have lots of best friends!!
ReplyDeleteIt is not so important.But it is really good to improve your English if your girlfriend or boyfriend is foreign.Because when you are in relationship you always talk with her or him.So in that way you would speak a lot and you improve your English.But in highschool it could make a trouble for you.For example if you are texting in the class with him or her the teacher can takes your phone away.So you should not do that.Anyway i think in relationship the couples should be like each other.So when you choose your partner the important think for me is how they are like each other.For example for me i love sports and music.If i will get marry she has to love music and sports too.And my parents dont say anything about my relationships except marriage.

ReplyDeleteI really do think having a boyfriend is important. It is true no matter what time period it is in your life - high school, college, working…whatever. Because you cannot force love, as well as when to encounter someone you love. You have to accept it when it come across to you. For me, having a relationship is kind of an commitment to the person I love, and it is a way to learn how to communicate with others. It force you to grow up. You cannot be a little kid in a relationship, you will have to accommodate yourself to your boyfriend, you will have to sacrifice your time, your money, you will have to learn to love. Love is literally part of your life, or even one of the most important value in human without a doubt. The best way to learn what is love, is to love someone. My parents don't mind if I have a boyfriend. They may not share the viewpoint with me, but they never forbid me to have a relationship. Despite the fact that having a boyfriend is going to affect my school work, it could be either positive or negative. Moreover, your boyfriend is the one who understand you, who take care of you, and be with you when you need it. A couple could encourage and make each other better, or either text and call each other 24 hours a day and don't do the work they have to do. It's all about making choice. Wouldn't it be sweet if a couple share a common goal and work very hard together for it?

I liked a boy in China for three years when I was in middle school. We are good friend. But he didn't like me. After I told him I like him he did't talk to me. I didn't believe in love any more at that time.
I came to America represents my restarting. I hate education in China so much and I can take some bad relationships away. I just know I have to work hard now. My family is not so rich. My father's company is not good now. It's more and more difficult for him to make money. He is a power to support our family. If I have a boyfriend now he will effect me at all areas.So I can't concentrate on my studying. Maybe my ability is not enough.I have many many good friends in China. They are so nice and they are all waiting for me to come back. I always miss them. They are better than a boyfriend.I went with them to watch Titanic once.I love Leonardo so much. If I have a boyfriend like Leonardo I will be glad to die. America boys are nice.But tell the truth some of them are not friendly. As far as I am concerned one of the advantage of having an American boyfriend is that I can improve my English. We are young.We still have much time to find a lover. Now I don't worry about it.
It is important for me to have a girlfriend. My girlfriend helps me a lot. She is very smart and kind. We both study abroad. When I miss home, she can stay with me. I think she can let me to study hard. My girlfriend is also my best friend. She knows me well. She is a part of my life. I cannot live without her. Our parents agree us to be together. They think we are helpful for each other. We have been together for two years. For some people, they cannot study when they have boyfriends or girlfriends. But I can study harder with her.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion to have a girl friend is important, Everyone’s parent will die one day but my girlfriend is peer to me she won't die much earlier than me, for this reason we can have more fun time together. When you love each other both you and your girlfriend won’t speak a lie to each other, I think the word “home” is meaning to people trust each other. Everyone needed a home to have a rest, everyone need a home to shout out their trouble and everyone need a home if they fall in their life. i think have a boyfriend is important when you are a teenager cause you have to experience and is the best age to do it , a boyfriend don't fits in my life .Everyone need somebody to love and all of us wants to be loved and also if you have a boyfriend who is not of your country is better for you you can practice your english with him is an extra help.I think your boyfriend is not a obstacle for your studies if you know how to handle your time and when study and when hang out with him.I don't think you have to wait for the college for love someone ,why? and also maybe you have more than one boyfriend in your life its optional to you.You can trust in your boyfriend and growth with him he is useful for your life . ReplyDeleteIt is important for me to have a girlfriend right now. Most of my friends are males. I don't know how to get along with girls. Besides, having a girlfriend, then she can also give me some suggestion when I have something confuses me. If I have only normal friends whatever male friends or female friends, that's kind of boring. When I am sad, my friends may be busy, he(or she ) can't comfort me. But my girlfriend will cheer me up, even thought she just texts me. Sometimes, my girlfriend will wrangle with me, but I don't think it is a bad thing. It means we both are wrong and not perfect. So we can grow up thought it. And it is true that having a girlfriend will influence my study. But it is my subjective problem. I should control myself to work on studying then have fun with my girlfriend.
ReplyDeleteIn most people thinking, it is normal that we have a girlfriend/boyfriend when we are teenagers. I don't think so. But it is really hard that we are date began teenager and get married. To have a girlfriend is not good if the target is not married. Because I will pay time, money on girlfriend, it's waste and it will effect my life. If she is not coincide with me, we will have many problems between us then we will be easy to argue or even worse. Also I think money is more important than a person who is not important to me even is a passer. I can use money to earn more on stock market and have a better life. But a passer won't give me anything. I prefer get more things which I can get. Love is important but of cause it is depends on the person who stay with me. The future is more important than now.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion , I think have boyfriend in high school it isn't important with me . Because in my mind , I think my friendship is more important , especially is the friendship between me and my best friend . I can talk , share every thing with my best friend and she usually by my side when I get some problem or feel lonely . My parents don't want me to have boyfriend when I'm in high school because they want me to focus on my studying to graduate high school and can get into a good college .
ReplyDeleteHaving a girlfriend isn't important to me because studying hard is the most important thing I should do now. Actually, I have a lot of friends in TA, and I really enjoy spending time with them, so I feel content. I also think it's not appropriate to find a girlfriend when I am in TA because I have to focus on studying in TA, and I want to go a good college when I graduate from TA. My parents suggest that I should have a girlfriend in the college because if I graduate from the college, it will be harder for me to have a girlfriend, and I have to marry someone in the future. If I have to choose a place to have a girlfriend, I will choose the park because it's quiet and beautiful, and I can chat with my future girlfriend well.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I am concerned, I am a high school student and a teenager, it's not important to have a girlfriend right now. Because now my project is to learn English and have a good grade on academic. My parents hope me can challenge and improve myself and let me have more opportunity in the future, so they sent me to study in America. Although my parents won't say anything if I get a girl friend, I don't think it is good to have a girlfriend right now. Having a girlfriend will spend my time and my money. I don’t want to spend these on girls because I want to save money to buy games and spend time to play them. That’s why I don’t want to have a girlfriend right now.

