Journal Question #9

Perhaps the greatest American speaker and leader of the 20th century was Martin Luther King, Jr.  Each year, on the third Monday of January, Americans celebrate Dr. King and his message of nonviolence, equal rights, peace, and justice.  On one hand, you can argue that America - and the world - has made progress in creating a more equitable, just society; on the other, police killings of unarmed people of color, discrimination against muslims in the wake of terrorist attacks, and calls by politicians to prevent immigration into the USA tell us we still have a lot of work to do.  Tell me about your country: are minorities treated equally and fairly?  Do you believe your society is peaceful and just?

  1. I think in my country, the minorities aren't treated equally and fairly. For example, the last examination of the high school for the college in my country.Only the minorities can get the extra 10 credit for the examination. We have 56 nationalities, only the 55 nationalities can get the extra 10 credit except the biggest national-Han national like me.I can't get the extra 10 credit for the examination,so it's unfairly. And in my country,I don't believe it's peaceful. The first reason is the a few of the Xin Jiang people kill the civilian, such as the killing in the train station of Yun Nan.We hate the Xin Jiang people.Actually just a few of Xin Jiang people are bad guys but they make we hate and afraid of them.In fact, these bad guys want the Xin Jiang to become a independent country so they kill the civilian.I think the second reason is the hong kong and Taiwan.Enough people don't like the mainland people, they want to become a independent country either.

  2. I my opinion, in my country the minorities are treat really fairly and equal. Everything depends on the persons. There is a lot of people that respect every type of culture, religion or race and also there is a lot of people that don't respect it. For example, in my school most of the people is from Spain but also there is some people that are from another country and they have another race but they have being living in Spain most of their life's. Everyone in my school respect them and there is not any problem. The point is that my school is catholic so usually there is not any problem with religions. Also in my country there is some people that treat the the minorities unfairly. For example, in some jobs they pay less money to the immigrants than to the people from Spain. In some jobs you can find some inequality in minorities, but is not so common because the constitution of Spain has a law that everyone is equal and we have to respect all the religions, race, cultures, sex...

  3. From my point of view in my country, Spain, the refugees, homeless and people from different races are treated appropriately and adequately. They feel like they were born in Spain, like a Spanish citizen. We treat them equally and fairly, we want a country full of diversity. In Spain we accept a lot of immigrants from South America and Africa, most of them from Morocco. We are hospitable for all kind of immigrants. Yes, I honestly believe my society is peaceful and just. We give jobs to people from other countries and we help them to integrate in our community. We have the same laws for Spanish citizens as for foreigns. Foreigns do not have to pay an amount of money for entering in Spain, they also can have a driver's license and for them the social security is free as it is also for Spanish citizens.

  4. In our country, I am sure that minorities are treated fairly and equally. Our government established a special policy for minorities. Some provinces are built by minorities,so our government think maybe they are do not like the decision which government made, so they can make decision by their own government. That is not mean our armies are not protect them, so they are treated fairly and equally, even better then normal provinces.
Actually I think most of societies are peaceful. Take Hong Kong for example. Many foreigners and the people live in Hong Kong think Hong Kong is an independent country. I talk about the policy our government gave to the special region, because of the policy they generally think they are independent, even they make some demonstrations to show they are independent. So not every society are peaceful, sometimes they are not.

First of all I think that, there is no place in this world were everything is fair and peaceful, that's is impossible. In Spain we are not used to have a lot of people from different countries, here there is a lot of different cultures, but I will not say that In Spain all the minorities are treated the same, is true that is getting better and better, and I hope until the moment everyone is treated with equality, but there is always going to be people with another point of view, and is really sad. In Spain we don't have a historical person like Martin Luther King Jr. Basically because there are not that much variety.

  6. In my opinion, the minority aren’t treated equally and fairly in my country. First, one thing is treated unfairly by taking the final exams in students’ life. In China, every student has been preparing to take the final exams for 12 years from primary school to high school. The student depends on the scores of final exams, so the score is significant. However, if you are minority, you will have 10 points for extra points. I think it is unfair to other students. Secondly, I remember it was a popular video on internet about 3 years ago. It was about Mamat who is from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region ell his transitional food on the road with movable car. Most of people never saw that before, so they brought a little bit. It was so expensive, most of people tried to put the price down. Mamat was unhappy, he took a 15-centimeter knife out. He was kind of threat people to buy the food. Therefore, people have some negative thinks for Uyghur. But I don’t know the video is true or not, I can’t tell. I believe my country is peaceful, but not just because some area are still corruption.

