Are you a different person when you speak English? As you reach the end of the year, think about some of the changes that you have had since last August. Language is a big part of your identity, of who you are, so I wonder if speaking English has changed your identity at all. Another way to look at it: when you return to your home this summer and speak your first language, will you also become your "old" self?

- I have been a language teacher (ESL/ELL, French) for 30 years. I have taught in public and private schools, immersion programs, refugee programs, adult/continuing education, elementary, middle, and high school as well as university. Currently I teach ELL at a high school somewhere in New England.
When I speak English I’m the same person as when I speak my native lenguage but probably I’m not explain myself in the same way, This is my first year speaking English and I can express myself well but not the same as if I did it in Spanish with the passage of time and when I have learned more English I will surely be able to express myself in the same way in both languages.
ReplyDeleteFor me speaking English is a very important resource, it is one of the main bases for business, for me speaking English has not made a change, I am always the same person when speaking my main language and English, I am the same person with the same feelings and the same values, the only change that I have obtained in speaking English has been that I have learned much more English in what I have been here in school, that is from August to the date of now my English has been increasing That's the only change I've had, as a person I'm the same. When I return home this summer I will always have in my mind that when I say something in my main language I will think twice and think about my language and in English that is a great reward for having studied English, I will be the same person but with more mental development.

ReplyDeleteWhen I speak English, it is different when I speak Chinese. Because Chinese is very different from English, it is more difficult for me to learn English, and my English is still in progress. Sometimes I can't express my meaning completely, sometimes it will be unclear. . When I returned to China, I still learned English in English.

ReplyDeleteI think I’m the same person, but a little different.because when I speak English I need to think and not speak like my mother language,I need to think first and then speak it .it’s take times and I don’t know much words like my mother language ,but I’m not change my mind, I still talk what I think,my English skill has much better than i first come the TA.i feels good about it.
All the time when you’re learning another language,you’re learning other way to explain yourself to the world and that’s why I think when I’m speaking English I’m a different person than I am when I speak my native language so I’ll never be the same talking in English.
ReplyDeleteI think English is very important to everyone, because it is a common language. My English is much better than just coming to TA. Although I usually use my mother language with my country's friends, I will try to speak more English. In life, there will be a big improvement in my English. When I return to my home, I will still be like the “old” myself.
ReplyDeleteI think When I speak English I am a same person.Speak English can’t change my identity.If I come back in China,I also can become my old self.I think if I keep talking English, one day I want to speak Chinese. My thinking logic needs to be inverted.
ReplyDeleteI think that when I speak English, it is different from speaking Chinese. Learning English is hard for me because Chinese and English are very different. But when I came to the United States, my spoken language improved a lot. I believe that when I Master English in the future, when I speak English it will be the same as when I speak Chinese.
ReplyDeleteWhen I speak English, I’m such as the difference person as when I speak my Vietnamese language. I’m more shy and not self confident much. I’m not good at English much but I tried my best to improve it day by day because I know English is very important with life nowaday. In my opinion, I think my native language is as important as English because my parents don’t know English. Therefore, Vietnamese is only language I can communicate with them.

ReplyDeleteWhen I speak English, I feel like a foreigner. Because English and Chinese are very different. Although our contact with English is very long, studying English in China is for the exam. After going abroad, we started to practice speaking and improve our English. My English is still in the process of learning, sometimes I still can't express what I mean. But my English is much better than the first year.
ReplyDeleteSpeak English will change me. I can get different culture when I speak English with someone.It’s make me more learned.Know more culture can make my eloquence more abundant,in any language.When I go back home speak my first language,I will not be “old” self.
ReplyDeleteSince I came to AT my English became better, I learned many new words in Ell2. I have also changed a lot from being unable to communicate with foreigners in the past to no communication problems now. My second language has made me grow up a lot. I can communicate with more people and learn more new things. When I went back to China and started communicating in Chinese again, I was just so proud that I could speak two different languages
ReplyDeleteI think I still being the same person but maybe when I speak my language I could be a little different because English is a language that could some words similar to Spanish but it have a lot of different expressions and the way to talk is different, that’s one of the struggles that I got when I was learning inglish.
