Is
it important to have a girlfriend/boyfriend? Think of your situation
now, as a teenager, in high school, working on learning English as well
as learning other subjects. Where does having a personal relationship
with someone - someone more than a "friend" - fit into your life? What
do your parents think? (Does that matter?)

- I have been a language teacher (ESL/ELL, French) for 30 years. I have taught in public and private schools, immersion programs, refugee programs, adult/continuing education, elementary, middle, and high school as well as university. Currently I teach ELL at a high school somewhere in New England.
Having a boyfriend/ girlfriend is not really important to me. I may have and may not have it is not a big deal. But now i have one who is more than a "friend". Eventhough I am in a relationship, it didn't affect my studying because my "friend" is also studying abroad too( but in Australia) so we meet similar problems in life and we can solve it together. And I think my parents won't have any disagreements about this relationship.

ReplyDeleteI think is not important, I think life can do a lot of meaningful things, there is no need to put time on these things do not make sense. We can continue to learn and learn what we want to learn.Until the university we can not have the opposite sex friends, finished college can fall in love. But we have more meaningful things to do, do what you like to do. In short, do not let love stop you to learn, we started life, we have to work hard!

ReplyDeleteI think someone have a girlfriend/boyfriend is a good experience in their life. Chinese parents always think that will affect learning but I don't agree with them. In my opinion, they can study together with their boyfriend/girlfriend and if they have some problems in the life they also can solve together. My mother doesn't care about it. She think it's normal. I always talk to her about my friends and also girlfriend. I think my mother like a friend in my life.
ReplyDeleteI think find a girlfriend or boyfriend is good thing, because we are in high school, we have more emotion, and we have friends love, family love and I think we can try to find different love, if we have experience, it will make our life more colorful and interesting, that is why I want to find a girlfriend.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion,we will have a great memory if we have a girlfriend/boyfriend as a teenager. But I do not think it’s important to have a girlfriend/boyfriend. As a teenager, the most important thing is studying and we should focus on this. It’s unnecessary to spend too much time on finding a girlfriend/boyfriend when we are young. At this age we may not know what love is so we can improve ourselves at this age and find a girlfriend/boyfriend when we know what type of people we love. My parents think whether I have a girlfriend/boyfriend or not does not matter.
ReplyDeleteFrom my point of view, it is not important to have a boyfriend or girlfriend but it is okay to have one. As a high school student, the most important thing is studying. My parents think it is too early to have a boyfriend or girlfriend and it will affect my study. On the other hand, we are international students, homesickness is a big problem for us. Having a boyfriend or girlfriend can help you overcome the bad emotions. In conclusion, whether having a relationship is beneficial or not is basically depends on individuals.

ReplyDeleteI think it is not important to have a girlfriend or a boyfriend and is your decision to have a special relationship with someone else, but if you have one, sometimes it is very good, because it makes you happy. But sometimes it makes the life harder...

At my opinion having a girlfriend in high school is acceptable but not the best decision.
ReplyDeleteHigh school is very important period of time when a student getalot of new information that will help him in further university education. But as any other actions having a girlfriend, I.e. being in a relationship takes much time and resources. And in some case, a person wouldn’t have enogh resources and time to both study and be in a relationship, and one of options will be ruined. But at my opinion it would much better to not ruin the study, because it will help you to live in future. And it always be possible to be in a relationship after school/university.
But love is very strange and inconspicuous feeling, if you fell in love - that’s all, you will be thinking about his/her most of the time, text her every day and other romantic stuff. So you will never know will you be alone wolf, or be in a relationship.
So, I think that it depends on a person, someone want, someone don’t want. I have girlfriend she is 17,she live in Moscow Russia in the same city as me, it’s about 5 minuets away from my home. We started to date on 10.04.17.

The other problem that they have another time zone, when I have school she has practice, when she has school I’m sleeping. But anyway I find time to talk with her
When we started to date my dad was evil because I spent a lot of time with my girlfriend and stopped to study.
Now everything is ok, we will meet in 24 days
Having a boyfriend is not important. I’m a sophomore. I think I don’t need a boyfriend now, studying is more important than having a boyfriend. I have a lot of homework to do everyday. My time is not enough. There is no doubt that I don’t have extra time to pay a boyfriend. I have a friend in Chicago. His mother and my mother are good friends. We playing together since child. This year is his first year to studying abroad, too. So we always talk about our life and have competitions about English. My parents think it doesn’t matter to have a boyfriend after 18 years old.