In my opinion, minorities are treated very equally and well. As we all know, the majority of people in China is the Han Nationality. Only 8 percent of the people are minorities. Government provides some special welfare benefits and policies for them. For instance, minorities can get extra 10 points in college entrance examination because that their Chinese skill is not as good as normal Han Nationality people. They can't get good grades in Chinese Examination. So they should have a few advantages like extra points. This policy is very effective and let more minorities enter the universities and colleges. Secondly, minorities don't have birth control. Most of Han Nationality families only have 1 child because of the birth control policy. If you give birth to a second child, you must pay the penalty. The penalty is about 100000 dollars! But minorities don't have to obey this policy. They can have more than 1 child so that the minorities will not become extinct. Thus, we respect them very much.
I think that China is really peaceful because Chinese people are very kind and friendly. We don't love battles and arguments and we never get involved in other countries' arguments. We also always give a lot of money to USA, Canada, Australia, England and so on. These things let China have a good relationship with so many countries. We don't have to worry about the security in China. It's pretty good.

In my opinion, in my country the minorities are treated really fairly and equally. Everything depends on the person, but in general, Spaniards are very open and nice to people. Most Spanish people respect every type of culture, religion or race, but also there are some people that don't respect. For me is not usual to see a black person in the school, but that doesn't mean that I'm not going to be nice to that person. For example, my school is a German school and we have sometimes the luck to have German people who want to stay in our school for a year or less. We really like them because most of the time they are good people. Everyone in my school respects them, and there have been no problems.
Yes, I honestly believe my society is peaceful and just. We give jobs to people from other countries like from Africa. (Some people of Africa work selling tissues at the traffic lights before they are able to work on something better.) We help them to integrate in our community. For instance in Spain the foreigners are able to bring food to Spain without any problem. Many years ago there was a terrorist group called ETA who put bombs under cars and that kind of terrible stuff. The Spanish police arrested all the components of the ETA group, and now there are no problems anymore.

In China, there are 56 nations, and 55 nations are minorities. I really don't think we have some difference, because some of my friends are minorities, but we speak the same thing, we wear the same clothes, we play the same game. So I really can't feel the difference, but I believe my nation which is the biggest nation in China truly made the minorities lost their language and some of their old traditions. And I don't think my society is justice, because in my country. For
example, my middle school in China is really good, but it only the students who have high score can come, so some people use their money to buy their scores that they can come to the school. And this happens in so many schools and even in some big exams.

  10. In my opinion, I think China is a comparatively safe country to others. I have not heard any emergency from China for a long time. People in China do not allow guns in people's hands except soldiers and some people with high political status. However I heard Iraq War recently. America and England started it because they suspect Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. There are lots of other wars going on right now. Afghan War On Terror, Somali Civil War, and The War On Terror in northern Pakistan. I believe there are counties who trying to pry about the greatest Chinese territories. However China fight them back without even having a war.

  11. Martin Luther King, Jr. may be the most famous African American in human history. I admire his great work for the human rights, but I don't fully agree with his nonviolence theory. Very sadly, two great nonviolent activists, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi, both died because of violent actions. That may be the most Ironic part of their political ideas.
I believe the western world have a strange feeling of revolution since communist rising in early twentieth century. Many people think use weapons defend themselves are same as the act of war. I'm not talking about gun control or civil rights of bearing arms. I'm telling you an ongoing real crisis which is happening in Yemen. After their government broke up, some of the local Yemen people rise to organize a military group called “Houthis”. Last year Saudi Arabia invaded Yemen in the name of “Peace Keeping”. Houthis stands against them to defend their homelands but United States seems them as “terrorist group” because of Saudi Arabia’ pressure.
That makes me so much disappointed. I realize some guys who make the decision in government and congress don't really seem the civil rights as the first priority to foreign policy. What they really care is the resources in Middle East and Arms deal with “Honest Allies”.
I don't believe one country's human rights problems can be solved by foreign help. It will only make the problem more complicated and let that country's citizens become the ultimate victims. That's what happened in Syria and happening in Yemen.

  12. In my home country, everyone speaks Chinese and we have the same ideas. I think we are very friendly with each other. There some special ethics in my country. In fact, I come from Inner Mongolia and this is a province that many Mongolian live. People usually are very nice with each other. Minorities in my country are treated equally. Even sometime, the minorities have some good benefits. For example, if you are minorities such as Mongolian, you have 10 extra point in college entrance examination. My country does not have racism and I believe my society is peaceful. People all look the same and we are very unite. There are problems in some area such as Xinjiang and Tibet but they are not very serious.