ReplyDeleteI think each one has whatever they want ,but I think if you want to improve your english is good to have girlfriend or boyfriend.If that person doesn't speak your language or is from for other country of USA I think your are not going to improve your english.Just if is american you are going to improve your english.But if you don't have a girlfriend nothing happens. I think meet american people,go to the school,have friends who you can talk, try to speak the most english you can, and see the TV in english and not in your language also are the right way to learn english.
In my opinion everything related with english is better to improve your english.

In our age,as a teenager,we have power to have a girlfriend or boyfriend,and also lot of students do have a girlfriend or boyfriend. In my opinion,have a girlfriend or not is depend on ourself,just follow our own heart,we shouldn't just make a girlfriend because others told you that you need a girlfriend,we need figure out what are ourself actually feel about,and if you like some girl, and you want she to be your girlfriend,then just try your best on it,but never bother she is she doesn't like you.

I'm a teenager, it's my advantage, I have more energy than adult, and teenager's love is pure love, i mean a love without money or power.this will become a valuable experience for me. Also, i don't have lots of responsibilities like an adult, i can just follow my feeling and never think about other things.To be honest, i don't think teenager's love can keep very long,when i find out i don't like my girlfriend or she does't like me anymore, i will just let it go,i hate force someone to do something like be somebody's girlfriend, persevering is not a good thing in love, that will waste your energy and make yourself upset.
My parents don't support me to have a girlfriend, but they know I will do the things I want to do, so they just show respect to me and trust me, they think I can handle the relationship between learning and love.
Maybe it's because I don't have a boyfriend, so I don't think have a boyfriend is so important, I still feel very happy for 17 years without a boyfriend. And the most important thing is that, in today's society, women as a vulnerable groups should be to learn to independence, women should not depend on men, male centered. ReplyDeleteIt is very important to have a girlfriend in this age. I think it is the elementary emotional need. I have already had many friends here, of course not only male friends. They cheer me up when I get in trouble, they bless for my birthday. I always feel happy with that, but it seems not enough for my youth. I believe some experiences of love at teen are necessary. Perhaps it is not my life partner, but it must be an unforgettable memory in my life. Some people may say it will influence my score of course. It’s such nonsense, if I arrange my time rational. I think there is no harm. And sometimes my girlfriend will even help with my trouble of learning. In addition, I’ll never go to the ball and dance with a man! And it always occurs some of embarrassment between two opposite-sex friends embracing together. I support to have a girlfriend in high school. And I suppose that it is not dispensable, but as a premise, I have to care for her, and bring her the positive power. Meanwhile, my parents are supportive with my idea. They think it is logical unless my score degrade gradually. Fortunately, I never disappoint them and they are enlightened enough that they never care for who my girlfriend is. ReplyDeleteI don’t know how to answer this question because I don’t mind if I have a girlfriend. I don’t have any experiment to find a girl friend, and I don’t find some girl I like. At least in this year, I don’t want to think about this thing. Maybe when I have a girlfriend, my live will become more interesting than before, but I think I will lose a lot of free time. This year is an important year because I have my future plan. I must adapt lots of new things in this year, like study, language and lifestyle, so I don’t hold this is a good time to think about girlfriend. My parents agree me to find some girl I really love, and she really loves me. Before she appears, I only can wait the fate that ties people together. When does she appear? Who knows?

