- I have been a language teacher (ESL/ELL, French) for 30 years. I have taught in public and private schools, immersion programs, refugee programs, adult/continuing education, elementary, middle, and high school as well as university. Currently I teach ELL at a high school somewhere in New England.
In my opinion for me and most of the people in my country is a Columbus something like a hero.
ReplyDeleteI know that there must be some people with him who helped him to discover America because it is impossible to discover that big thing just by yourself without any help in my opinion.But everytime I am thinking about Columbus in my mind appears that maybe without Columbus there won't be America how we know it nowadays.Maybe this continent just disappear without his help.I mean we don't need to speculate about if he was hero or not I am just grateful that America is here that is all that matters in that case.Also the word discovery it is not that truth because there were some people before Columbus came there but we don't need to be mad about him that he owns that he ,,discovered" America it is just because he is famous known by that.
In my opinion Colon is a hero because if he didn't discover America in that time other person would discovered that but many time after that date. Thanks of Colon the people of that time had many new products and invents that changed or saved their lives.I think that there were less starving since colon brought new products from America. Im a little bit agree with the people that say colon could be less aggressive but maybe he had to be like that because the indigenes wanted to protect their houses and they fighted with spanish militars. I think Colon helped America because they were underdeveloped and colon made that process faster. Even one of my opinion is that exclavization with indigenes was the hardest thing ever, they hurtled them and treated them like objects. Any human can be treated like objects and work 24/7. He was a hero but he could do many things better , and I don't say that because I'm Spanish and colon conquered America in the name of Spain.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I think that Colon is a hero because he discovered a very big country that is America and It is true that maybe if he didn't discover it another person will did it but I'm from Spain and I'm so proud because that is a great thing for us . Also I think that Colon improve a lot of things from that country like the food and all the style of life but I think that he did it in a wrong way because nobody have to be treated like he treated the indigenes that were living there . Also I think that Colon help in the development of America .So for me he is a hero and I think that America is an important country now a days in one hand because of the discovered of Colon.

ReplyDeleteI think Columbus is a hero. Because he is the first one who has the plan to across the Atlantic Ocean in that time. He is brave and daring, so he find America. But everything has two sides, Columbus discovered America, so he and the after him will do something bad to the native Americans. If he didn't discovered America, maybe will not have America, or maybe another person will discovered America, and he will do the same thing to native Americans as well.
I think without Columbus discovering america, then the americas won't have white and hispanic race and also latin and south including America's state of florida wont be speaking spanish anymore. so if columbus didn't discovered america then america wont be having today's life.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I don't think Columbus is a bad guy. Someone told me because him, European killed many Americans. I really don't agree with him.I think, as the sail skill develop, other people also will discover North America. At that time,also many people will died.
ReplyDeleteColumbus discovered North America, at that time, there are didn't better than now, it's kind of huge difference between nowadays. I think discovered helped North America developed. Many European came to here and began built. Many new things happened after they came. Americans also learned many science and technology. If Columbus didn't discovered here, I believe now America is not good as now. So he is a good guy.

ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that Christopher Columbus is a hero. Because he found a new place to live. Also this place is America which is the most powerful country in the world. If he did not find America at that time, maybe the name of America and the strength of this country could be different. Even he found America, there were people who already were living there called "Indians". So the event "Christopher Columbus discovered America" is not totally true. But just because Indians did not know that they were living in the different country which is America, Columbus found that it was another country named America. For that past years, without any technology or machines, new places are hard to find. So i think Columbus Holiday is a meaningful holiday for world history.