  13. In my options, I think the minorities are treated equally and fairly. There are 56 nationality in China. Han nationality is the biggest nationality and other 55 nationality are minorities.People are in 56 nationality are all Chinese. It's like a big family. My nationality is called" Man" which is a part of the minorities nationality. I don't think I am treated unequally. Government also gives the minorities special policy. If a minorities student who studies very well, he/she will get the extra score for the high school final exam. People use the final exam score to go to college. That policy is very good for them but, the Han nationality people don't have that policy because there are too many people are Han Nationality. I think our society is always peaceful. Chinese love peace. Lots of people lost family and dead during the World War 2. We spent hardest time during the World War. We know war can't bring anything to us. We don't want make war but, if some countries try to attack us, we will defend our country. We hope to make friends with every country. There is no racism in China. We welcome people are from any countries.

  14. I think in my country, there is discimination to sexual minorities. In Korea many sexual minorities are feel difficult to say that they have another value with most number of people. It is because of the Confucian ideas. From 1600 to early Korea. So that country was really conservative about sexual things.
And It countinue not a lot but some. So, some people think that is fine because that is there choice. But most people think that is really strange to have another value. So there is not many amenities or institution for them. So many people who is sexual minorities hide there sexual values. In my opinion, that is not strange and that is there life. And I think country doesn't have the power to block the people's love.

In my view, minorities are treated equally and fairly. There are 56 nationalities and most of people are Han nationality in China. Many students have very essential exams in high school. Students only have one chance to take exams per year, but most of people believe that it is unfair for minority students to get extra 10 points. In fact, some students study well and get very good grades. They can gain the honor of “Merit Student”. These students also can get some extra 10 or 20 points. Therefore I believe that it’s fair. In my opinion, my society is peaceful in China. Chinese people are very friendly and kind. I think that there is not racism in China. We are very enthusiastic to welcome people who are from other countries. We also have a good relationship with other countries. As a consequence, I believe that my country is peaceful.

  16. In my opinion, we don't have racism in China. In China, we have 56 kind of nation. We have a fair and balanced society. For example we can study in the same school. We also have 9 years compulsory education. We don't have racism, and we preferential policy for minority.

  17. My country is known as Ottoman Empire before Turkey. In that time, Ottoman Empire has many different minorities. Their policy includes many concession for minorities. For a long time everyone lived equal way, but when the defeat and dissolution time came, minorities started to revolt against to Ottoman Empire. After the declared of the Republic of Turkey, Turkey and Entente powers signed ''Treaty of Lausanne'' and Turkey accepts Greeks, Armenians and Jews as minorities. Today many different nationalities still living in Turkey and in my opinion, my country treat equally and fairly for them because they can go to their own schools or pray their in own chapels. Of course, sometimes disagreements happens, but usually people live in peaceful.

  18. In our country, minorities are much better than a lot people, they can get better condition, for instance minorities students don’t need test, but they still can enter the good college. It is unfair for a lot of students. On the other hand, our country is more peaceful than many country, we have good regulation institution and we seldom happen quarrel or fight each other. For example, our guns ratio less than many other countries. So I think our country is peaceful.

  19. In my opinion racism is never going to die. In my opinion almost all people sometimes think about that...There are was, there is and there will be "smart" people who manipulating majority of society. They inspire people think the way that they want.
Some people have mental breakdowns when someone or group of people give pressure on them because there ethnicity, color of skin etc., but some people are strong and they fight for there rights and i respect that kind of people. Yes, there are rasism in my country but I cant tell that there a lot of it or maybe i just didnt see it..
We can talk a lot about this theme but not many of us can change this world.

  20. Our country doesnt have many of minorities but still there are some of them.I live in a small town where we can find one of these minorities too.Because of that I can tell you how people react to them.I think there is still a kind of racism because most of the people dont like them and they want them to leave our country.I know why most of them are known because of their bad attacks against others and also some thefts and stuff like that.So many people dont give them second opportunity to show us that there are many of good people from them too. Most of minorities never get job because of their bad past.So here is my question:Where is the democracy now? There shouldnt be any type of racism now.Everybody can live their freedom life!People should change opinions to many things! They shouldnt waste their time by bullying others just because they are not same!

  21. In my opinion, minorities are treated equally and fairly in my country. First of all, in the last examination of the high school, minorities always can get extra points. Second, government request big company employee minorities. At this point, minorities can find jobs easily. And also in the government, the legal request government has minorities' officer.

I believe my society is peaceful and just even no absolute peaceful and just, but I think, at least, all people are equal before the law. As long as you commit a crime, you will be punished according to law.