I think it is not very important for me. I haven’t had a girlfriend now. I think as a high student, we should look forward to get a good grade instead of getting a good girlfriend. Anyway, even if I have a chance to get a girlfriend, I don’t really think I have enough time to keep that relationship last long since we both need to spend time on homework and all those things are going on in the school. I also think my parents won’t allow me to have a girlfriend, they just always think I am too young to do that. Yeah, I think that’s why I don’t want a girlfriend. I hope my girlfriend can stay with me forever.
I think it depends on personal circumstances. If you think having a boyfriend or girlfriend can help you and make you feel happy, so just do it. everyone has feelings. Sad, happy, and these feelings need a person to share. Parents sometimes can't get the same feeling, so at that moment having a boyfriend or girlfriend maybe will be better.

For some people, having a boyfriend or girlfriend is not a good idea for them because they can't control themselves.They don't know the goal that you with he or she need to get. People to be together because they have same thing in common or they have some thing they dream. if you really like each other,you need to have a plan to keep this happiness. Everyone has a different life and choice.What kind of life you want, what kind of person you want to stay with, and they're all depends on yourself.
i think it's up to people who think they need somebody else to be together with. sometimes student think the high school life was boring, and they find a girlfriend/boyfriend. but some of the couple is love each other as well, they can not handle this feeling and be together with each other. some of parents might think their child need to prepare for the college or work hard, so they don't have time to take care of it. but some of parents is open, and they think it is ok to have a girlfriend/boyfriend, because sometimes couple can teach each other at each courses, they can help each other improve the grades. in my opinion, i don't think a gf/bf can effect your grades, even future. and my parents don't really care about it also, so i was talk about my secret with my parents sometimes.

ReplyDeleteI think in our years we must have girlfriend/boyfriend. I don't have girlfriend now, but I must find her. If you don't have somebody who loves you then your life don't have meaning. In my country there is not so many teenagers who's parents knows about their girlfriends/boyfriends. In my country this person must be more than only girlfriend/boyfriend. If you have some plans about that person in the future, then that person can meat your family.

This is also a good opportunity to learn how to deal with the relationship. At this age have a boyfriend also can accumulate experience . You can know what kind of person is good also we can learn how to take care , understanding and love others people. In this time, we should spend time on our study not on girlfriend or boyfriend. Now it is time to study and get good grade to go to a good college, and boyfriend or girlfriend will let you pay less attention on study, then your grade down. But my parents does not mind i have boy friend because they think i am 16 years old now and i can choose have or not have. ReplyDeleteI stay in neutrality in that question. Some teenagers like the feeling fall in love with someone. They help each other and understand each other. Other hand, some teenagers don’t. They may think that is waste time. Especially as an overseas student, parents are not living with our. Lonely is the first thing I learned. It is good idea to have a boyfriend to share the sadness. But for personal opinion, it isn’t import for me to have a boyfriend. Even though it has sense of belonging when I have a boyfriend. I like everything in balance in my lifestyle. I have a lot friends are both sexuality. Having a boyfriend means I won’t have lot time with my friends as usually. Honestly I don’t know how to continue a relationship with someone more than friend. My parents want me pay more attention on my study. And I am try to get good scores.

Wherever she goes, whatever she does, there exists a nonverbally attraction which everyone can’t disregard it. Her smile is prettier than a peacock. Her voice is pleasant to listen to. With a girlfriend like this, I will be cheerful and joyful at every time. I want a girl who can encourage me when I am depressed, console me when I am hurt, forgive me when I am angry, delight me when I am sad, warn me when I am complacent. I think if my parents know I have this girl friend, they will agree and they are happy.

