Journal Question #10 (2010-2011)
In ELL 2, we have been talking about the importance of Beauty in, it seems, every culture, including American culture. This is a picture of ballerinas in Berlin, Germany - an image of beauty for many. What about you? In your opinion, what makes a person - or a place or an object - beautiful? Is beauty important to you? Do you think different cultures have different ideas of beauty?

Ancient Greek Plato said, "a beautiful mind with a consistent beautiful body" is "the most beautiful state". I think beautiful things can give people a sense of comfort, hope, affinity, shock or artistic. I also think the significance of the existence of beauty is more important than "I am handsome", and the latter is a hypocritical beauty.
ReplyDeleteI agree with different culture have different ideas of beauty. Such as the dance, we can compare the modern dance and the tribal dance. The modern has the most fashionable style. You may think the tribal dance has the strange movement, but the people dance with a sincere heart and the simple movement. I think both them are beautiful.
That is my ideas.
I think two ways can give an girl a beautiful looking. One way is when this girl born, the parent give this girl a nature good looking. Another way to get beauty is to have some special operation. South Korea have the best skill of these operation. So we can see a lot of beautiful girls in the south Korea but these girl's beauty is not nature beauty.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think beauty is a important thing in a lot of culture. Especially in the Chinese culture. In some important place like congress government always choose a lot beautiful girls to serve the representatives. If a young girl wants to find a job like flight attendant. She must be beautiful, If she is not beautiful enough no one will hire this girl.
But in my opinion, beautiful is not important for me. One reason is I'm not an girl. The another reason is my ideal job is to become an engineer. This job don't require beautiful looking. So this is not important for me.
I like this sentence in Hans comment:'a beautiful mind with a consistent beautiful body is the most beautiful state' I think a people whoever has the beautiful mind and body could be perfect. These two part are 50%50%percent in your life. But another way we can say the beautiful mind is worth than the beautiful body. i agree with it. cause the beauty of outside will always go away with the age.But the beauty of inside could make a people beautiful forever. I have seen a woman in a picture which is not really beautiful.(outside)but the picture's name is "the most beautiful woman in China" Because there is a soldier was standing on the grand during the rain, and that woman was helping him by using a umbrella to cover rain for the solider..
ReplyDeleteAnd i agree with different cultures have different ideas of beauty.Good example: in the TA, some of the girls that i think are pretty, but my friends(some us kid) don't think so..
There is an English saying, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Peter is getting at this idea in his last sentence. Do you agree? Do different people have different ideas of what is beautiful, or are there some "beauties" that everyone agrees on?
ReplyDeleteFor me, there are many different ways to make a person, a place or an object beautiful. If something is really pretty then i must feel it is beautiful at the first sight. And the feelings are very necessary as well. Something that can make i feel warm is always beautiful for me. And there is also another thing that can make a person beautiful that is the person's character. If a person is helpful, warm-hearted, nice then the person must be much beautiful than the person must be prettier than the person who is cruelhearted. For example, snow white is much prettier than her stepmother. Not only because what they look like outside but also because they way they treat others.

I am sure that different cultures have different thoughts of what beautiful is. For example, there is a nation the people there think the more rings you put on your neck the prettier you are. It is hard to imagine things like that in China or in the US.
So for sure, there must have different ideas about what can make a person beautiful.
I also agree with Hans"a beautiful mind with a consistent beautiful body" is "the most beautiful state", But sometimes you can't find such a person like this often. I think a beautiful mind and a pure heart make a person to be a beauty.If the person is a beauty or not .If he or she is a person with a beautiful mind and a pure heart ,I will be willing to make friends with him or her.
ReplyDeleteI think beauty is important, but like Anna said it is not the most important thing.I perfer making friends with a person with a pure heart and a beautiful heart.
I do think different cultures have different ideas of beauty.Actually,different people in the same culture may also have different ideas of beauty.For example,music. Personally,I like classical musics ,but some people don't.
That is my idea.
In fact, every girl wants to become beautiful and every boy wants to see beautiful girls, even though most of them don't admit it. It's a nature for all the people.
ReplyDeleteSince I was a little girl, they taught me what is true beautiful. You should let others admit your character and ability. Beautiful will gone, but something inside will last forever.
We certainly should care about beautiful, but we can't concentrate more on it too much. For all the girls, we should hold this balance. I admire some successful business women who are graceful and beautiful.
Different people have different ideas of what is beauty. I think so. For example, Chinese always think big eyes are the symbol of beautiful. On the opposite, American like chinese girl's small eyes. I can't understand it at all. But in generally, we all have our own idea about beauty.

ReplyDeleteAs Mr. Griffin said, different cultures have different ideas of beauty, on the other hand, different person also have different aethestic standard. As for me, I don't think American girls are beautiful even though most people think they are really pretty, especially Peter does. Every time I walk with him, the only theme between us is hot girls.
The beautiful is not only show upon the outside, it's also comes out with inside temperament. Even a girl or a woman don't have a beautiful face, thin body but with a high temperament, she is beautiful. In China, if a kind of girls whose only have beautiful face without great inside, these girls are called as vase. Vase won't do any thing in its whole life just stand there. The pretty girl without anything inside won't do anything in her whole life, neither.
Anyway, In my own opinion, the most beautiful girl is Sunny!!!!!!!!
I don't think that anyone want to be ugly. People may feel proud if they are beautiful.Just like Ziming said: some girls may do smoe special operation to get a better looking. Even though they know that should be painful. Of course everyone love to meet someone who's beautiful but beautiful is not always positive. Your beauty may cause some troubles. Such as the flowers may kill themselves by their beauty.

