Journal Question #14 (2010-2011)
Computers, cell phones, television, itouch, ipad, ipod... email, instant-messaging, texting, twittering, facebook, google, phone calls... The list of distractions for people in general, and students in particular, goes on and on. Do you do your HW with the laptop open and the iphone on? Do these devices distract you from your work? Is it hard to concentrate on one subject at a time? Let me know your thoughts about all the technology that surrounds us and how it affects your learning.

ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I wasn't get used to this kind of life when I came to U.S. In my Chinese high school, I could only use laptop on Saturday night. My cellphone was usually quiet in weekdays. I couldn't have any CDs and television in my room. Every night, I focused on my study.
ReplyDeleteWhen I come here, I find my laptop is always opening. My cellphone is always ringing. My music is always playing. When I research something in the internet, I often remove my attention to facebook and new movies. Chatting with friends takes me a lot of time.
Every night when I go to bed, I find during the whole night I didn't do anything. So I blame myself and angry to myself. But the same things will happen again and again.
I doubt my self-control ability. In the same time, I can do less things than before. Those technology do affects my learning.
This technology hurts my skin and sight.It kills my time and energy.
If it's possible, I wish I can control myself better and pay more attention to something meaningful things.
I always do my homework with the laptop open and my phone on and it is true that they distract me from my work sometime. But the laptop can also help me to study. I can found some information form the internet and ask some question online. So i can still finish my homework on time.
ReplyDeleteI can also play games in my laptop for relax when i finish my homework. I think most functions of these devices are very useful for us and we can save our time by using these devices. So they are not as bad as some people think. They have a positive side too. I love using my laptop when I do my homework and i think these devices are a part of my life.
I didn't pay attention to this situation. I think I usually have my phone and my laptop on when I am doing my homework. Since I don't think it will distract me a lot. And sometimes it can be hard for me to do my homework without my laptop on. Because all of my homework is in English now. With my laptop on I can always find out the words' meaning when I have no idea what that is. For me, it is always more easy to do my homework with music on.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was young I always learn things from other people or in books. Times goes by, everything changed. Now, I am more likely to learn different things on line, Which is very convenient. But it also has some weakness. Since the things were posted on line. It is hard to know who posted the information. It can even be hard to know if the information is right or not.So on the other hand, it is kind of confusing to know if the thing I just learned is right or not.

ReplyDeleteOK, so first let us think about what things develop human civilization. Iphone? Laptop? TV? They are just the container of technology. Knowledge develops human civilization. Maybe there is some knack that listen to music when reading books can improve your memory or something else but I prefer not to do that unless you can draw a cow by the left hand when you draw a duck by your right hand. I think the homework which we studied now is easy so based on "don't waste time", we do other things at the same time. I sometimes listen to music when I do homework and the quality has not changed, but the efficiency has changed so much. I believe the secret of success is concentrate on your work and do it carefully.
Actually,I always do my homework with my computer on , I really feel it has influenced me a lot. I usually can't concentrate on my work . It distract me a lot.So ,it is hard for me to finish my homework in the provided time.
ReplyDeleteI think high technology products are very useful ,but it depends on when we use them and how we use them. If we use them in the wrong time, high technology products are harmful.So I think I will not use them anymore when I am doing my homework.

ReplyDeleteFirst thing let us think about it, we can't live without technology.And that's it.People can not live without computer, cellphone or what ever. So, don't even think about it to take our cellphone away mr griffin.lol But i do agree with we only can concentrate on one thing at a time. I have try to doing two different things at same time, but in the end I did terrible on both of them. So, when you really concentrate on a thing, you just can't do another thing at that time. Just Like in the movie SAW, Main Character have to face a problem ; there is trap in front of him, and there are two people in the trap.and he has two ropes that he can pull to save one of them, and only one . If he try to pull both of the ropes, the two guys will all die. so , he has to make the decision to choose one of them and drop another one...

ReplyDeleteI always to my homework with the laptop open and my phone on. These devices kind of distract me from my work. But actually, I use the laptop for studying and researching when I doing my homework. I can find a lot of information about the lessons. Internet is really useful for learning. However, I know if I use this a lot, it's going be not good because it hard to concentrate on one work at a time. But we can deny the advantages of the technology like laptop, cellphone, ipod, ipad....I always use skype to my parents, my friends after I finish homework on 10 or 10.30 and I can't imagine if one day we don't have these technology devices.

ReplyDeleteI always use computer for my homework. I can concentrate and do my homework and when I finish I go on Facebook or something like that, but not everybody can do the same.
I think technology makes communication easier. For example I use Skype to speak with my family in Spain. It is a free service and you can speak all time that you want.
Many people prefer to use social networking rather than speak face to face.
Of course I prefer to speak face to face but in my situation I can´t speak with my family and friends in Spain face to face, so I use Skype and I love it.
Maybe new technology makes learning more difficult because it is very distracting, but I think the benefits are better than the inconvenience.
When I do my homework I always use my computer, Ipod or Iphone, not to play just to listen to music. I’m not a video game addict. I don’t even like them. Here I have none of those things. But in Spain I don’t have a lot of that either, I have the Play Station 2, the one that I don’t use at all because I find it boring. What I really do a lot is text people a lot. People could say that I’m a text addict.
ReplyDeleteI like listen music when I doing my homework. Because when I doing math problems, physics problems and chemistry problems. Because I felt when I doing some difficult problems listen to some good music can help me to be more efficient in the homework. But I don't like listen to music and do other thing beside class work when teacher is teaching. Because if I don't listen to teacher's teaching, I can't gain knowledges.

