Are you a different person when you speak English? Language is a big part of your identity, of who you are, so I wonder if speaking English has changed your identity at all. Another way to look at it: when you return to your home this summer and speak your first language, will you also become your "old" self?

Actually, not,to me,language is just a way to express myself,As for whether the identity changes or not, I think people will change in several different identities every week. For example, when I'm a student,I will try my best to learn, when I go back to my dorm,I will relax myself, when I go back to my home,I'm a son of my mom, just like that,People always play the role that suits them best at the right time. That is what I think.
ReplyDeleteStudying new language is quiet a challenge in my perspective . Using new language makes me nervous. I stutter while speaking and that makes me wanna work harder. Thus,I think people have their own ways of handling. Some might able maintain their’s identities while studying. But for me, it did change my identity.
ReplyDeleteYes I will be an old David my self when I speak my first language Korean. I think so the language changes person’s identity in my opinion. When I talk with Americans or who are using English, I feel i can do more than what I could do when I speak Korean. Which gives me brave. Speaking Korean makes me speak more carefully but of course it is comfortable for me a lot. So language gives me variety identity my self.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I’m different person when I’m speaking English. Actually I’m different when I speak with people that doesn’t speak my language. I think I’m more brave when I’m speaking Serbian and I can say more when I’m speaking my language, but also I think I would becoming better and better at English and I guess I’ll be same person at the both languages one day.
ReplyDeleteI feel like speaking English is important in my life, because it is the language that everyone uses to talk with people from around the world, I mean I don't think that when I go back to Mexico I automatically became my old self Because my lifestyle is different and I'm living more experiences but of course it is easier for me to communicate with people who speak Spanish because when I speak Spanish I speak more than when I speak English
ReplyDeleteWhen I speak Korean, I am not that quiet person. However, English is not my native language, so I cannot speak English as well as Korean. Therefore, when I talk with friends who come from other countries, I become quieter than when I talk with Korean friends. Before I think about my English skill, I was really quiet when I stay with foreign friends, but now I keep trying to speak and utilize the word that I am not using. The reason why is my English skill will be improved, if I speak English as much as I can.

DeleteWhen I'm speak English, I don't feel changes in my identify so when I come back to home at summer it will just the same as when I speak English but how I speak will different. And for me, language doesn't change someone's identify it just change how someone talk.

DeleteWhen I write Korean, my way of speaking changes completely. It's getting a little talkative. And since I haven't studied abroad for a long time, I am more confident and comfortable in using Korean than using English. When I use English, my tone changes very smoothly and I speak very nicely. Instead, I don't talk much when I talk to people. I don't talk if people don't talk to me. So, for me language doesn't change my identify .
ReplyDelete*when I speak
DeleteIf I speak English while writing Korean, I can't speak like a local because I'm not good at English yet. And I don't speak because I'm not that confident, but I'm practicing speaking English these days. If you come to study abroad and use Korean, there is no point in studying abroad because your English does not improve.
ReplyDeleteSo I feel that my English is getting better little by little these days. But so far, Korean is more comfortable than English. But if I speak more English, I will be able to speak English as if I were speaking. But English does not change my identity.

I’m still myself wherever I am or any language I speak. However, my way of speaking English may make me a little different, because I can’t speak it as fluently as my mother language. My way of expressing may change because of my vocabulary, accent, pronunciation. But I actually don’t mean to do that. If my English is as good as an English speaker, I will definitely a same person.
ReplyDeleteI feel that speaking in English makes me more insecure and less sure if what I am saying is right. In Spanish that doesn’t happen to me as it is my first language. Hopefully one day I feel much comfortable speaking English.
ReplyDeleteNot at all. When Im speaking Korean, Im considered as sensitive person to the others. It is true that I am not that good at speaking Enlgish, so its little hard to communicate with others. However, my speaking style never change. -cha-
ReplyDeletefrom Pablo:
ReplyDeleteI don’t know how is people feeling or acting about that, so I’m going to talk about my own perspective, I’m a complete different person when I speak in English because I don’t know how to express my self or say the things that I want to, so sometimes I prefer to stay quiet and that’s it, it’s a shame but I’m learning.
I don’t know if there is difference when I speak Japanese and when I speak English. But I’m sure that I have something that I want to tell but sometimes I can’t do that because I don’t completely master English. I think almost same when I speak English and Japanese. Probably when I speak Japanese, I’m more talkative than when I speak English. However, I want to master English in three years as I speak Japanese.
ReplyDeleteFor me I feel like I’m a totally different person wow I I am speaking English and Chinese in physical way Rather than mental way what I mean is I sounds differently in English and Chinese by the rhythm of speaking and the volume of my voice. On The other hand I speak differently but I sync with only one brain.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think that when I speak English, I will become another person. When I speak English or Chinese, my voice, intonation and rhythm will be different, but the way of thinking is the same. Whether I speak English or Chinese, this is my identity. Part, so no matter where I am and what language I speak, I am myself.
ReplyDeleteWhen I speak English, I don't change like that
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, maybe people can perceive some. I change but that is simply because I do not speak as much and I do not express myself as much as in Spanish but I still try, I believe that people do not change because of the language, only the way of expressing themselves changes.

ReplyDeleteIndeed, when I returned to China, I became an old Henry again, because I was about to start speaking Chinese, which added another skill to my character. The difference is that when I speak English and communicate with Americans, I dare to speak and express my own ideas, but I am not so fluent when speaking, but I can speak quickly when speaking Chinese. , And very fluent, that is, two different roles!
