- I have been a language teacher (ESL/ELL, French) for 30 years. I have taught in public and private schools, immersion programs, refugee programs, adult/continuing education, elementary, middle, and high school as well as university. Currently I teach ELL at a high school somewhere in New England.
If l disturbed by the external environment and you are unable to concentrate, say to yourself: go with it and try to be free of interference from the environment. Do not expect it to change. Let it be. Take a deep breath and let the irritable emotions exhale as you exhale. Then say it again: let you divert your attention back to it

ReplyDeleteI never become distracted on the class, but sometimes I might become unfocused and just skip teacher’s words. This usually happens when I have too much of homework for one day, and I’m doing all of it at one night. So on the next day, I become sleepy, and it’s hard to be focused. The only way I can stay focused is to close my eyes for 3 second and then harshly open them, that usually helps. But in hard cases i’m asking teacher to go and splash some sold water my face.

ReplyDeleteIf everyone is not paying attention, besides me.I will try my best to not paying attention just like them.If you really want to learn a subject very hard, Even if everyone is speaking, you still will not be disturbed. Because you really want to learn this course.And I will tell my classmates we need to focus on the class, this is our responsibility.And if you are talk, you're disrespect to your teacher.And you are also distracted the rest of the students.It's a annoying action.Sometimes I will talk to my friend in the class, I know I need to stop it.
ReplyDeleteIf you want paying attention in the class, you need to get good sleep in the last night, don't talk with students just paying attention to the teacher and take out anything you need.

ReplyDeleteI think that is not that difficult to pay attention in class, but sometimes when I don’t know why I don’t put attention. I put more attention to the classes that I’m really interest. To put attention in a class you have to leave your electronic devices in the desk and stop looking at it, and you have to watch to the teacher to understand what he is explaining. Sometimes is difficult to put attention because you are thinking in a lot of things, like what are you gonna do after school or tomorrow or in the weekend. But it have good grades you have to pay 10% of attention to your teacher.
I think is not difficult to pay attention,but sometimes you are close to a friend or you are having a problem outside the class and you just can't take it out of your mind. So my recommendation is to not use your phone or try to not sit with your friends in class.
ReplyDeleteI think that pay attention to a subject is not difficult, just should follow the teacher, look the teacher all the time , and don't use phone and computer. But I think if one student interest in the subject , he must be pay attention to the classes. And answering the question positively is also can improve study efficiency.
ReplyDeleteI don’t have tips to pay attention. And tips is useless on my way. I just can't force on one thing for a long time! I watched an video before. It talked about the people who can’t pay attention for one things. They called “multipotentialite”. Which means people who have multiple abilities. I think can’t pay attention is not a bad thing. I think I am a super creative guy. I can think things in thousands different ways. Even people can't understand what I am thinking. That’s maybe why I can do success on Art.

When I am doing homework, i will always turn my iPhone in silence mode, so that I will not disturb by my friends and bells. And also, during my sturdy time, i don’t want any other people to come in my room and talk to me, because i cannot focus the things that i am doing at that time. The tips that i want to share is, we can take a short break while we studying. In that period of time, we can reply to our friends on the phone, drink some water and relax for a few minutes. So that, we can focus on homework again.

If you do something that you really want to do, you naturally increase your concentration. However, if you encounter more annoying things or boring things, such as some interest classes, you may choose not to go to the class you are tired of, and then go to the class of your choice to study. Or you have to learn things, such as math class, the calculation of the problem is very difficult, if you are not careful, you will be wrong so that you will make mistakes the next question. At this moment you should concentrate on it. If anyone is talking next to you, you do not mind them. Because they play with them regardless of you, you should concentrate on listening to them.
ReplyDeletePaying attention is not that hard. Some people think is hard to pay attention, but I believe that people haven't found the way for them to pay attention. Therefore causes them feel hard to pay attention. The easiest way to pay attention is to block everything that will interrupt us. Such as we can put our headphone on to block other noise that can help us to concentrate. And another easiest way to concentrate is to do the things that you truly love. When people doing the things that they truly loved, they will ignore the distractions around them.