If I write a paper to the teachers, the computer will automatically to check the spelling and grammer, so computer can help me to make fewer mistakes.Also If i doing some math and science problems, I don't know the formula. But the computer can tell me what formula is I want. So in my opinion computer is a very helpful tool in the study!
When I came here, I got my new laptop and i could not control myself to use it whenever I'm doing my homework or watching TV. And I really distracted by this devices.
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm doing my homework, i will think about Facebook and youtube and I always want to know what's going on with my friends and family. One night I spent 3 hours in Facebook though I just looked at the website and had nothing to do. I was not chatting with someone or watching video. I could not force on my homework.
But something has an opposite effect from using Facebook is listening to music,especially listening to the rap. I can do my homework quickly with high quality by listening to the melody or the song though I cannot hear what the singer sings.
In my opinion, I think that technology help me a lot on my studying. For example, I can go to TA online to review the classes and use Google to get the information that I want.
Nowadays, peoples are living in materialistic, have a standard of living and qualities of life. Almost people have computer, mobile phone, digital cameras and some of technology appliances at home. Technology makes our life convenient. Thousands of years ago, people can not imagination we can make this higher technology things. Such as mobile phone, whatever where are you on the earth, can easily to find others in second. On the other hands computer is common user for the people, from youth to old, can use it to working or entertainment. It also can search useful information from online, that is like a big library almost questioned or problem can be solved. The digital cameras that are can save precious memories and happiness time for us. The airplane can bring us to any where to around the world in shorter time. We use technology medical can cure many patients are suffering from disease. Last but not least, the technology develops rapidly. This is true for make our life better. I believe in the future people can take more advantage from technology.

ReplyDeleteI put my computer away when I doing my homework, but later, I told myself:I need computer,I need check my homework, find something on the internet, and so on. Then I open my computer, because I give myself enough excues to open my computer.
I always finish to check my homework,then go to FACEBOOK.
I like to listen MUSIC on the computer,and I chat with my family on the computer,it's cheap.
Sometimes I do some online shopping,and watch some movies.
I don;t need to buy the book,I can search online.
Last years was my first year to study here. I didn't have some difficult class at all. So i spend a lot of times at computer game. probably like 5 hours a day. That spend too much time. But a also filed lonely when i finished a game. Computer can't bring my any thing.

Before I come to the USA I didn’t use the laptop everyday and didn’t have lots of time to go on line. Also, my parents didn’t allowed me to watch TV so much because I was under stress that time—the final exams for senior high school. Although I know I wouldn’t go to a senior high school in China because I was going to study in America. But I used my cell phone a lot such as chatting with my classmates or friends. Sometimes I used it for ask homework or discussed the math problems with others. Also, I used it for listening to music.
ReplyDeleteAfter I came to the USA, I have used the laptop a lot. Such as ELL journal. Of course I use it to search information for my homework. Sometimes I use it to connect with my friends in China. I cannot imagine live without a computer.
I have to say sometimes computer bother me because it makes my only want to go on line and don’t want to study. But I cannot live even study without a computer. I think it’s a big problem.
When I was in China, I did my all homework without anything that can affect me. But when I came here, I always doing my homework with computer, cell phone and itouch, although I am aware of that this will affect the quality of my homework.
ReplyDeleteI think that may because of the homework here is less and a little easier. I had to do at least six hours homework everyday in China, if I did it without any copy. But, in here, I just do about two hours homework everyday. So, I always do my homework with other things that I shouldn't have.
Also, I think it may because there is nobody look at me, sometimes I can't control myself. In China, if I did it in study hall, there would be a strict teacher in the classroom. And if I did it at home, my mom would look at me, and she always took my cell phone and ipod away when I did my homework.
"Is it hard to concentrate on one subject at a time" is a truth. But I thought if I always concentrate on one subject for a long time, I would be so tired and felt so bad. And I didn't think I need to do this right now, because I don't have that hard and that much work I need to do. So, I always give myself reasons to do my homework with computer, itouch and cell phone.
I will try to concentrate on one subject at a time, because I know that will good for me.
Actually, I do my homework with my laptop open, cellphone on, music on, facebook, chinese facebook and so on. To be honest, it is distracts me a lot. When I'm doing my homework, I always want to check if there are any messages or missing dialings. And I look at the facebook, change the music really often during my study time. They do distract me but I don't have any idea to leave these stuffs even during my study time.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was in China, I don't have my own cellphone, I don't have my laptop. So I couldn't do my homework with these stuff. I got my first cellphone when I was in ninth grade. That's pretty late. And even my little cousin in China has his own cellphone at these time, he's only a sixth grade child.

Technology changing very fast. So many company get enough money from technology for example: Apple, IBM, NOKIA and so on. Technology right now is very important for everybody. We need computer, internet, cellphone anywhere. Cellphone in China is very important for a students. Because not every school agree their students to take computer during the school time, so if you wants to contact with your mother or boyfriend you have to use cellphone and watch the NEWS too! So in China i use my cellphone online. But right now i use my computer online. I open my cellphone or laptop during i doing my homework and sometimes i am calling someone doing my homework specially i need some help. The application is very powerful right now SKYPE, QQ ,MSN ,Facebook we all use it. And we know the 3G internet is coming we will meet 4G internet soon. I know right now the T-mobile is selling the 4G internet cellphone and notebook computer. So in my mind we can not leave with out the computer and cellphone.