I don't know a lot about that situation, but I know columbus is hero in america, but he do a lot of bad things to Indians and he is Colonialists and monstrous murderer. I think columbus is hero in world history because after that, people who have high-technology move to america, So, they can use america economically. So, now day’s world could be existence. But on the other hand, he killed and take Indian’s life space and make slave. I think they can celebrate, But they have to remember sacrifice of Indians.
ReplyDeleteEvery year, Americans celebrate that day on second Monday of October. I think this is an important day for those who live on the American continent because if Columbus didn't discover this place, maybe they would be different people to those who live there today. Columbus landed on one of the islands in the Caribbean but he thought he landed in India. When he landed there he met some Native Americans but he called them ‘’Indian’’ because he thought he was in the India. If we are talking about the Indian states in America, they didn’t celebrate this day because they think Columbus slaughtered the Indians. In my opinion, yes Columbus is a hero and his discovery was a good event in history because America is an important country in the world. If America discovered by another person at another time, became an important country like today?
ReplyDeleteOctober 12th in 2015 is Columbus Day. It is an American holiday that celebrates the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. In my opinion, Christopher Columbus is a hero. He is the first person to find this supercontinent in 15 century in the world. He started in Spanish, and went across the Atlantic Ocean. Finally, he found America. In fact, he was looking for treasures in India, and he thought he found it. In this continent, there were a lot of people already, whom he called “Indians”. Some people think Columbus was a evil person, because he brought Europeans to North America. Europeans killed native America, brutalize them, and enslaved them. It was a disease for them. I feel so bad for them. Even thought finding North America was a bad situation for native America, but it was a significant event in the world history.

ReplyDeletecomment people completely.Columbus found the America coincidently. He wanted find India at the first, but he found America. He told the queen of Spain. British progeny also moved to America land and build United States. I think most American people may think Columbus is a hero. He found America land and affect world and America. If Columbus doesn't find America land and doesn't tell all the world. Maybe America land still is a desolation land. There is no United States and United States can't be the strongest country in the world. For American Columbus is a hero. But, for African and Indians, and Native Americans, Columbus is a villain.
After Columbus found the America land, Columbus killed Lots of Indians or brought them back to Europe and made them to be slaves. He also bought the animals that has disease and killed
some Native Americans. European also brought Africans to the America land and made them to be slaves and brutalize them. They may think Columbus found the America land was a mistake.
If he didn't found America land so they couldn't to be slaves. In fact, Columbus affect the world and history and America. I think his exploits exceed his fault.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, Christopher Columbus isn’t a bad guy. In stead, I think he is a greatness guy, because he discover a brand new place and also discover new indigenous group that we known as Indian. At that time, Christopher Columbus brought several Indian back to Spain, but they don’t let that Indian to be salves, Christopher Columbus let them to be a noble. So, of course, I think he is a good guy. But, he might also did some wrong thing such as kill some guy on the North of America.

It is really important although Christopher Columbus himself thought he found a short way to get to India. In the world history, no matter the research of the geography or history, he gave them a lot of valuable information, so that now we can learn about Indian. So, I think Christopher Columbus is a hero.
I think Columbus is hero,but other sides they are bad guys,they are outlive tough journey to across the ocean,nobody find American at that time, and nobody know American,but they find Native American by Columbus, if he not here,American never found,probably there are not American in the world,since they find American,let person know Native American,after they came,the American know how to learn and study,but on the other hands Columbus do a lot of bad thing to Indians,let Indians no home,no family,it is too bad,but for Columbus discovery American is pretty good events for history,let everybody know.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think that Christopher Columbus is a hero. He is one of the most famous navigators and first discovered America. If he didn’t discover this place, other navigators also would find it soon. But name of America and this history would be different. It still had a big influence for people society and civilization. He expanded and developed important trades from Atlantic Ocean. It made country more rich and flourishing. It would be beneficial for people to learn a lot of skills. He also could improve many connections with other countries. In 1492, in addition, there were not any technology to use. It was really hard to find America. He spent too much time arriving America, it could encourage too many people have brave spirits. So I think that Christopher Columbus is a hero.

In my opinion, Columbus is a hero, because he made the lane to the America. He discovered a big and most powerful in the world, which is America. He is also the most famous navigator and colonist. Although some people think that he was a disaster for Native American, I don't think so. He is not the first one who found the North America, and he is second. Somebody would find the America too if he didn't. His discovery is a good event in the world. The North America was a original place before Columbus came. Europeans came to the America and exploited the America. It was devolving so fast after his discovery. The America is the most powerful country in the world, it because of Columbus's discovery.
In my opinion Columbus was a hero. Even if the most educated Europeans already believed the Earth was round. Some people still believe that Earth was flat. Columbus was brave because even with the question unanswered, he went forward. He also wanted to try a new route to India. Columbus was a man like the rest of us, not good or just, but generally he had good intentions. I know he didn't "discover America" , but he informed rest of the world abaut the America that we know now. He completely transformed people's ideas abaut the size of the world. He gave people new knowledge abaut a new region, new people... Many people criticize Columbus for some side effects of that voyage. They remove the importance of what he did.

