Journal Question #13

This is a charcoal and pastel drawing by an artist named Susan Grossman.  It's title is "Nightfall."  I saw a show of hers at a gallery in New York over February vacation - if you want to see more of her art, go to www.susangrossman.net.  Write about this or any other drawing of Ms. Grossman's, or tell me about art you may have seen over vacation.

  1. I do think that this is a good painting, I like the color tone, unlike many other painters using orange, red or yellow trying to "show the better side of the world." This one is more realistic for me. Ms.Grossman likes to use colors like black, white with dark color, she paints people's daly life, I could see the image form her paintings. And the most interesting thing for me is that, although she uses dark colors, really dark colors, I still feel warm about the paintings, I still see "the better side of the world". All the name that she named her paintings are just cant be more ordinary, "Walking dog", "Rain walk", and "To the beach". My personal favorite is "Side Walk Crowd", I like the crowd, a little red on the truck, and the woman in the center who's holding the little gril's hand.

  2. I really like her painting. I've already looked through her website. She is such a good artist. I love the way she use colors for these paintings. Simple dark colors are everything she needs. I can recognize that most of her pictures are about city, as you said "New York?". Everything she has drawn was so real. People usually think that city is always colorful and busy. But with the colors and her talent in these paintings, i only see the street, the road are so peaceful. it likes another side of the city. I like her mirror image, against the light and to the beach.

  3. MS. Grossman is a very interesting painter. She has her own very unique technic of drawing. It seems like she didn't do any sketching with the pencil, she just set there on the street and started painting the figures. When I look at her pictures I feel depressed, i don't like the colors which she uses, they are my list favorite. It's all rainy and gloomy even though most of the time the weather in New York city is exactly how she expresses.

  4. I admiringly like Susan's drawing style, which contains primary color with black, white, and grey. Her drawing recalls me of classic film in 80s, when my parents fright for their lives. Like the "Rain Walk", it vividly brings me visualize the lifestyle of modern city--NewYork on a rainy day. Art is always required people to understand and reflect something. Gloom seems dark and melancholy, but has realistic conception. I did go to a museum and see a lot of abstract drawings. It's sad that I didn't see any painting, which could attract my attention. However, I am glad now that I know a drawer named Susan Grossman.

  5. I have viewed a lot of her drawing. Most of her drawings are showing the different streets and roads. some streets are crowded, but some are quiet and empty. I think the color can represent her drawing style, the main colors are grey, white and black. when I see her works I feel lonely and upset, I think that an important reason that her drawing will be famous, they can influence viewers' feeling. I notice that rain and umbrella always appear in her drawing, like "rain" and "big umbrella". Maybe in her life "rain" is more than "sun". Her drawing style makes the world be slow and quiet. It's enjoyable for the us now.

  6. I see some drawing of Ms. Grossman. I think all her drawing is about street and city. And a big feature of her drawing is that she only uses black and white, like the "Shopping". I don't understand art, but as a ordinary person , I don't like her style. Because the city is supposed to be colorful, especially when people are doing shopping. Nevertheless, if I got a opportunity to see her exhibitions, I would go. Even tough I don't like her style, it is worth while me to see her drawing.

  7. Frist of all, I'd like to say Ms.Grossman's drawings are great. I can see they show lots of emotion behind the drawings. She only uses a few colors to finish those drawings.Personally, I don't like her drawings at all. They are sad and dark, and some drawings are about raining like"Corner in the rain." Surely it's New York city, but it's not alive and busy at all. In my imagination nightfall is peaceful and has a golden shine. I can't see any of this picture instead of thick clouds and stronger wind. I like drawing, too. I would rather show a lovely and vivid life.

  8. in my opinion, Mr. Grossman is a fantastic artist in the world, but I don't really like Mr. Grossman's drawing style. first of all, his drawing style is all black or white. for what i believe that world is colorful and activity. most of his drawing is about city, and every one is busy doing something. that make people intensive. when i see the "Nightfall", there is only one idea jump out of my head is that it is a bad weather which makes me uncomfortable. but to be honest, Mr. Grossman's drawing style is very special.

  9. I think it is a great painting and it surprised me when I know it was drawn only by using pastel and charcoal. It is surely a black and white paint because of its material. The mood in the picture is not happy but a little bit depressing. There is no leaves on the trees and the wind is blowing. There are bold trees on the side walk and the lonely car is on its way home at the dark night. I am not a art person and cannot tell more about its meanings but it is a paint I am never going to make so I appreciate her work.