I like beautiful,but I can't over pursue for beauty.I think normal is enough.People like beautiful,because beauty can help people have good life.lots of handsome man love you,beauty is important,but beautiful spirit is important than beauty.I think different culture have different ideas, some people like dress up themselves,but some people have beautiful spirit as well as dress up.everybody have different ideas of beauty.

I don't care.Although beauty can make you life more colorful,but I think it is enough for me now.I don't need more beauty. that is very hypocritical.If I need to make me more beautiful that is too easy. just pay some money to have some special operation. but if I really do that, I'll find that it was not really me! it is too fake out.
ReplyDeleteEveryone has different idea about beauty. Beauty is something make me feel warm and comfortable in my mind. Beauty needn't be very special. it just comes from daily life and real nature. Although different culture may have different opinion about beauty,they are similar even same sometimes. we can't change the outside because our parents give it to us before we were born. also, everyone have different feeling when they see something. in this way, something beautiful or not depend on what we feel. so actually, we can not even say something is beautiful or not. it's not important cause it will go away by the age.

my chinese teacher said that the most beautiful sentences is the simplest sentences. the most beautiful person is the most simplest person. when a person has a pure heart and pure spirit, he or she is beautiful.

ReplyDeleteWe used to think that the most attrative lady must firstly have a very beautiful appearance and fine figure. But now we are thinking about this question very differently. Intelligence is becoming more important when we are talking about attracting the others' attention.

ReplyDeleteThere are many different beautiful in the would.But I still belive the beauty of mind is basic.yesterday it was,today it is,I think tomorrow it still is.
Like the women,If I feel the woman is beautiful when I fitst time to meet her,but I don't think she is a made woman.
But when I feel a woman is beauty of mind,I think she is a made woman,I will make friend with her.
Like the picture,this is culture,so only beautiful dancer,it's absolutely not enough.The dancer should show the temperament on the culture,those people can give the spectators feeling about the dance.
I think different people have different mind about who is beautiful who isn't beautiful. But finally the most beautiful person who is the one we love her. No body have perfect face which has no defect on it, but if we fall in love someone, that means we not only like her advantages, but also like her shortcomings. No meter how beautiful the others are, the most beautiful person is who we most love.

ReplyDeleteI feel everyone have some different ideas for the beauty. But in my opinion what is beautiful? In this world no one can answer this question, the beautiful is the good looking? The sexy? No i think we don't have a measurement criteria for who is beauty or who is ugly. Just because if you have a good looking sometimes you don't know that. You always heard from other people, so you are beautiful or not beautiful the definition is from others. We always heard some of the girl said :"Oh that boy is so handsome!" But if we put this boy in different culture maybe the girls in different place they don't he is handsome. So what is handsome or beautiful we don't have a same definition in different culture. In my mind the definition in different culture only from most of people in at culture they opinions. And we know everyone have a different value. So in this world no one is most beautiful and no one is very ugly. In this world the most beautiful thing is the love, because the lovers they thinks each other are most handsome or beautiful person in the world. Just because love we have a definition, but is still not same.

ReplyDeleteEveryone's aesthetic standards are different. So I do not think there is a exact beautiful for either a person, a place or an object.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, a person's temperament can determine he or she is beautiful or not, and the spirit, the intelligence, the faith also can determine it; a place's comfort can determine there is beautiful or not; and an object's outward appearance can determine it is beautiful or not. But I am sure different people always have different opinions.
And also, different cultures have different ideas of beauty.
So, I do not think we need to make ourselves have a beautiful appearance sedulously, although I think that is important for us. Looks beautiful is good, but we also can use different ways to show our beauties.

Beauty is a good thing. Beauty in mind, beauty in appearance or activity. A person can have beautiful appearance but we're not sure that she has beautiful mind. In my opinion, Beauty is very important. I think everyone want to be beautiful and how to be like that is not easy.I think every one have different opinions about beauty and for me, I think who has beautiful mind is the most beautiful.

ReplyDeleteFor example in some countries in Africa people think that women are beautiful if they have long necks. They put many rings around their necks during their lives to make it longer, they call them giraffe women. This is one example that not everybody has the same idea of beauty.
Also I think that beauty is important because maybe you can give a better impression to others and maybe you can make more friends. But for me the real beauty is inside and outside.
A real beautiful person is someone who is beautiful on the inside and outside. This is real beauty.
I think beauty is important to me. Beauty can include external and inner beauty. Sometime external beauty is important because people will be attracted at the first time by the appearance of others. But in my opinion, inner beauty is more important than the external one.Inner beauty shows how the people really is. I like to make friend with the one who is nice, honest, loyal and gental then the one who is mean.
ReplyDeleteI think different cultures have different ideas of external beauty but have same thoughts of inner beauty.In some cultures, people think the fatter the women are, the more beautiful will they become. But in most cultures, people like fit women much. However, no matter in China or in America, people like the kind one than the mean one. And that's the same in all over the world.
The German ballerinas look really nice and pretty. They look so beautiful because of all the dresses that they are wearing and all of their performances. To me being beautiful is important, even though it is not most important thing ever but it’s something important because it’s the first thing that you see in a person, his appearance. In my opinion a person is beautiful when he is pretty and nice. When I say nice I mean being a good and smart person because someone can be really beautiful but if he is annoying I’m not going to like him at all. On other hand we have the concept of the beautiful. This concept is different for every person culture because or culture conditions us.
