Journal Question #7

The winter solstice comes this year on December 21st.  It is the shortest day of the year; after the solstice, there is a little more sunlight every day, up until June 21st.  Since ancient times. humans have celebrated the return of light to the earth - the picture above is of Stonehenge, in England, which was built as a kind of solar calendar by ancient people in England.  How about you: will you celebrate the solstice?  Do you hate the increasing darkness of the days this time of year?  Are you a sun worshipper?

  1. When the summer solstice, I will celebrate together with my friends, because the summer solstice is the end of a season and the beginning of a season, which makes people happy. It will not make us feel that it will be more and more dark. Each season has the benefits of each season, so I like it very much

  2. I don’t celebrate any solstice, but if I would I wouldn’t celebrate winter solstice. Even though I like winter, because of Christmas. I wouldn’t celebrate it because I don’t like having more darkness and less hours of sun. The sun is a very important “ingredient” for my mood and how I feel. When I have more sun I feel better with more energy and more enthusiasm.

  3. Honestly this is my first time hearing about the solstice.I have never celebrated once or witnessed myself. Personally, I don't understand why they must celebrate for such a thing. Perhaps the lack of knowledge for events, background, and people's beliefs. I like the increasing darkness of the days.I feels more comfortable and warm with the darkness. I find it unsettling ,waking up early with a bright ray shooting through my eyes. Despite my personality, no, I’m not a sun worshipper.

  4. I do not think this day is bad, the truth is that it does not make me sad, on the contrary, it pleases me, apart from the fact that it seems to me a very interesting phenomenon, the night seems to me something relaxing and beautiful.

Here in China we will celebrate the winter solstice. We will make dumplings at home, because there is an old Chinese saying that eating dumplings can protect you from freezing. , So we will eat dumplings to celebrate the winter solstice. I will not hate darker days because I don’t think I like bright days too much. I am not a sun worshiper.

Vietnam located near Equator so the different of night time almost no difference between summer and winter. We don't celebrate solstice like the other country. When I'm at Vietnam the sun raise at 5:45 and set at 18:15 at summer and raise at 6:15 and set at 17:45 at winter, I really don't mind of increase of night time. But when I'm at USA, I'm feel unusual at November, I see the sky though it was 19:00 actually it was 16:30. I'm not wordship to any god like Sun.

  8. First, I’m a sun worshipper. So I hate increasing darkness. If it’s increasing darkness of the day, I can’t play outside sports for a long time. Also, I think the sun gives me energy. That’s why I hate increasing darkness. But it’s different each people that what people feel about darkness. That’s a interesting point of human. So I think it’s good to celebrate the solstice. I think it’s a difference between our culture and other cultures. I think talking bad things about other cultures is not good. So we have to keep it in mind.

  14. I will celebrate the winter solstice. To be precise, Northeast China will celebrate the winter solstice. It reminds us of places to store food and thicken clothes. Although I don't know why the winter solstice is celebrated, I will do it even though it is because of dumplings. I don’t hate the daytime and I’m not a sun admirer, but I like winter nights, especially in my hometown winter nights. I don’t know why there is always a unique charm that attracts me in my hometown winter nights.
