This is a picture of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was perhaps the greatest American leader of the 20th century. In a couple of weeks, Americans will celebrate a holiday in his honor. Think about leadership: Who is a great leader, in your opinion, and why? What qualities define leadership? Are there "born leaders," or do certain people become leaders through hard work and accidents of time and place?

- I have been a language teacher (ESL/ELL, French) for 30 years. I have taught in public and private schools, immersion programs, refugee programs, adult/continuing education, elementary, middle, and high school as well as university. Currently I teach ELL at a high school somewhere in New England.
For me a great leader is that person who can fair, knowledgeable, and with an incredible understanding and experience rule his/her crew. Leaders are those people who are respectful for their wise and knowledge. Of course a great leader must know how to manipulate and control people and make them follow you, but he must use it in a right way. I wouldn’t say that people are born leaders; people are getting their destination in life by getting through some experiences and getting some knowledge.
ReplyDeleteBeing a leader had to be brave, because if you are afraid of everything, you aren't going be able to lead them and give them a life of peace. And you also has to be smart, leaders don't need to know about chemistry, but they has to know how to give his people a good life so his people does not need to afraid of going out. I think some people are born leaders, so there are bron leaders, but born leader does not mean that they are going to be a leader no matter what, it's just they have this talent that they can be a good leader or leader well. If you are not a born leader, you can also be a leader or a good leader through hard work and accidents of time and place. It's just a matter of you end up nice and peace or dead without a decent funeral.
ReplyDeleteI believe a leader should be confident and persuasive, at least he need to trust himself and let others do too. He needs to be aware about the current events that are taking place recently and what people need. There is no born leader. They have to have essential characters in them and live in the era that provide them the opportunity to change. Because if citizens are all satisfied about the government no one would like to start a revolution. I do not have a leader that impress me a lot but I do believe an adage in China that "Time creates hero." The "time" means the correct time and era for them to lead the people to get what they want.
ReplyDeleteA leader should be resourceful, resolute, and persevering. Leadership never born with one person, but experience, talent, and practice create it. These characters can build an excellent but regular leader. To become a great leader, the time and good luck is also necessary. There are so many great leaders in history, and it is too troublesome to choose only one of them. Just give one example, Mao, who was born in a farmers family, but became a great war leader as well as a poet. It is incredible to believe that a group of inform army without sophisticated weapons can rule China. So I think he is great.
ReplyDeleteI think if u want to be a leader ,you must be smart and have good management capabilities Because i think to be a leader u must be able to make everyone trust you. In China ,i think Mao was the first leader of the new China.We have a good life now because of Mao. He helped us became a good country.Since everyone trusted him,everyone wanted to be a good person .So i think if u want to be a leader u must make everyone trust you its most important quality for a leader.Mao wasn't born a leader , he worked heard and everyone tought he was a leader so they choose Mao to be the top leader of China.
ReplyDeletein my opinion, a great leader should have good management, a great leader can make a group going to be successful. a leader can’t be negative as always. his actions can create a positive morale amongst the team. this will be contagious and he will get more out of his team. a great leader need to make his team members believe they are the best and they can do anything well.a great leader also will make some rewards for his team members, such as set some money for rewards.and the last important point is a great leader have to smile all the time.
ReplyDeletei think being a good leader must be activity, clever, and friendly. The leader must know citizen well, and do everything well for citizen. The view of the point is start to think about people's benefit. In my opinion, Martin Luther King is a good leader because he saved black people to be equal. in order to think of the benefit of black people he in spite of his safety.
ReplyDeleteOh, all the leaders must appear in a certain time or a specific year for several reasons I believe. First of all, leader is decided by people. So, if one can not get people's support, one will not become a leader. Also, courage plays an important role. Leader should be brave or not afraid to say, to talk any thing, any thing! Like Martin Luther King, who was perhaps the greatest American leader of the 20th century, gave the famous speech named" I have a dream" with the danger of being killed. Furthermore, leader also requires a strong ability of having eloquence. To get empathy, the better the leader can speak, the stronger the influence the crowds would get. That's it.

