Journal Question #24 (2010-2011)
The title of this painting is "The Card Players," by a french artist named Paul Cezanne. Cezanne lived in the late 19th into the early 20th century. Currently, there is show of his card player paintings - he did a number of them - in New York City. How do you react to this work? Talk about its subject (4 men playing cards), its composition (3 figures sitting, one standing, the shapes of the hats, the pipes, the table, the curtain...), its colors (of course, the painting is a lot more vibrant in person), or anything else the painting brings to mind. Do you like this sort of art? Other kinds?

i like this kind of painting because it s really realistic. this is what the people playing cards look like. i think the 4th player went to bathroom. The painter is trying to say they sit there and play for a long time,but there are still people watching.so it must be interesting too
ReplyDeleteThis painting was painted by Paul Cezanne who lived in late 19th into early 20th century. In this painting, I can see there are 4 men who are playing cards. Actually just 3 men are playing cards and the other one is standing and looking at them. The painting tells me their outfit was old fashion ( because it was painted in late 19th or 20th century), the table is old and they are very concentrate in playing cards. I guess because there are just 3 positions for the game so the loser have to stand and waiting for next game. That's why everyone is very concentrate.
ReplyDeleteIt's a interesting picture, I see three poker faces with a little bit nervous, the man stand behind then looks very relax and is smoking with a pipe. I'm interested in their cloths, why they wear coats and hats in the house. I used to play Texas Poker. As long as I lose half billion in face book game, I quit. The main color is dark color, so the atmosphere is dignified, and it make people can concentrate on calculating others' cards.

It is a good painting. I like this work.This is artwork is very vivid.It feels like everything is real. The shade of the chairs and the desk based on the direction of the light,we can see that on the left side of the painting is darker than its right side. And he painted the people well, the seriousness in their faces are clearly visible.It suggests that they are probably in the deadlock of the game and everyone wants to win. The clothes they wear are kind of old-fashion,it also show the characteristics in the early 20th century! Personally,I think it is a very good painting!

ReplyDeleteI like this picture because I thought that everyone like to play poker. Poker is a really interesting game. Also that painting is great because is looks really realistic. I like a art work with a realistic style because I like really thing. So this is the reason for me, to like the realistic painting and photography.
ReplyDeleteAlso photography and motion graphic are my favorite kind of art. Because if you want to know a person you have seen in book, photography and motion graphic can help you to know what is the that person looks like. And I can regonize that person, which it is a great thing
ReplyDeleteThis painting was painted in late 19th and early 20th, it's such an old picture.I like this picture because the three poker faces,maybe when they won the game, they will won a lot of money so they all looks nervous.I like this kind of paintings ,they are realistic.It looks like you are in the picture and you are the person who are watching the game too.At the same time , you can guess what are they thinking about.Some of them are happy or some of them are sad because of the bad card in their hands.

It is a good painting in my mind. Playing cards should be an interesting entertainment. But in this case, it is a excited game and makes people nervous. They may bet money so all of them want to win and they are afraid of lose. So the basic color in this painting is cold. It seems this room is cold and wet. The wall is a little dirty. I find that the men who are playing cards wear very nice clothes but the man who is standing behind them wear poor clothes. Maybe he wants to play too, but he already lost all the money and became very poor.
ReplyDeleteThree important players are settled in the middle. Without the forth people, the painting would be a sort of empty at the top. So Paul Cezanne added another person behind them. Meanwhile, the person who is looking at the game shows us how interesting the game is. It is much more vivid than using language to describe.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, the brown curtain makes this painting more colorful by adding another color in it.
In order to stress those people, Paul Cezanne used gray as basic color. So when we are appreciate this painting, we won't concentrated on the wall or some places else. We can definitely find out what is the most important part.
Anyway, this is a really pretty. I love this style rather than abstract style. But in fact, I prefer bright color than those color.
Personally, I think the artist did a good job at dealing with the details. The three seated man are all looking at the cards they have in hands. They are so concentrated on their cards. And the man who is standing is kind of bored so that he is having a pipe. And maybe there is another person who went to the bathroom since there is pipe and cards on the table.