ReplyDeleteTo constentrate in class I try to put my devices away and try to dream and imagen all the teacher is saying in my mind so I can remember it later, but there are a lot of people that can not constetrate not because they don’t want, because they have some diseases.
I think pay attention is really, but you should have a good self control, if you self control stronger, you may have a good grade, you should know what you can do or not, if some one talk to you on the class, just don’t care them.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, it is hard for student pay attention in class. There are many reasons for students can not focus in the class. It included the classroom environment, classmate, social media and quality of sleep from last night. In my opinion, I think the quality of the class is the most important reason for student pay attention in class. For example, if a teacher is always taking by himself or haveing a boring speech. How can students pay a good attention in the class in that situation? In another hand, student can not only blame to the teacher. It is also a necessary thing for student focus harder by themselves in class.
ReplyDeleteTo my opinion, paying attention to the teacher or not depends on whether do I like the class that I'm taking or not. If I'm really interested in an Spanish class, I would study and concentrate on every minutes that the teacher talks. However, if I find a class boring, I wouldn't pay as much attention as the amount of interest I have on the class that I like. Another factor is the teacher's attitude of teaching, if he/she is giving an interesting lesson, it would attract my attention but, if it happens the other way, I wouldn't pay any attention.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, paying attention is dependent in is the people interested in or not. However, the ways to makes students paying attention is to let them interested into the class. In my mind, phone and other electric things are not the main reason to make student not pay attention, the reason why student use phone and iPad in the class is they think the class is boring and they don’t want use theirs time into boring things. If teachers can make the classes more interesting, many students looks will pay attention in the class.
ReplyDeleteMy tip for paying attention is to learn things a little bit harder than you always learn. In that situation, when teacher is teaching something you cannot directly no the answer or something you need to think about. Thinking is an important part of concentration. If you are thinking, you must pay more attention on the subject you are thinking about. So that, my advice for paying attention is to learn something more different and try to think about it and figure it out. This tip might be helpful for you, at least it helps me to concentrate.
ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt that focusing on one thing is not easy, especially in a bad environment. I must to say interest is the only way to solve this question. This is why people can pay attention to the video game well. So the first way to get focusing is let you love the course. But sometime you have to focused on something, take deep breaths is the best way for me. However I think for everybody get a good sleep every night is really helpful to paying attention to the class.
ReplyDeleteThe key concept of focus on things is doing one thing at a time even if it is just thinking. Unlike computer CPU, our brains is not multitask(as far as I know). The best way to focus on the class is to thinking with the teacher, so that you brain will not think something else. Don't think what will we have on lunch during a lecture. Instead trying to organize the information that you get from the teacher, and it will help you better understanding the things that you are learning.
ReplyDeleteIt’s true that paying attention is a hard thing. We will face on many distractions like games, messages, friends. I will be attracted sometime. However, my little tip is ‘get away from them as far as you can’. For examples, when I was studying or trying to pay attention, I won’t put my phone on the desk; I will try to find a place that is quite and no one will disturb me. Another good tip for paying attention is taking note. Taking note is easier for me than understanding something, and it keeps my attention on one thing.

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I think we should control ourselves and not let ourselves be distracted. I am easily attracted to my mobile phone, so when the class start, I will put my cell phone in my bookbag. Another important to know is when the teacher teaching us some thing , we shouldn’t talk with people that setting next to you. And from the beginning of the class, we have to follow the teacher's guidance, so that is not easy to be distracted.
There are always many difficulties when studying, and we have to find ways to overcome them.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, the most important point is that you like this subject.Then, you can first develop a learning goal, to find a class of students to help each other to complete.When you in different,just think about you goal and you can overcome them.
My tip for giving advice to pay attention is try to be yourself. Which is mean you can’t imitate other people doing. You should have a your own dream. If you want to learn this subject, you must try your best to do it. If you dream to be successful you had better control yourself. The problems lead you to decrease is you always imitate other bad student doing. So my advice is be yourself and control yourself.
ReplyDeleteFor myself, I think pay attention in class is one the student basic responsibilities, especially in the time teacher is teaching, also if a student care about his/her GPA, he./she will force himself to focus on class, so I don`t think there is any obvious ways for student to pay more attention in class, but remember the importance of focus on class, and one day you will do that.