ReplyDeleteIn my eyes, a good leader, he must know what his people need. he should have appeal, the power of his is less than the strength of the team. and the most important for a good leader is that he must uphold the sovereighty and interests of their own countries. as a good leader, you must always keep yourself clearly. there were so many emperors in ancient China, some good emperors development their countries well. just like Shiming Li who is the most famous emperor in China, he was so friendly and he knew what his people needed, so he made his country very well. be a good leader, you must strong your heart. these things are the key how to be a good leader.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, being a good leader must be faithful. He should be fair to everyone and everything, or people in the country will not convince him. By the way, the leader must be smart enough to solve all of the stuff that happened. I think there maybe someone is born leader, but most people should learn plenty of things to be a qualified leader.
ReplyDeleteA good leader are support to have spirit of donation. He needs to consider for people, if he doesn't help people solve the problem, he can't get the support from people. Besides a good leader must be brave, he is the representative of people, so he should protect people's benefit. Chairman Mao who was the leader of our nation. He led the people win the land and liberty in the second war. He's not only a strategist, he's also a great thinker in recent China. He wrote a lot of poems and saying. His ideology is as famous as Marxism. It's hard to be a leader, you should have outstanding leadership skills essentially, and ability to work under pressure is also important for a good leader.
ReplyDeleteI think a great leader must be assertive with an intelligent brain. He/She can easy to lead everyone into the right way. He/She must have support from people, have to listen to everybody. A leader should do somethings that it's benefit to the community. besides, he/she will have talented in management or taking a good opportunities to do something. the thing defines the quality of a leader is everybody who he/she is leading. if they feel good, happy with everything the leader have done. then it was a wonderful leader.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, a good leader should be conscientious. He is responsible for a lot of things. So he must pay a lot of attention on the things that he take charge of. Being a good leader is not only the talent that person has, but also how conscientious he is.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that a good leader should maintain good organization and leadership. Leader represent a whole good, so they should also be responsible. A good leader should have a ability to let the majority depend on the leader. For example, Steve Jobs, he is a successful business man. He managed big company which is very popular around the world. The reason that made him to become success is his leadership. He could make good connection with the employees and maintain good organizations. This example proved that good organization and leadership are a big key for a good leader.
ReplyDeleteIn chinese history, I think Zhou enlai is a good leader. Firstly, he a hero during the new china’s establishing. He is my favourity historical figures. Secondly he was an excellent diplomat and leader. Of course, he was very very good at communicating with others. Thirdly, I think he was a kind and handsome man. Certainly, most of people think so too. Fourthly as everyone, he was a frugal peason. On the living conditions, he worked hard and practice economy. The last one, he was the peason I admire and I like him very very much.

A great leader must be able to responsible for everything, Good leaders also can make people feel that they're at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. In my opinion, I think Deng Xiaoping is the most great leader in the world. He was the head of Chinese government in 1978-1992, although he didn't have a title as chairman. Many people think chairman Mao is the most great leader in new China. But actually chairman Mao is good at military, he won the war with Japan in World war II and declared war in Korea, India, Vietnam with America, India, Vietnam and won. Although he had superior military leadership, but he still made many mistakes on policies. China lost many important stuff and elites because of him, China stop develop for 20 years because of his faults. He was the first generation of Chinese leader. After he die, his fellow, Deng take the power to lead China. He start working on economics, and change China to market economy and lots of famous cities in China now was developed by his policies. I have to say, if there was no chairman Mao, there will be no new China, maybe China already split, colonial, dominate by some other countries. If there was no Deng, maybe China will be like a country like Russia or Cuba. People will be poor and we have no liberty. A great leader must make the people he lead get some benefits, and he has to be smart and he should has many experiences. Deng is sure a great leader. I think most people in China appreciate his hard work, he lead China to a big country in this world and win back Hong Kong from England, Macau from Portugal.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion,there is no born leader.I think the greatest leader is Lincoln, because he liberated the black slaves.Achieve the human equality,and became a famous leader.As a good leader,the heart should be connected to the citizens,because the leader is voted by the people,so the leader should do real thing for his country.On the other hand, if you are a normal citizen,you could become a good leader through hard-working.Lincoln is a good example, when he was young , and his family is poor and uneducated. But lincoln did not surrender,when he finished working in farm,then he will read a lot of books,and he practiced his speech ability everyday. So finally, lots of americans voted to him. And he did not let the people down,he terminated the war,also became a well-known president!

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, the great leader have to be fair, he must have good speech. I want to give you example from my country. In 1993, my country elected Heydar Aliyev as president of my country. All population of Azerbaijan love him so much. He opened many hospitals, schools. He was good about politics. He also had good speech. Every time, he called people to improve our country. And he developed our country. When he died, all Azerbaijanians cried. I was 5 years old, but I can not forget these days. And I still remember these words of Heydar Aliyev: I am proud of that I am Azerbaijanian!! I am sure that I will never forget him in my life!
Being a good leader brings many things: deep sense of justice, decision, plan your work, work harder than others, sympathy and understanding ... and one of the most important things is to seek advice from other people (who know the case) .

