Journal Question #9

Happy New Year!   Here's an image to say goodbye to 2012: Mars.  I don't know why it struck me as a good image to end the year with - maybe something about the spirit of exploration and adventure.  Anyway, no need to post a comment, but feel free to leave a message for 2012 if you want to.

Journal Question #8

This is a picture of Stonehenge, an ancient site in England of massive stones arranged in a circle, taken during the northern hemisphere's shortest day of the year, which will be December 21st this year.   While no one is absolutely sure why the stones at Stonehenge are placed the way are, it is safe to assume the ancient people were interested in the sun - its appearance and disappearance, both each day and over the course of the year.  The winter solstice (12/21) marks the beginning of the winter season; it also marks the day the sun starts to stay up later - if only by a minute - so it's a celebration of the sun.  Write your thoughts as winter approaches,  and the sun begins its long journey north!