ReplyDeleteActually, pay attention is the problem that most of students have. The teenagers always have a lot of energy to do something they think more interesting, like watching tv, play video game, those activated that no need to use brain a lot. To be honest, I can’t always pay attention to what I really should do, too. My favorite entertainment is animation and I can watch that all day. But if I know clearly that I need do the work, then I will play some pure music and creative my own silence area, use music to avoid the noise is a really big help for me. But something if we choose the wrong song like rock n roll, which will make us more impatient, and that is no help at all.

ReplyDeleteToday after school I went to amatoes after i returned to the dorm.after 3:30 I was in Starbucks after I returned to the dorm at 5:30 i went to dinner after I went to my dorm and to do homework and I was thinking that the school in USA is very different from my country but I still kept trying and when I finished doing homework I went to sleep.

ReplyDeleteI am the person who can not focus on works I should do easily, especially homework whenever my phone is near by. For example, when I'm studying English and there are some words I don't know, I will use the dictionary on my phone and I will neglect my studies from social media. So to keep myself focus, I will put my phone far away from me and turn off the notifications sound.
I mean honestly this problem is a pseudo proposition. If the student is not interested in the class at all. There is no way to make him be concentrated for the class and pay attention to his teacher. In other words. You will never lose attention to your favorite class even though you are super tired and there is a lot of interferences there. Literally I just can not answer this question. But the most ideal solution in my mind is make the class more interesting for every student. It is hard though, however it effective.
ReplyDeleteI think it’s not difficult to pay attention in class. I think students always pay attention in which they are interested in. So, how can I pay attention, first I need to enjoy my class, and find something interesting in that subject. If I pay attention, I will learn all the knowledge that teacher gives me, and do well in homework, also get great grades. All those things make students happy, so why not pay attention. Secondly, a good rest also helps me to pay attention.

ReplyDeleteWhen we are really interested in something, we feel it's easy to pay attention to this thing. For example, we usually feel that the time passes too fast and we can easily focus on what we are doing when we play computer games or watch TV. Learning is the same thing. If we want to pay attention on learning, we need to find pleasure from learning. But sometimes we can not find any pleasure in some subjects that we don't like. The best way is to try to pay attention to the class and force us to concentrate. If we do in this way for a long time, it will become our habits.
ReplyDeleteI think being a student should be serious in class, but it will inevitably be distracted. This will miss some of the key knowledge thus affecting learning. For such a situation, I think we should recognize the mistakes ideologically, to help change their usefulness. And often distractions result from the distractions of other classmates, so I think it would be useful to learn to focus more on yourself and try to find more of what you are interested in.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, if you want to stay focus on class. First of all you should have enough sleep last night, if you are sleepy during class you can stay on treck. Also during the class should not talk to the student around you. Also you can make notes during teacher teaching that can help you follow what he said and if you have some question you can go ask him leater after class.
ReplyDeleteFor me I'm the person that is easy to be disturbed unless there are something I'm interested in.I will chat with my friends on my phones and iPad sometimes,so I will put them away or turn off the message notifications.And I should have a good rest during the night.Imagine that if you stay up to 4am in the morning then go to the bed,you won't have a good status in class.And you can force yourself to take notes from your teacher if you can take good notes,that means you paid attention to this class. That's all the thing I will do to try to pay attention.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, it’s not easy to pay attention for a long time. I am not a person that good at paying attention. But I do have some tip to staying focus. I read an article about pay attention before. It said that some kinds of music such as background music in games can help people be focusing on their works, because those music are designed to help people being focus. Besides that, enough sleep also can help you paying attention in the next day.
ReplyDeleteDo not listen carefully I think this is a very bad habit. If you play cell phones while your teacher is focused, you will not do it when you take the exam. I do not think there are two reasons for not listening carefully in class. First, you are not interested in this course, do not want to hear. Second, you have no rest at night. So if you want to attend class carefully, you should not only like this class, but also have a good rest. Develop good habits Do not play cell phones and computers in class. If I do this, I believe you will be a good student.