ReplyDeleteI think it is not necessary to have a boyfriend or girlfriend during school as any students. But the fact is if you have a nice partner that the person will make your life much better than before. In the personally speaking, I think it is necessary for me because I think I need some experiences on girls. Some of them maybe fall in love with purpose. The name is gold digger although I'm not rich that I will give her everything I have if I love the person. My parents don't care about my life about love and they only give me the tip- Condom is very important! It is responsible for you and your girlfriend. ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think having a girlfriend is important because she will keep you motivated in everything. She will be there with you through your dark days, in your worse moment. And I think my parents will be very happy if I have a girlfriend ( I'm still looking for her ). It would be a life-changing event for me if that comes true, because I've failed so many times. I swear I'll quit video games if I have a girlfriend, but I'm still playing now. Guess it's not my time yet.
And I think having someone "more" than a friend is great ! We can share anything without hesitation. He/She can be your "fake lover". That's cool, too.

ReplyDeleteWith me, having a girlfriend is one of the most imoportant thing. Now, i dont have a girlfriend because i dont like to love American Girls or maybe i havent found but honestly, i only like to love Vietnamese girls. We have the same languages so there will be many things to talk but love a different nationality maybe hard because i dont understand their cultures. But when i come here, i hope that i can have an experience with an American Girl. While loving a girl, there are some pros and cons but im with the pros then the cons because when i have a lover i can share many things with her and sometimes we can do something to relax and reduce the stress. Instead of that the only cons is that sometime the couples will get angry with each others and they will think a lot and dont care about their academics. With me, having a girlfriend is really needed. I wish that i can have a girlfriend soon because my parents say that i need to have a girlfriend in here so i dont use my phone anymore

ReplyDeleteHaving a girlfriend is one of the most important things to make my life become more interesting. Unluckily, I don't have any girlfriend in TA, haven't found anyone yet... Having a girlfriend can really make me to become a more positive person. She can motivate me whenever I have to face against problems. Also, I can share everything with her, happiness, sadness and most importantly, I have to have enough knowledge to love someone because the loving without knowledge can cause very serious consequences.
ReplyDeleteIn my mind. I don’t think it is very important to have a boy or girl friend in high school. I think it is not necessary. It will take a lot of time form you. So you will have less time to do your stuff. It will not help you With every thing. Even your grade. Because you can only spend less time. Otherwise even you have enough time time doesn’t means you have enough time in the future. For me I would spend my time for some meaningful thing, and some computer games.

ReplyDeleteI think having a girlfriend/boyfriend is not that important for our age, because if you have a relationship with someone sometime it is annoying to our study work. For us international student a lot of students or having long distance dating, so when i'm in school she or he need to go sleep, so it is not important for us in now age. Also my parents support when i have a girlfriend and they gives me an extra money for hanging out with my girlfriend.

DeleteIn my personal opinion, I think is not important to have a girlfriend or boyfriend. First of all, in high school years we need pay a lot more attention on study. It's not a good time to make a special relationship which is higher than friendship. Second, a lot of facts show that having a girlfriend or boyfriend will affect the study. Everyone said they will control themselves to working harder because they can improve with girlfriend and boyfriend. But we are all teenagers and we can not control ourselves so well. Also, in my country our parents and teacher not usually allow us to have this special relationship with others. So it's not important to have boyfriend or girlfriend in this period time.

Personally speaking, I do not really think that having a girlfriend or boyfriend for us in our age is very important though it also is fine to have one. Because first of all, as a high school student, especially a international student, studying is our biggest job and duty. Making a girlfriend or boyfriend might interfere our studying.
ReplyDeleteHowever, making a girlfriend or boyfriend also will bring you some advantages. It can expand your friend circle and give you force for studying. For my parents, I think they will tell me you have to make a cautious choice.
All in all, having a girlfriend or boyfriend have both advantages and disadvantages. And it is not really important for us to do.
In my opinion, having a girlfriend is not important to a high school student. But having a girlfriend is not a bad thing, girlfriend can make boy being better! treating a girlfriend is difficult. In the beginning you are nervous, you want cover up your disadvantage, but gradually she will accept you. And sometimes you even can change some bad habits for her. However that is dependent on she understands you and can spend time for you. In the high school everybody is busy with studying. So in this way I prefer spend my all time to improve myself, including knowledge and think.