In my opinion Columbus is good person, not hero but not evil. He was interesting in opening new sides of the world. He tried his best in it, so why he must've evil? Some people did do nothing, or other we're doing a lot of work, hard work and didn't go far from their home. He had his hypothesis how to go cross all world and open new country. He spend a lot of time, I think, to decided his way. He crossed Atlantic Ocean, and didn't die. For that time ships travels were dangerous. Now all world now who is he, what did he do. In Ukraine we learned it in the firs year of geography, so it's very important person for the world. Even he didn't open India, he tried to do something, we should respect his work. Also in America it's a celebrate. I think he is good man, he didn't spend his life, like it will go, he tried to made it interesting.
American celebrate Columbus Day on the October 12th. They think Columbus is a hero. He found the Americas. He taught them how to use the gun, how to speak a language and make houses. Americans think he is a hero, but Indians doesn't think he is a hero. They think before Columbus come they lived together, and they were very happiness. After Columbus and some Europeans came to the Americas. Their family got kill, friends had be enslave. Indians think they were living in the hell. So I think Columbus is a kind of like a hero.

In my opinion, Columbus is a hero. His discovery is a good event in world history. The discovery effect and change the world. Americans invented a lot of significant product for the world. Such as cellphone, computer, Television and so on. These techniques changed our life. Let our life colorful.
Now, America is the most powerful country in the world.

I think Columbus is a hero.From the view of Columbus, who was a colonist and predator, the reason to slaughter Indians is obvious: firstly, it aims to reduce local population to occupy bigger size of land; secondly, Indians could be shocked and frightened and dared not to disobey to enslavement and plunder. In this way, European and Indian didn’t fell into too much entanglement, which accorded with Columbus’s purpose of gaining class interests and fortune. In fact, a lot of Indians died because they lacked immunity to disease from Europe. The European population rapidly expanded in the fifteen century. The discovery of New Continent offered places for emigration and accession to more mineral and raw materials.
For me Columbus was a hero. Because he discovered a very big country. Now America is one of the best countries in the world. America is very strong country in economics and freedom. Of course Columbus make not the right thing with Indians. But who know, who now what will be with us, if he didn't do it. So for me Columbus is the hero!

What I think it's that Columbus is a hero but on other hand it wasn't just him who discovered America. This is really big and such a important event for world history. I fell in love with United States so for me ( I can say) it's big thing too.

Maybe we can say that he and other few people found a beautiful place for life. I think on the 12th of October world get new amazing continent and new chapter. I wish that could be more people like him in this world :-)
Well... He is a hero to some extent. Just like for the long history, he discovered America and introduction of other cultures to America although it was not his real intention. But for American, he is a villain. He broke the peace of their place and enslave them. So, he is also a bad guy to some extent. Anyway, nobody knows how to describe his behavior clearly. I think it had two sides, it can't be treated different things as the same.

And I think he is the beginning of America, because he is first person who find North America. If he didn't find North America at that time, America might not a powerest country in the world. There is really interesting thing when he came to North America. India people lived in the North America, they looks like people who came from India. So Columbus thought he was in India at that time. Also some people think he is bad guy. I agree it. There are people lived in the North America. But after Columbus came, many India people lost their home.
ReplyDeleteNowadays, an increasing number of people are concerned about the Columbus who discovered the North America. However, whether Columbus was or was not a hero is a controversial issue. My view is that Columbus is a hero based on the following sentences.
ReplyDeleteColumbus suggested the Queen of Spain to help him having trade with eastern country such as India and China by financial support. Columbus told his great plan to other western countries such as: Italy , France, England but unfortunately, their kings refused his plans because Columbus wanted 10 percent of the total treasure and wanted to get investiture from these countries. Finally he used his abundant knowledge and nautical technology to get the financial support.
Columbus doesn't have too many way to India because Portugal locked the Cape of Good Hope where located the nearest way to India. Columbus has to select the other way to get India which is far away from the nearest way. When his crew facing a plenty of risks, he finally arrived on the huge land. But after investigation for this land, he realized that he discovered the new land called America. Only aboriginal people live in the new land. According to increasing resources have been plundered, European started to find more resources and more spaces. Gradually, America became a colony and Europe killed lots of aboriginal people.
Columbus didn't realize the importance of discovering new land. Even he only cared about money, but he is still a hero for most of Americans.
I think Columbus is the hero for his discovery and the discovery of the new land makes the world to develop. However, I don't think he is a hero because he is bad to the Native American people. At first, Columbus believes that the American land he discovered was Asia but the. It was actually the new land. He discovers the new land accidentally. Also, he kills Native American and take their land. When they firstly arrived, they don't know how to plant food and build houses. When they spare going to die, Native American helps them to live. It is wrong to kill people who helps you. I think Columbus is not a hero because he kills innocent people.