ReplyDeletePaying attention is really a hard job for teenagers, especially teenage boys. I am not really good at paying attention, and I am always distracted , so when I was at home and doing homework, I always leave my phone in the living room, although I will miss some important information sometimes, but it is the best way I have used to keep myself focused. While I am in class, I always turn off my phone when I can’t pay attention to the teacher. But there’s also a pretty good way to solve this problem:keep using digital device until all of them are out of power, then you can get yourself some study time.
It is not easy to pay attention. It is very easy for us to be disturbed, and it is much easier to be disturbed in studying. We need to have a way to keep our attention in class. I think everyone should have their own way to get focus. I don’t know if I my way can be able to help, but it is really helping myself.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all you need to have a good rest. Sleep at lest 7 hour can make you not sleepy in class. Then do some preview before the class. You can catch every single key point If you did some preview before the class. That is because you know when to pay attention, so you will not miss them.
But these ideas can only help you a little. The best way to solve this problem is to love studying. If you are always excited to learn. It is impassable to not pay attention.

ReplyDeleteIt's really hard for me to concentrate. When I was at the beginning of the ELL class I had to concentrate to understand what the teacher was saying. In the first half hour of the class I will listen to the teacher very seriously. However, this does not last long because it’s very hard for me to listen to the teacher in English at first. When I got used to it, I can pay attention in the class and follow the teacher’s minds. For concentration, I think people just follow the teacher’s minds and listen seriously.
I think it's not hard to notice, but sometimes you are close to friends or you have problems outside the classroom and you can not take it to your heart. So my advice is not to use my cellphone or to sit in class with my friends.

ReplyDeleteI think that the problem of not paying attention in the classes is the fact that everyone have electronic devices, those are all the time sounding, giving you notification and interacting with you and it’s inevitable to see them so the students put more attention in the device than at the class. I think that the other problem is that the students want to seat with their best friends so they start talking with each other and they don’t put attention to the class and they only chat with their friend.

attention during the class, I have a few ways to pay attention.
Sometimes I dust turn off the sound, but it doesn’t help every
time, a few times I just gave my phone to teacher and asked him to
keep it till end of the class. I don’t chat with my friends a lot,
just 10-15 messages a week, but I chat a lot with my girlfriend,
one time I skied my parents to text my advisory teacher and ask him
to tell teachers that they should take all my electronics for
classes

I think that attending classes seriously is something that most students are unable to do, but if we want to concentrate on classes, we must stay away from the mobile phone and stay away from the iPad. And I can't talk to my friends. But I still think that if you want to take a good lesson seriously, you must rely on interest. If you like this class, you will listen very seriously. If you don't like this course, even if you don't have a mobile phone or an iPad, you won't listen to it seriously. So I think that if you want to take a good class, you must rely on your own interest. Once you have an interest, you will want to learn it.
Paying attention to class is hard, because some classes are boring for me and maybe i've learned it before, but still you need to pay attention to class to not disturb other students who wants to focus on class. For me whoever disturbs the class i just ignore them and thinks they are stupid the way they don't want to learn something from class time. If i can recommend teacher's how to make students to make paying attention to class is, first class time will be short to make students to focus, because if the class time is over than 1 hour students will be bored and trying to do something like they starts to chat or they use their phone to make themselves better, second is the topic which we are learning should be interesting which is useful for students. Everytime i'm trying to focus on class but when someone texts me that makes me crazy if i don't check that message, i think phone jail really does help the quality of class.
ReplyDeleteThe way that I used to use to pay attention is self-cotrol, in our age, there is a big problem which most us have is self-control. For example, for myself, i have to say i am not a good self-controler, and a little bit lazy, and just because of these two point, i always pay more attention on game, texting people or something else, but study. So i really think the self-control is a really big point about how to pay attention on class.
ReplyDeleteChoose a good place to study. The room should be as quiet as possible, and the one thing that will distract you is one thing, such as television, pets, game consoles and the like. In addition, your chair should be comfortable enough and the lighting should be moderate. Don't stress the back, neck, and eyes while studying, because pain can also distract you.
ReplyDeleteDon't study in front of the TV, otherwise you can only do your homework while advertising. Take a break from watching TV or listening to the radio. Learn to take a little look or listen, and a glass of water is enough.