  11. I don't like art, so I will no appreciate an artist like her.
but if i have to tell something about the artist and the paintings, I will probably say that she is shy and quiet, i can perfectly know that because it is reflected in their drawings. She always draws with dark colors and that depresses me, I prefer shiny colors with a lot of vitality, but I also have to tell that she's really good doing her job, not everyone is able to do it.
I visited her page and this is one of my favorites but the one I like the most is "blind curve"

  12. This is an awesome picture, but actually i don't like the drawing. It is the first time i have seen the drawing. i saw the other art work of Susan Grossman and i think she is a good artist and she does a really unbelievable work. The picture looks like a real. My favorite picture is in New York , where a lot of people and they are doing a different things. I have seen the art when i was very young but i can't remember because my dad told me that i went to see the drawing.
The drawing is the job for people who likes art and likes hard work.
I start to like the art from the moment when i saw that picture.

  13. I actually like this "Nightfall". Although I don't know anything about her or her works, I still like this painting. It has nothing except white and black, but you won't feel it's boring! You can easily see it's night and in the fall, I think the style of the painting is dark, blue. I can tell the author was depressed and sad. I think she did very good job on the layout, half land and half sky. The trees are blowing, same as the clouds, it's really accord the topic - "Nightfall". I absolutely love it!

  14. this is a great painting i think, but the color all she draws is dark colors. i dont really like dark, because dark makes me upset. i think ms. grossman is a very disappointed people, i can tell because of the painting's theme. actually i like the painting that is more colorful than this. because a colorful painting can not makes me so upset like that. so i prefer be a cheer man because my remain life still has a lot of fun and i dont want to waste them.

  15. I really like her drawings, and her drawing style and painting technique are so unique that I start to enjoy these charcoal and pastel paintings that I never liked them before. Her drawings are novel. Sometimes, her drawings can describe a quiet park and serene road in countryside. I like one of her paintings named Corner in the Rain very much. It shows a busy corner in such a busy city. In our mind, big cities have become unconcerned and gloomy. Also, the city become more indifferent and gray in the rain, and this drawing just distinctly shows this point of view. Ms. Grossman is really a wonderful artist.

  16. I really like her painting and it amazed me when I know it was drawn by using pastel and charcoal. I like the feeling that her paintings give to us, very calm. Some people don't like her paintings they think the city should be colorful, dark and white are not the best color to describe the city, however I disagree with them, if you watch her painting carefully, you will understand the meaning of the drawing, life is normal, but isn't boring, she used some very bright color to draw some details, such as the painting "to the beach" the color of sky is very bright, maybe it means life is normal, but happy things always happend around us.

  17. I am not a good painter. But I like to enjoy a good pitch .Sometimes I can read the soul in the pitch.I don`t like Abstract.Because I can not know anything for that.My favorite painting is Van Gogh's sunflowers. I read some warm in the pitch like hope.Painting is different from photos.Painting give people the soul but photos just give us a thing or things.I like painting more than photos.

  18. i am not interesting all about arts like drawing panting and pitch.so i'm not sure what i am see in this pic so i can not feel what this pic want to see and how good about this artist.i just know maybe this pic is good pic because look like really photo and this artist maybe is very famous i m not sure because i don't know about art artist.so i think this is good drawing .

  19. I like her painting style very much when I saw her picture on the website on the first sight. I think she is a very good painter. She always uses black, white, gray to portray the New York City, I think the style of her painting is very interesting. The painting, “Against the light”, reminds me of the black and white movies of the seventies and eighties. She has many art works that describe rainy days on her website, for example, “Corner in the Rain”, “Walking Dog”, “Rain Walk”, and “Pavement Reflections”. My favorite painting is "Pavement Reflections". It shows a night view of the New York rain.

  20. From Toghrul:

For my opinion, Susan Grossman is good painter. Because, she described cloudy and windy weather very well in this picture. Also, I think that she want to share something with this picture. This picture can be from any story too. For example, she wanted to explain somebody goes some where in a autumn day in the bad weather. It can be dangerous for them. From this picture, I can imagine many things. That is why, Susan Grossman is good painter for me.

  21. I don't know who is Susan Grossman before I write this journal. A lot people think she is a great painter. But I really don't like her painting style. I think the black and white are sad color. I also don't like the feeling that her paintings give to me. I like the colorful paintings like Van Gogh's Sunflowers, Da Vinci's The Last Supper. I like that feeling. Different people have different view point to see a art work. The same painting someone likes it, someone doesn't like. In the world, there is no picture can accepted by everyone.

  22. When I noticed that the drawing was painted only by charcoal and pastel. I saw lots of her paintings and most of them are about the roads, some roads are crowded and some are empty. I don’t really understand what she wanted to show us, but I can feel the peace from the picture.