I feel the men is not happly.
I like this picture's colour.
I think this picture about history.
I can tell that is a good painting even though i am not an artist. The picture is more like a question for me: where did the fourth people go? This is also the point to catch the attention from the readers. Of course Paul Cezanne did a good job on the elements of the art. Such as the shape, the value and the color. I don't think i can do such a good job on the painting ever. The last thing is that i enjoy looking at this painting and guessing the answer of the question from the picture.
ReplyDeleteI like this kind of painting, this kind always has a story to bring it to us. Make you use your imagination to think what going to happen next. Like in this painting,obviously we are missing the fourth player. Cause there is a pipe on a side. and that side is empty.So, this painting make people think where is that forth person. Lost the game ? but what kind of game is that? Is that a gamble, and what are the use to gamble? Money? or something else.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how different people notice different aspects of the same painting, and also draw different conclusions about the subject of the painting. For instance, the players seemed nervous to some of you, and you thought they were probably playing for money. But for me, the cards are just a pastime - something to do with friends while you smoke a pipe. As for the colors, they are muted, though I believe in person they would be brighter.
ReplyDeleteI like cartoon. A cartoon combines art and humor. When it is skillfully done, a simple line drawing and a few words can make people laugh. Their troubles seem less important, and they enjoy life more fully.
ReplyDeleteI don't like this picture. In my opinion i prefer cartoon or realistic art works. My favorite artist is Leonardo Davis. His art works are the most expensive and beautiful in the world. I love them because most of them are realistic art works. I was travel to France to visited the Leonardo's art works. It is so pretty and so nice. Each one is at least 5 million dollar. It is very beautiful. If u have choice to France. U need to visit his art works.

I like his work, it is really realistic. The values and the textures are great.
Through his painting, we can find the motion of these four person, which he did really good.
And he did the details good, like the hats, the coats that people wear, and the curtain.
My best parts of this painting are four people's faces. I know that it is really hard to draw a face with different emotions.
And the color is okay, I m not really like it.
I also know that he did lots of self-portraits, Still life paintings,and Water-colors paintings, which are really good.
I like this sort of art, but my favorite painter is Vincent Van Gogh.
I really wanna go to show of the card player painting, but I don't have chance. That's so poor.

Actually, I don't think it's a really good painting maybe because I'm not very good at thinking about the painting. I don't know how difficult to paint a painting like this. But When I look at this painting. I can see a real picture that 3 men are forcing on playing the cards and the fourth man are waiting for the turn. It just looks like what the people in the real life do when they are playing the cards. Maybe that's call realistic.

Paul Cezanne is an french artist that he wasn't pretty important when he was alive. he was ignore. When he died he started being more famous. he was a postimpressionist pintor. He was really important because he was like the change from on artist stile to another one. This painting is one pretty famous. Maybe his most famous painting. ih this painting wa can see three man playing poquer or something like this. one of the men that is sitting down is kind of sad or mad because he doesn't have a good hand. The other two seen concentrated trying to win all the money. behind them we can see another man that he is smoking and he is paying attention ti the players. The Artist in this artwork uses colors like blues, browns and maybe some yellow and orange. the painting is realistic but not a lot because we can perfectly know that its not a painting.

ReplyDeleteI saw that paint in real in New York and it is really good. In my opnion Paul Cezanne is a wonderfull artist.
But if I have to be honest my favorite kind of art is Renaissance.
And my favourite artist is Sandro Botticelli who lived in Florence Italy. Also he painted The Spring, in my opinion the best paint in he world.
I dont really understand this picture. but i think these guys are really boring, just spend time on the cards. I dont really play cards, maybe sometime i will play with friends. Most of free time i like to play some video games or basketball. anyway there are so many entertainments we can do. cards is one of them, but i dont really like it
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I'm not really close to the art guy. I don;t know how to draw a picture and I also don't know how to see a picture deeply. I'm so sad about this. I still remember when I was in low grade, I even couldn't draw anything, my facher helped me do my art homework.
ReplyDeleteBut I can tell something I thing I think about this picture. I think the picture is really realistic. There's only three people are playing the card game, but the game supposed to be four people. I think the painter is trying to make our think where is the forth person? Different people comes out different answers. On the other hand, where is a person standing behind a person who's in white. He can see that't person's card also he can see left one. That's very impolite I think.
This picture shows people playing card game there are 4 people in the picture 3 sitting at a table one is standing there seems have some card on the other side so there might be have another people playing the guy maybe go to the washroom in China we also have card game. In different country we have different card game I like Texas poker because it’s interest you need interllegent to play this game.