ReplyDeleteIs it important? Well, it is only important that it is important to us. As the human, we have been built very complex modern social relationships with other. In the ancient time, our ancestors had really tight and small group of people. Therefore they had limited to know other people besides their tribes. Since then, our brain has been changed, even now. We developed a highly romance society. Look at our songs, our movies and all of other media. Not only there, check your Facebook or use Google you can see all the kind ad or the information of love. Think about our languages. At the very beginning, the purpose of our languages was not to studying or learning, but to chatting, expressing one's emotions or even sharing gossip. Can you think that history professors chat about the reasons for World War One meet for lunch? Obviously not, they rather talk about gossip or their feel. As the homo sapiens, we are a social animal. Even social anxiety disorders, they also need to find some reliability people. And two totally different people, that they can meet each other. The chance is that small. You meet someone, maybe not the "right" one. But the chance you to meet is one over seventy billion. That is a minimum probability to meet one person. If you have someone that you truly loved, you need just do it. Opportunity knocks but once.

In my opinion, I don’t think having a girlfriend is important in high school. I am a emotional person ,if I have a girlfriend, that means I really love her. However, most lovers can’t keep their relationship for a long time in high school. I am really afraid of the break up moment. In addition, having a girlfriend will spend a lot of time, I am a junior this year so I don’t want to spend too much time on these things. I think having a girlfriend after high school is a wiser choice.

I think for us it is more important to learn English than other class, because now we are learning in America and we use English if we are English not very well we will can't understand other classes. My parents don't mind to my having a boyfriend, because my parents they are fall in love from high school.

I think people have girlfriends/boyfriends is not very important, especially in our present age .In China, parents certainly will not agree. But I think a person if they met a person they like,do not miss him (her ).Because in this world,people can meet their favorite people is not very easy,so we should cherish. Now I met that man, the only one I love,I will cherish him. He can make me laugh,no one can let me like that.I'm falling in love with someone who holds my hand during the scary parts of horror movies,I'm falling in love with someone who sees galaxies in my eyes and hears music in my heartbeats. I'm falling in love who hugs me in the cold. We do many things together, we study together, eat together, share many things with each other. I'm so lucky that I have him.I hope everyone can meet this person, and then catches them.

Many people think that there are boys and girls in high school is not good, will affect the study. But I think this does not affect the study, but will promote the motivation of both learning. But my parents don't think so.They think they make me study in USA. I need get a good mark. if I have girlfriend I'll spend a lot of thought on her,so I can't get good mark. I do not understand any connection between the two.

When I was reading the answers that other students wrote. Most of them think find a boyfriend or girlfriend is not important. I disagree with that. I had a girlfriend when I was in China. She is so beautiful. She is so good at dancing and she is the sports committee of our class. Once we were having dinner and she accidentally pouring meal on my favorite clothes. I was super angry and shouted under a big rain. After that she apologized to me and I forgave her. She felt so sorry and texted me often. We fall in love with each other because the close relationship. That experience changed me a lot. I learned how to love, how to take care about the other people and how to be a good man. We broke up because of the distance. I am very thankful for her for teaching that meaningful principles to me. Now I am single, but I don't worry about that. Cause I am trying to be a better man who can make his partner happy forever.

Here in TA I think that is cool to have a boyfriend because he can help to improve my English and he can help you in your difficult situations, but if you don't have a boyfriend your friends can help you, so is not very important to have a boyfriend in high school.

