Journal Question #16
Are you a different person when you speak English? Language is a big part of who you are, so I wonder if speaking English has changed your identity at all. Another way to look at it: when you return to your home this summer and speak your first language, will you become your "native-language" self?

When I first started to speak English, I spoke very kindly and my voice was louder than usual, but now I am very comfortable with English, so I speak Korean as usual. I don't think I changed my identity not much. I think that thing just make me more tired and sensitive. It was kind of hard to foucus on saying English properly.
ReplyDeleteIna:
ReplyDeleteI’m gonna be able to express myself more, like in the school, because it’s harder for me to express everything that I want to say in another language, maybe I know some words and I’m improving but my expressions in Spanish are always going to be different and I feel like I can say more words or invent some words with my friends and it will be like “our” expression.
Terry:
ReplyDeleteNo, I am not a different person when I speak English. I always have my own thought in my brain and say it using English, so whether I am using my native-language or English doesn’t matter. So speaking English won’t change my identity at all. When I return to y home this summer and speak my first language, I won’t change my personality or the way I am speaking, because it’s hard to change the personality and the language is not the wall that separate myself.
Mic:
ReplyDeleteFor me, language has been a big struggle in my life. I always have a hard time trying to express what I want to say but it doesn’t stop me. I love to joke around and talk to people despite the language barrier that I have. English does affect my confidence but it doesn’t stop my willingness to speak it out. Given that I want to speak good English, I’m fine with struggling because it takes time and dedication to perfect it.
Philip:
ReplyDeleteWhen I speak English, I am still myself. Speaking different languages doesn't change anything for me. I think language is just a way to express yourself faithfully. I use words to say everything that follows my heart, that's all. When I return to China to speak Chinese, I will not be any different from now.
Enrique:
ReplyDeleteI think that I am not the same person when I am speaking in English to,the person I am when I start to talk in Spanish. Since my first language is Spanish I believe I am funnier or I have more humor when I speak in Spanish than when I am speaking in English.
Harry:
ReplyDeleteWhen I speak English, I will be another person, and when I speak English, I will consider whether I should say this sentence or how to say this sentence, which will cause me to speak English is not special Self-confidence, in other words, my spoken language is not so mature, and I don't know many English vocabulary, so I can only speak in my limited English vocabulary. If I switched to Chinese, I would not have such concerns, because I am a native Chinese speaker, and I have spoken Chinese since birth. I am very confident when speaking Chinese. Of course, when I return to China, I will also speak Chinese. When I usually call my mother in the United States, I still speak in Chinese and I will be a native speaker.
Mingyang:
ReplyDeleteStudying in the United States to learn English will not have a negative impact on mother tongue learning, the two languages will not interfere with each other. The two are not mutually contradictory, but mutually reinforcing. I can still speak my mother tongue fluently when I return to China this year. He can communicate with his family normally
Andrea:
ReplyDeleteI think I am the same one speaking English or Spanish. To be honest this year I didn’t practice my English that much, because all my friends are Mexicans so I always speak Spanish. But when I speak English I am the same one, just that I don’t talk that much I don’t know perfectly how to express my self so that could influence a little.
Some people when they change to another language they change their way of speaking, personality or many other things. I think that when you grow up in a country speaking the native language of that country automatically you develop yourself in that language because of the environment you grew up in. In my case, when I speak English and when I speak Spanish I try not to make a big difference in my personality or the way of speaking. Some I can notice some difference as being funnier in my language than in English or answering faster in Spanish than in English. I also noticed that when I went back home for vacation some things that I was used to because of the English language changed when I needed to speak Spanish and in a short period of time I became again my “native-language” self.
ReplyDeleteAlegria:
ReplyDeleteI think I am a different person because speaking Spanish I have many more expressions to use and I can develop more when I speak. Also speaking I am more fluent and I don't have to be thinking while I speak, and I know all the words.
I don't think my self doesn't change, only my way of expressing myself and the jokes I can make to my friends who speak the same language as me are more spontaneous than to my friends with whom I speak English.
Jerry:
ReplyDeleteI think I’m the same person, but a little different.because when I speak English I need to think and not speak like my mother language,I need to think first and then speak it .it’s take times and I don’t know much words like my mother language ,but I’m not change my mind, I still talk what I think,my English skill has much better than i first come the TA.i feels good about it.
Anni:
ReplyDeleteEven though my English is not bad, I remember how to speak my native-languag when I go back to China. Most of my friends in China can speak English and some of them also speak Cantonese. I can speak Cantonese, Chinese and English. Sometimes when I speak Chinese I forget how to say a word. I will say Cantonese or English, because some words I forget how to pronounce in Chinese and I will say it in English or Cantonese. So does my sister, but my family understands what I’m trying to tell.
Damir:
ReplyDeleteWhen I get back to my country I think I will be the same person as I am right now.
People say that I never changed since I was a kid, but I will definitely feel a lot happier and be more comfortable because I know most of the people in my hometown. I don’t think that language can change how I act, how I speak or do things. Maybe the environment but that is unlikely to happen, and that is one of the things that I like about myself that I don’t change because I like the way I am right now. All tho I am actually a little bit funnier in English, but I do think that since I’m here in the USA I think a lot better and more than I was in Croatia so I don’t know if that has to do anything with speaking English but sometimes I do think in English.
Roy:
ReplyDeleteI think I am a different person when I speak English. It’s because I have spoken my native language before coming to the United States.
So I'm more used to speaking Korean than English. When I speak English, there are words that can be explained by Korean but cannot be explained by English.
My identity changes when I speak English because I’m not used to speaking English yet.
I think when I return to my home this year and speak my first language, I will become my native language self.
Hoya:
ReplyDeleteLanguage is the most important thing for people, Because if we don’t have languages, we can’t explain our opinion and can’t make culture either. In this world, the first language for people is English. But more people use chinese because china has almost 13 billion people who use chinese. And I’m from South Korea so I use the Korean language. Now I’m in united states, I usually use English to speak with other.country people, but when I speak with Korean people, I use my own language because it’s more comfortable. But I also try to speak English as well to practice the reason why if I can’t speak English well, I can’t talk with people from United states or any other country.
Jay:
ReplyDeleteI think I am being a different person when I speak English. When I speak English, I cannot describe what I want to say more specifically, so I think it’s hard to express myself truly. And also, when i speak Korean, i speak many slang words when i’m speaking with my friends. But, here, I don’t really know America’s trends and slang words, so I think it’s very normal to become a different person when people are speaking their own language. And also, I think, When you speak your native language, you really know the details, so it is easy to find the differences between those similar words. but when you speak foreign language it’s really hard to find a word’s differentiation that has similar meanings.