  23. I do love to appreciate all art works. They can both calm me down and make me zealous. I think an excellent picture can bring viewers into artist's mind. In other words, we can feel it. We can feel artist's emotion. In instance, this picture from Ms. Grossman gives us a chilly artistic conception. She mainly use black, white, blue, and gray. All of these are clod color. And the desolate street and cloudy weather make us feel scary and longly. But If you stare it for a longer time. Anyway, for me, I feel freedom. I feel I'm in the world. No block, no stop. Just freedom.

  24. From Stepheny:

I love the painting but it's so dark for me maybe because the painting is from NY. In my opinion, NY is a sad city, people get happy everyday but they kill themselves everyday. Like the painter, I like Raphael best, he works are a kind of peaceful and quiet. I remember one of his masterpiece is drawing about a mum staring gently at her two naughty children. This work makes me feel so sweet and totally, I started to miss my mum... so sad= =

  25. I'm not good at paint and not really interested in painting works. But I know Susan Grossman from the internet. Her use charcoal and pastel for her major works, mostly of her native New York City. Also her works have be described by "The New York Times" as “Capturing the exhilarating vitality of metropolitan street life.” I like her drawing style, even it's black and white, but I can see some color like pale blue and green in her works. It makes the picture more clear. It's different with other black wand white images. I also think it's hard to realism with this style.

  26. I really like the painting by Ms. Grossman. I visited the website and see other pictures, I really love the feeling in the painting. I think she is good at draw the human activities, in those pictures, the lines are real and solid, but she still can exhibit the movement of the people. She is really a good artist. Also, the dark environment show the country side in a quit, and peaceful place. Also, I love the picture Mirror Image very much, it is in the street, the quite place, but busy place. It is really a good painting. I enjoy in it and admire her painting technique, it such as telling about a story. I hope one day I can go see her real painting and feel the art.

  27. From Alexey:

I really like this drawing. I think it is worth it to go and see her paintings in the art museum. Even though I don't like drawing myself, I still like seeing drawings in museum.
I like the color tone. If you look on this picture, you can imagine and make up a lot of stories. You can make up a story and enjoy a drawing. This painting makes me kind of sad because the picture is in grey color. I like painting with bright colors. When I look at this picture, I can see the winter coming up. All trees lost their leaves. There a lot clouds in the sky.
I hope I can see her paintings in real life one day. They paintings are very realistic.

  28. Thanks for your comments, everyone. Most of you express strong opinions, positive and negative, about Ms. Grossman's drawings, and I enjoyed reading both your reactions and your observations about her work. If you ever get a chance, see her art in person; as is true for all art, it's better to see the work physically rather than virtually.

  29. When i see Susan's painting first time. i feel a little bit constrained, and it makes me associate the end of the world. The clouds roll up,and the sky is gray.It seems like the hurricane is coming. But i admire Susan's work a lot, because it use black and white accurately, and made the readers come into her painting. However i am not a good painter, but i can feel Susan's mind. So i think Susan is great artist. Over the vacation, i had seen a lot of great paintings in Russia, and two of them are coming from Vinci, and they are worth two hundred million dollars. But they are about religion, and display in the Winter palace. I authentically think, as a good artist , you have to demonstrate your opinion, and connect to the reader's heart. Anyway, i enjoy painting in my life a lot, though i am not a good artist.

  30. It's my first time to see Susan Grossman's picture. Susan's art is all in black and white. I really love the picture "Nightfall".I also like her another picture called "Storefront". There are two children walk with an old man looks like their grandfather. Susan use the black and white draw this picture and describe a peaceful scene. New york is a busy city and the peace looks nice. Because of her, I start to love the paintings and I hope I can draw a peaceful painting like her.

  31. During the February vacation,I went to Chicago. One of my friends study at SAIC and the biggest Art museum in Chicago is the property of her school. She gave me the ticket to AIOCM.(art institute of Chicago museum). AIOCM is a really big museum, they collect lots of art works of Monet and Van Gogh, which is really attractive to me. Monet, Van Gogh, Da Vinci is the most great artist I think.

  32. I stayed in Saco this February vacation. I did see some other kind of art. I went to the Portland Concert. When I stepped in the hall. I just saw the design of the roof. It was gorgeous! I love that design. It was just a piece of great work. I just like its classical style and shiny feeling. The delicated decorations. I love that so much.

  33. I went back China this vacation. And during this vacation, people find another Mona Lisa's smile. That painting is also from Leonardo da Vinci. I like it very much. This painting is same like Mona Lisa's Smile, but the woman is younger. This is my favorite style. But I don't like drawing, because in my childhood, my mother compulsory ordered me to learn how to draw.