ReplyDeleteI think having a boyfriend in high school is not important. High school is an important time to studying and acquire new knowledge. However, if I have a boyfriend it doesn't matter, because I can have my own feelings of love, and experience. My parents don't forbid me about love, if I study hard. They won't let me lose focus on my homework. But they never encourage me from that, because that's my right and my decision.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, having a boyfriend/ girlfriend is not so important. When I have no boyfriend, I can hang out with anyone I want, even boys and no one will get jealous. I can have crushes on any boys I like. But the most important is I have to study hard, get good grades, make money then I will think about having a boyfriend later. My parents say that I can have a boyfriend whenever I want but I have to love him with all my heart and not to go too far in that kind of relationship when I still go to school everday.
ReplyDeleteBase on my experiences, it doesn’t matter if you have a girl/boyfriend or not. Since I’m student, I haven’t made any money yet. Therefore, I still have to depend on parents’ supplies. Second, having a boy/girlfriend means less time for you. Hence, there are some limits to date someone at this age. However, being in a relationship with girl/boy also brings benefit. First of all, boy/girlfriend gives us the motivation for you to move forward in life. You will have to try your best to keep both the relationship and the result at school go well. Second, you will not feel lonely since there is a person who always be there sharing with you.

DeleteI think it is not important to find a girl friend or boy friend, but it's important to catch your true love. In my opinion the high school is easily to find true love. According to the Modern society most of people can't find true love without purpose. More and more people care about marriage but not the true love. If you find girlfriend or boyfriend in the college or after you take a job. Your parents always affect you a lot to care about his or hers family background and what his job it is. I think I'm so lucky to find her in the high school. I love her and I will stand behind her forever.
ReplyDeleteI hope this is not too late but I think there is a high school girlfriend is very important, at least let you feel that in advance as a boy should have a sense of responsibility to take care of a person to love a person, if the mutual can bring Positive influence, mutual encouragement to learn from each other, there is a bridge between each other that is certainly very good.

ReplyDeleteTo have a girlfriend or boyfriend it is not necessary and most important thing for students is to study and you can able to achieve whatever your dream is. But, if you meet someone is special to you or someone important and can make you happy, I think you can’t just let it go, it’s just my opinion. I think have a girlfriend or boyfriend is absolutely not a bad thing, if you choosed a right one for yourself it will make you become a better person. You can learn a lot of experience and you will be more growing up, you need deal with relationships between two of you, also it will become your most memorable time for your life or your high school time. My parents know I have boyfriend, I talk about with them and they are not opposition with it, they think I’m growing up, I need have my own choices for my life, I need to take the responsible for it and they want me to have experience of it.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that you need a serious relationship to improve your English skills, if you have a relation is because you like that person, no for improve your English skills, I think that is better to have a lot of friends because when you're with a lot of people you can talk about a lot of topics, and I think that my parents don't care about my relation with a girl, it's not important for them.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion,I don't think having a girlfriend or boyfriend is a bad thing,but I cannot say that's a good thing either.Because having a girlfriend or boyfriend is a good experience for you.But many be that will effect some of people's grade.And in high it's not easy to keep your relationship going further.Then when you break out,you will be sad I think.So I can't really say is that a good or bad thing for students.
ReplyDeleteI think there is no should not, no value is not worth it, only willingness or not. Everyone to a certain age inevitably thinking independent, separated from their parents, to form their own values and judgments, responsible for their own behavior. I think once a legal minor wants to understand this point. I remember when I was in middle school and high school, I always heard the teacher say: "You have to learn well, do not: puppy love, play video games, watch basketball magazines, play games, play rides, talk to girls behind and hit the teacher with a cell phone ....... these wait until after your university some time to do ....... "In fact, until the university will be the same. So I think if you meet the girl you like to pursue her. Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. and so..........
ReplyDeleteIn my view, I stand in midpoint for this question. I can’t either is important or not. In our present age, the most important thing is study, in China, most of parents even think in our age expect study, everything is unnecessary. In another hand, in our age we got more feeling we are easier to have a love with another boy/girl. To have a boyfriend or girlfriend may be not good for our study, but if we doing this in a good way it also can help as to be mature to have responsibilities.
ReplyDeleteI think isn’t important to have a boyfriend or girlfriend in school. Because we are still in high school and as a student we need to work hard in class instead of being distracted by something like having a boyfriend or girlfriend. And I think we are not mature enough yet, so we may not act responsibly. But I’m not against unrequited love, because that may lead to a positive effect on your studies. (Although it doesn’t work well for me and my score decreased a lotso that’s possibly why I’m here instead of studying in China)