  22. Minorities are special, I think this is a truth in most countries. You asked me if it’s treated equally and fairly? I can not say it really clearly. I believe that there must be some people are having the same feeling. Because in China, there are 56 nationalities. There are 55 minorities among them. I don’t really know what do the minorities think because I’m not. Since I went to primary school, I just knew if a person is minority, he/she is special. He/she will have priorities. For example, they have the bonus in the entrance examinations for both secondary school and college. Even about the birth policy, the Chinese government just have the wide birth policy to ethnic minorities. This wide inequality fertility policy making part of the ethnic minorities up to 13 children, the children of the minority population growth rate is much higher than the national average. It causes of reverse discrimination to the main ethnic. As a result, some people think that this is back in the constitution the principle of ethnic equality. Even some people worry about the change of China's national population, will lead to China's multi-ethnic country internal appear unstable factors.

  23. I think I can be really thankful and happy for my country, because I know how some countries are. And our minorities are trying to be fairly, but sometimes it doesn't work. It's really hard to be equally for everybody in some point. I feel that my country is peaceful or we're trying! But world at all is really not. They just talk about it , but nothing happens. In my opinion it is about people. We should be fair and just for everyone ,because what we are going to give the same we are going to gain. I am glad for my country but of course everything can be better. Without peace and love world can't exist.

In my country, the minorities treated equally and fairly. There is only one thing that I cannot accept. There are 56 different nationals in China, and I belong to Han, which is the most people from. In the the university entrance exam, other 55 nations could get extra, instead of Han which is my national. In the society, I think it's fair and not exactly peaceful. The reason is that there are some people who from West of China don't like people who from other provinces. They try to make a mess in China. Last year, the people whom from West of China killed a bunch of people. They killed people, because they said it's not peaceful. But I think, it's peaceful in China.

  26. In my country, the minorities treated is not equally. For example, if people are minorities, when they are taking the test for the college, they can get extra credit on the test. So they can get into college easier than normal people. I my opinion, I think this is a right things to do. China has a lot of people, but the minorities just a small group. The government should help them join the society. Also I think the society never be peaceful. There is not one hundred percent goodness people in the world. Everyone has violent from inside. People always want to get benefits from others. I think peaceful society just like belief, people can try to stay close for it, but they never reach it.

  27. Treating minorities equally and peacefully is not realistic. There are 55 minorities in China. Most of minorities have no differences. Some minorities who live in Tibet are so rude because they extort money from visitors and government. Minorities also earn ten extra points in high school exam. That makes students who doesn't belong minorities to change their registered permanent residence. Most of Chinese don’t like being friends with Tibet minorities because of negative influence from some violent minorities. People from different region need different ways to treat. They have different religions and contrasting life. There are over 14 billion people in China. Governments can’t treat everyone equal and peace.

  29. I believe that my country now is peaceful and almost everyone is treated fairly. I’d like to explain the reasons to you but because I am still a high school student so I will mainly talk about if it’s fair at school.

As a beginning, I ’d like to talk about the meaning of treating fairly. In my opinion, treating someone fairly means people don’t look at others in different ways because of their different family background or regions. In China, at least in public school, no one cares about how rich your family is, the only thing all students and teachers are looking for is grade. I think it is very fair to treat people will ability better than others because it means that everyone has a chance to become successful. “Gaokao” is the worst dream to all high school students in China. Everyone is the same that there is only one chance. We usually call that “Your whole life is decided on that test”. To be honest, it is a kind of cruel and even some high school students kill themselves because they can’s hold the pressure. However, no matter how cruel it is, every one is the same that your grade means which school you can get in. Five years ago, there were some greedy officials accepted bribes and they let some students whose grades are under the grade line get into the school. But now, things have been changed a lot that many greedy officials were arrested in the past two years and the government started to check very strictly to high-level officials even some of their passports were taken away because the government wants to prevent them escape to other countries.

Some people might say that there is no true fairness in the world. Yes, same as that we can’t find anyone that is perfect, we can’t find any place that in exactly fair. I am not talking about the exact fairness, the government can only achieve mostly fair and I believe that people in my country are treated fair.

  31. We had so many minorities like greek, armenian, albanian etc. We were living together with them. We were living with peace. Nothing was bad. But then if we are going to look the current time of Turkey, my country is in a bad situation. Now there are kurdish, syrian, iraqi people in my country. I am not a racist person but some of them are trying to destroy Turkey and they want to make a their own country. It is our country and we are living in that place together for so many years. But because of all of these, east part of Turkey is not Turkey for me anymore. Because kurish people conquered there. For sure after all of bombs there is racism in my country. We are trying to be friendly to everybody. But there is no peace in my country anymore.

  32. Thanks, everyone, for your comments, some of which were very interesting. No matter how peaceful and just we perceive our society to be, there is still injustice and violence in every society. Dr. King's example - in his life and his words, tells us the struggle for equality and peace is neither easy nor ever finished.