So in my opinion people never born as leaders only hard work will make you one, a good leader in Spain could be Mariano Rajoy (spanish president)
In my opinion, Kobe Bryant, one of the best basketball players in NBA history, is a great leader of Los Angeles Lakers. Since I saw NBA, I have begun to follow with interest in Lakers. Kobe Bryant helped his team beat opponents with his own capacity. Finally, Los Angeles Lakers has got five champions with the help of Kobe Bryant. I believe that people do certain become leaders through hard work and accidents of time and place. There is an example of Kobe Bryant. He was so hardworking that he played basketball greater and greater. Also, he was a lucky boy. His ability to play basketball was found by his high school basketball coach. All in all, his success ascribes to his hard work and the accidents of time and place.
ReplyDeleteI think no human being is born with qualities of a good leader. You have to work hard. Every one has a chance to be a leader, whether in group, or government. What's the leader? You must have to be ability of doing what others are unable to do. The importent thing is you should be confident and persuasive. A great leader should learn to listen to different opinions because the leader is voted by the people. You should know what is people want. If you never listen other people's opinions, just do something you want, I promise you will never being a leader.
ReplyDeleteI admire my grandmother. She is my leader. I learn a lot of new and helpful stuff. She was a teacher. She always helps me to do my homework if i don't understand something. She is very smart, dignified, confident, persuasive and responsible. Some day i would like to become a leader for someone. I keep learning how to live a good life. I think people are not born as leaders. If you want to be a leader, you should gain some attributes that people would like.
ReplyDeleteIn my mind, the best leader is Ying Zheng. He is born in BC 259 and dead in BC 210. He is the first people unified the China in China's history. In Michael Hart's book Ying Zheng is Seventeenth. Ying Zheng establish emperor system, unified text and weights and measures, build the Great Wall. He is very hard working and firm. He can listen the different opinions, this is not every leader can do.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think a good leader should be confident, aspiring, genial , hard working and persuasive. In addition to this, I think a good leader must love his people and be honest to them, I think Abraham Lincoln is the best leader in this world I remember he said You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time, this sentence really touched my heart, So as I thought being a good leader must do their best for every people.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, a great leader should be capacity, confident, selfless, and moral. First of all, I think the leader should be best in the team or he can combine the members in group. We always see the captain of the swimming team or basketball team is the best one. Secondly, the leader should be confident all the time even they are in trouble. Because he is the guy who lead follows deal with the problem. Thirdly, he should be selfless. He must be willing to help the people who have the problem. The last thing is he is moral. So that more and more people would follow him.

First, he was the first President of the United States in 1789, and then Washington had been a president for the next two sessions. As a leader, Washington could not act as a normal person. Whatever one is the leader of a country, a enterprise, or even if one is in a team must have a high sense of responsibility. No matter what things one does, he or she must keep in mind that he or she is not an ordinary people, his or her responsibility is to lead the people throughout the country to the right way. Therefore, as a leader, having a high sense of responsibility is the most important thing.
ReplyDeleteI particularly believe that a good leader cares more about take care of others and help them, and he doesn't care to get just own benefit, but he cares about get benefit for every single person that he is responsible for. This leader should not care about famous being a leader, but he needs to want be helpful for his group as a leader. In my opinion, Brazil hasn't been controlled by good leaders, but I think a good leader is the president of Uruguay, because he's the poorest president of the world and donates 90% of his salary to help people. I'm sure that he's a president just to help his country, because he doesn't get much money and famous being a president. It happens because he lives in the countryside and works as a farmer too. I'm sure that if we had had more leader as him, we would be living in a better world.

I think Abraham Lincoln was one of the most great leader in the United States and he help Americans out of the civil war, repeal the slaver system. In my opinion, the great leader has to have the ability to visualize what success looks like. They should do benefits for the country or the change the people's life get more happiness. the leader should be control the economic and get the best interest to the country and citizens. Also,leaders have to have the ability to understand where their organization's weaknesses and strengths are, and help the organization boost the strengths and change the weaknesses.