ReplyDeleteI don’t think it is important to have a girlfriend or boy friend when Ia in the high school. In this times, I think I need focus on our study. But I don't think have a girlfriend or boy friend is a bad thing. Maybe some of they will disturb their life but i see most of them is help each our to study or out of the predicament. Any way, I don't think have a girlfriend is fit into my life, so I don't have one. ReplyDeletePersonally, I will say I have pertinent thought about whether having a boy/girl friend, I mean some teenagers who have personal relationship with someone, can still study very well, or even better and better, while some other people are not jealous about this thing, they believe that it doesn't matter.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I am concerned, sometimes the problem is not if it 's important to have one, but is whether you can handle it, which means whether you do not need to worry if this thing will have a bad influence on you life and study. Generally speaking, this is very necessary, because you cannot just catch at the shadow but lose the substance.
But then again, having a girl/boy friend sometimes helps teenagers control their emotion and temper better and know more extra things.
In a sense, I believe every teenagers should think over whether it is suitable for them to have a girl/boy friend or not by considering their own situation, otherwise that is just a stupid behavior.

They think that having a girlfriend is wasting time for their child, so they tell their child that the only thing you need to do is learning, learning and learning. I think the reason why most Chinese is doing so good in the test is because their parents only care about the grade that they got in the school not their interest or their future goals. In my opinion, it is really necessary for all the boys to have a girlfriend during the high school. First of all，did you ever think that knowing how to deal with people is a kind of knowledge? I don’t believe that only the things from the book are called knowledge. For example, for the things that I am learning now probably I will not use it in the future, but the ways of getting along with others will be more useful in this society. Learning how to deal with a girl is the most difficult thing. You have to become a positive person and show the best of you to her; otherwise the relationship will be broken up anyway. The only way to understand the girls is to deal with more girls but not in the same time, because all the girls have totally different characters and you cannot figure out everything in a single time. I don't think have a girl/boyfriend is important to us. Have a girl/boyfriend is not necessary, I don't think have a girl/boyfriend will make life better. As for the influence on learning,we have good example, but we also have bad. I think this kind of thing is not fixed the answer varies from person to person. ReplyDeleteFirstly, I think have a American girl friend will improve our English communication skill and learn some American life style. It will be good for us to live in American.
Secondly, we are the international student and we only have a little time go back our country, and sometimes we might have a little homesick, so have a girl may be a good way to release our homesick.
That's my reason why have a girlfriend is a Important thing.
Well, I had lots of girl friends before. And I think I know what kind of girl is the girl I want to get marry with. So I found an fiancé. She was my primary school classmates. But she's brilliant, she's in university in US as senior with scholarship. I will marry her after I graduate from university. My parents support me that. And she helped me a lot. We always skyping when we studying to make sure we are not doing something else. And she helped with a lot with problems I met in academy. I think have some relationship experience is not something bad, but you have to make sure it won't start andy bad effect to your study.
ReplyDeleteI want to get a girlfriend, but I don't think geting a girlfriend can help anythings about studying. I had a girlfriend before I come here. She really changed me a lot, and I began to enjoy my school life with her. But it doesn't include studying, so I didn't get any better in my grade. Getting a girlfriend has some advantages too. It can let me learn more things about girls. Let me know how to get friends who are girls. In my life, I also need some friends of different gender. As a boy, I think gettiing a girlfriend can improve me about many things. Let me know how to taking care other people. My parents disagree me to get girlfriend, and I know the reason. Maybe in their mind studying is all. Studying can get a good grade, good grade can go to a good university, and then I can get a good job. It is wrong. In the future I will have a family, I need to look after my wife son and my parents. I don't want to be a man who just know studying, and I also don't want my wife or son say"you just know work, we need your concern." So I think getting a girlfriend is helpful for me.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, have a girlfriend for me is important. Because I am a person that who need to always stay with me and talk with me. But I always don't know how to keep the ship from each other. My parents don't care if I have a girlfriend. They think girlfriend can help me in my life. By the way, we are too young. We don't what is love and how to love. But girlfriend can always give me more than the other people to give. I think girlfriend is important for me in my life.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. Many of you say that having a girlfriend/boyfriend is not important, that studying is most important for now; others think that getting into a personal relationship w/ the opposite sex is important because you need to learn about relationships now, when you are young. Parents, it seems, will go along with their children's decisions.
ReplyDeleteWell, I have a girlfriend now, and we always take video chat. We talk about our friends, family, school and something funny. Both of us are going to graduate from the high school, and the big pressure make us fell sad sometimes, but when we fell tired and sad, the communicate always can help us out, both of us will encourage each other. if the relationship between boyfriend and girlfriend is good for each other, always can help each other and also can make themselves getting better and better at schoolwork and lifetime, I will say it is great to have a girlfriend/boyfriend.

My girlfriend is junior at college,and when she fell sad i helping she.But now i have first hockey and study, she everytime help me with homework our she watch my hockey games. But i not see my girlfriend long time, because i have hockey here and school. But also i will say it is okey when you have girlfriend/ boyfriend.