ReplyDeleteI think I’m the same person when I talk in English obviously I can express my self better in my own language than in English but that’s why I’m here to Practice it more. I think it didn’t changed my identity at all I talk at the same way in English with my friends as I would i my own language. I think no I’m not going to be with my native language all the time because English is part of my life but I will definitely talk more in my native language that I did it here before.
Jimmy:
ReplyDeleteWhen I speak English, I think I will be a different person because the grammar of Chinese is completely different from the grammar of English, and when you are new to English, you wonder if you can speak English in the wrong order. I think it is important for me to learn a language because I can learn more about the culture and meet more people. I when I go back to my country and speak my native language, I think it will be exactly the same as before

Some people think that they might be changed when they speak another language due to the way of speaking or the words they chose to speak. I agree that our way of speaking might be changed when we use our second language, but I think it cannot change me 100% as another person because my personality still exists and it would appear from my speaking. Even if your words or something changed, it is still you.
Grayson:
ReplyDeleteSpeaking another language than English doesn't change my overall personality, but everyone speaks differently depending on who you're speaking to. So since I only use Korean when I talk to my parents. I guess I could say that changes my personality. I really don't have many chances to speak Korean. So it's getting worse every second. Which is very ironic. I am slowly forgetting my own language.
Amelia:
ReplyDeleteYes, I think that I change to a different person when I speak English. When I speak English, sometimes I do not know the word in English. So, I have a difficult time understanding words or thinking about the words. Also, I over act and have big reactions. If Koreans have a talk, we react while the person is speaking, but not really as much as Americans. Therefore, I think I try to react well while people are talking when I use English.
Nick:
ReplyDeletePersonally I never thought about the fact that I might be a different person when I speak English ,but this is totally true. I personally feel way less confident in both making friends and having a serious talk with a teacher. In Poland it was just way easier for me to communicate, and I didn’t even realize that that changed my personality. A good example is that I became a bit less outgoing than before and less funny, because in Poland I always make good jokes and I am always the one that makes everyone happy, unfortunately here I feel less confident with a language and I cannot do that anymore.
Diego:
ReplyDeleteI do believe that when you speak another language that is not your first language you are another person because at least in my case I cannot express myself 100 percent, for example when I speak English my personality is calmer and it seems that not I like to talk with people but when I speak Spanish I am more fun and I like to socialize a lot, but I also think that once you master English at 80 percent you can be yourself and you can express yourself however you want
Luciana:
ReplyDeleteAt first when I came here and start speaking English I was more kind like talking sweet and my voice was not laude as it was. Because I was trying to try to speak well I also spoke in a low velocity to realize all the words that I was telling.
Now I’m the same person when I speak English. For me now I’m my self and I’m more use to speak it so it becomes part of my life so when I return to my home I will be the same native speaker as I was.
Peter:
ReplyDeleteI feel like I'm considered different when I use English because I often can't express myself accurately. And it's easier to show my respect to people in English than in Chinese. And when I speak English I change my behavior, attitude, and values to adapt to the American language culture. If I go home in the summer, Chinese is still my first language, but there are some English words mixed in
Edward:
ReplyDeleteBecause English is my second language and is widely used over the world, I believe I could speak it fluently. When I speak English, I believe I transform into a different person because if I can't think of a word in my own tongue, I can think of a synonym in English and translate it back to Vietnamese. English has grown ingrained in my speech, and many Vietnamese people now speak it, so I won't have to worry about it when I return to my homeland this summer.