  34. In this weekend, I read a news about that two Americans used 200,000 dollars bought a villa, but they found a picture which the price is 2,000,000 dollars in the cellar. What should I say? I can only say that how lucky these men are! I'm not very interested in the drawing. So I don't really care about anything about the art. When I see a picture, I can only feel this picture is good or not. But I can not give any suggestion about it. In my mind, the most famous work of art is The Mona Lisa's Smile, and I think most of guys all have the same feeling as me. It's so expensive, so old, and so noble. It will influence people to consider so many things when they see ti. Finally, I hope more people will try to appreciate the works of art, also including me. Because they're all the products of people's wisdom!

  36. Her paint is pretty awesome! It looks very real, and it gives us the impression of being at that place. During February vacation I went to Philadelphia and visited many museums down there. One of them was the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Even it was tiring, I loved it because I could check out painting made by famous people, for example: Manet, Monet, Van Gogh and Picasso. I could not imagine that I could see those paintings in a place outside Europe. It made me feel glad with the chance that I had.

  38. Actually, I'm very interested in art. Before I write this journal and see Susan Grossman's picture,I like the colorful paintings, but Susan Grossman's picture give me different feeling about black and write painting. I think she is a very interesting painter, she has her own style about painting.I have viewed a lot of her painting on the website, the picture"s color makes people dispassionate, the picture is very close to our daily life,So it also maks people thoughtful. I like her drawing.

  39. I think she is a good artist, but i don't like it. Art has long been a highly revered discipline in our world. Art exists in every aspect of our lives, whether in architecture, cuisine, or even manners. I do not like the art just like that, i like the art with the warm color. I felt warm when i saw some arts with the warm color. Monotonous gray and black will make people feel depressed. so i don't like it.

  40. From Brian Q.:

After I look through Susan's website, I really like her style. By using the simple color, she makes the drawing looks real. It's like a photo of real world. The details in her drawing are perfect. Lots of her drawing are showing the city. These drawing only have dark colors, but that is the only thing she need. She show the colorful side of the city perfectly. So I think she is a really good artist.

  41. Corner in the Rain and storefront are two of my favorite drawing from Susan. The pictures express flowing cities. Crowd walking on the rainy street., Cars waiting for the traffic lights. Otherwise the interesting thing is Susan uses a lot of dark colors on the painting. The view of the streets and irradiated light. She's style is quite impressionism. Not colorful, simple picture of our daily life, those features of Susan's drawing makes her special.

  42. Unlike most of the traditional watercolorists, Susan Grossman tended to achieve compact but not congested effect. I do not know much about modern western art, but the aesthetic view of graphic strokes of charcoal is very common in each culture. She made this paint tough, cold and clear, exhibiting a solemn Nightfall, which proffers the audience clam.

  43. Susan Grossman, she comes from an artistic family, a very artistic family. Sometimes She feels quite like the "black sheep" because I didn't seek to be an artist. Her mother is an art teacher, and in her former years, did watercolors (which she still dapples in), and jewelry design. Her dad works at a custom frame studio in Chicago. She grew up visiting her dad at work to see a client's Picasso or check out the Gerhard Richters which flank the showroom walls. Her brother is in art school, and has crazy modern talent. Most of her family are working with art, her uncle, her cousin and so on. In such a artistic family, you can easily come up what are they doing while they are not working.Even if she is not quiet like to be artist, but she still has the talent of creativity in her blood from her family.

Susan chose charcoal and pastel to do all of her works, it makes her arts so different and so special. When I saw those drawings, I felt that Her charcoals of city streets and rainy days are moving, and her talent is immediately evident. She captures the sheen of the slick streets, the wind in the air, and the hustle of the people. She captures the reflections, the glow of lights, the aura of the day, the moment. In her works of art, they seperate into two parts: The fixed sights and the moving objects. I prefer the moving objects, they give me some kinds of feeling that I am actually standing there and watching those people and vehicles pass in front of me. I admited that charcoal and pastel give unusual sense, but it let me feel that the drawings got some darkness and negative effect when they are drew in black, grey and white.

“Mirror Image” is the drawing that I like most. People is walking on the side, and their images are suitably fit in the mirror. The buildings and pipes are rightly stand in the mirror. You can's even tell which side is real or fake.

  44. I like the "Nightfall". She just use two colors to show us a windy nightfall. I very like the gothic style so block and white is my favorite color. In this picture, some people think they feel the mournful and despair. But in this picture I feel a kind of hope. When the tree fall, the day become dark, the life feel despair, a car light the way to back home. This is hope! When world become dark, never forget your goal, light your own way.