It just like Ying Zheng who is the first empirer In China at Qin dynasty. He also did some bad things like tyranny, destroying some important books. But the evaluations people gave him are positive. So I think Columbus is a hero like Ying Zheng.

The Columbus Day
I think Columbus is a vile and violent person, even though he find America this land.
The American native people who called “Indians” welcomed Columbus and his boatman came in America. The natives even had a huge party with Columbus to show their welcome. However Columbus started a war between the natives. Columbus had better weapons than natives. Columbus killed most of the native people and drave them into the deep woods.
In my opinion, Columbus is more like a pirate captain instead of an explorer. Explorers would bring their better technology to the natives, and exchange something they do not have from the natives. However he killed natives who do not want to listen to him. He capture natives’ young girls for satisfying his sexuality. He even stared slave trade for money.
The Columbus Day is more like commemorate those sacrifice to me instead of celebrate the discovery day.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Christopher Columbus ( Cristóbal Colón ) is a hero, in Spain everyone like him a lot, and we are really proud because he sailed with Spain, so we are really proud of that.
I know that there is a lot of different points of view because they said that he killed a lot of native people, but I didn't learned like that so my mind is not going to change.

When he finded North America, Columbus thought he find a another way to Asia. He even
still believe it until he died. Hero always on behalf of justice. I think he is villain for what he
had done to Native American. Anyway he is a bad person but his discovery its a big event
for human history.
Thanks, everyone, for your comments on Columbus - most seems to see him as a hero, though everyone acknowledges the mixed blessing of the European discovery of the New World. Of course, it's impossible to rewind history; we are left with Columbus' legacy whether we like it or not.
ReplyDeleteColumbus is a hero. The hero who let the western world know what the other civilizations looks like. However Columbus didn't mean to discover the America. He actually wants to find a way to the Far East.
ReplyDeleteColumbus failed to his original goal and he never recognized what he found is a new continent until his death.
According to the truth above, Columbus was not a successful man at his life time. In addition, I don't think we should blame him for the races baiting toward Native Americans. The real murderers were the following Spanish colonizers. They destroyed the great Central American empires and killed everyone rebellion against them.
So Columbus do nothing to the 'Indians', which he thought is the people from India

country. Refugges is some people who leave they own country, go to another country for
some bad reason. Some refugees don't like the government, cause they can't give people
good life or they can't make them happy. Some can't fell enough safety. If some country
said"no you can't come to our country" to refugees, the refugees will cross illegally to the
country, just like the picture u show us. I'm sure it's not a safe boat. The boat can tips
anytime, then some people gonna die. Right now this illegally cross its still going on. Not
all of the way are safe. So I think European country should allowed refugees.
In my opinion. He could be either a hero or bad guy. He discovered a new land and it became to the strongest country in the world. As this point, his a hero. But he also brought virus. It killed a lot of people who were born in here. Then the people from other countries even killed the most of them. He is a worst person for these "Indian" people.

I don't think that Columbus did a wrong thing because if Columbus were not found America someone else would do that. Yes he done many bad stuff to native Americans and kill many of them but it was not only his decision. There was many people who support him and maybe they was just afraid of Native Americans. I can't say that he is hero but I can't say that he done something wrong.