She graduate from Beijing Petroleum Institute, the Petroleum refining of oil refinery engineering major, college degree and senior engineer. She was a bulldozer, technicians, engineers, and then served as the director, manager. Someone said, she almost works from men. In 1988, Wu Yi was appointed Vice Mayor of Beijing. During the first few months, she is too busy to go home. In fact, Wu Yi also served as an important position, the director of the Women and Children Working Committee of the State Council, it's the highest office of the Chinese government to promote gender equality in government agencies. She said, To promote gender equality, is related to the Chinese government's international image. In 2008, Wu Yi was no longer hold any position because she was 69 years old, and she said, I hope you can forgot me completely.
ReplyDeleteI think there is nobody born to be a leader. In my opinion, leader is not represent power or money, it means more responsibility. A good leader should have a wild heart, can hear voice from others, can make good decisiones. A good leader also need put people in the most important place, put the most energy and time into improve people's life, not himself. In my mind, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt were great leaders.

He is very smart and he knows how to improve relationship between people. He has been leader for 12 years and he can be very good leader. I also like Obama.

In my opinion, I think to be a great leader must has more responsibility than other people. The great leader should always thinking about how to get more profit for people, and let people give trust to him. A great leader can do the best choice in all the situations, and to build the country more wonderful and more suitable for people to live. In the history of America, I know there are many good president. Like Lincoln, Roosevelt and Washington etc. They are all the good example to all the leaders. And people also should try their best to supervise the leader, give the biggest help to the leader. Then the country, even the world will be peaceful and beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIn all ages, a great many of outstanding leaders who sacrificed themselves for their career, country and freedom. Those leads' contribution is incomparable. For instance, Abraham Lincoln, Felix Baumgartner, and Bill Gates and so on. However, I don't want to talk about those famous leaders today. I ought to talk about you and me all the people are normal and general. Let me ask a question frist. Why you are not a leader? You might answer me that "I don' have the personality that leaders have." or " I haven't won any other people before. They beat me on the bottom." I would shout directly " This's not the truth." First things frist, The opportunity is always for the man who prepares. It's not on account of the personality you hava. If you don't afraid to be fault and eager to succeed, then you may have a chance grow up to a leader. You have to endure other distraction and never say give up. Secondly We all won the first prise when we was born in a minium probability. As the result all of us are the winer. Give more self-confident to ourself. The famous leaders they all have some charming advantages that we can learn and use. Firstly A good leader should has a good membership with other teammate. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. So get along with your buddies that's the thing you need to care about. always think for responsibility. If you want to be a leader, you have to do more work and afford more. Let the team trust you and be the important one. Perhaps they can't work without you one day. Secondly, teamspirit. It's the most importent part of leadership. Because to be a leader is not about how great you are or how much work you can do all by yourself. A team suppose to work together. Join the discuss and ofter your brilliant idea to the team and please don't forger to listen when other members are talking. Nowadays, We don't need the solo hero anymore. Just join your group and enjoy the team work's pleasure. You will find out a bunch of people who have some common with you. Last but not least, leader suffers from more perspiration than others. Don't only see the advantages leader has. We also have to know what are the disadvantages. leader soldem has personal time to relax and play. Leader affords himself more than gain and acquire.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, being a leader must have leadership, actually. But the leadership can contain many other abitilies. I think he has to have the speaking skill and good thinking skill. He has to concern about all the things will happen when working. So I think Barack Obama can win the second election because he has good speaking skill that can move people and vote for him. He also has many thoughts that are working now. He can be a good leader.

ReplyDeleteA leader who makes decisions and then always listens to any arguments about those decisions can really be a leader.In my opinion,a good leader also needs confidence in his abilities to lead first and foremost. In China,I think we have a good leader.He has great intelligence because It is hard to follow someone that is not intelligent.Anyway a great leader also needed to be clam!

He presided over the Philadelphia Convention that drafted the United States Constitution in 1787 because of general dissatisfaction with the Articles of Confederation.I believe nobody born to be a leader. In my opinion, leader means more responsibility.A good leader should have a wild heart, can hear voice from others, can make good decisiones to improve the country.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the great leader should get the most benefits in for the country and people, also, they should know what the country good at and what the country worth at. And also, the leader should promotes the good points. I think George Washington was one of the most great leader in the United States and play an important role in the independent war. And he became the first president in the United State of American.His organization lean federal government to enact judicial regulations, the establishment of the Federal Supreme Court. Tend to Federalist claims him on many issues, but strive to maintain a balance between the Federalist Party and the Democratic Republican Party, So he is a really great leader.

ReplyDeleteTo tell the truth, the person that I want to talk about is not the greatest person in the world, but in my mind. He is my father. Every daughter loves their father, so do I. My father is a manager of a company. He cares about his employees. Sometimes he make phone calls to his employees to ask if they are fine. He always visit his friends frequently. However, he spent most of the time to stay with his family. He usually spend the whole weekend with my mum and me. He makes big contribution to his company and our family.
