Journal Question #5

This is a painting by Winslow Homer, an American artist of the 19th century.  Homer is most famous for his watercolors, and his subject was often the ocean or other bodies of water.  He had a studio on Prout's Neck on Cape Elizabeth, which is very close to Saco and Thornton Academy.  Right now, the Portland Museum of Art has a big show of Homer's paintings - I recommend going to see them if you get a chance.  Do you enjoy seeing great painting?  Do you have an artist you especially admire?  In your opinion, what makes a great work of art?

  1. Leonardo da Vinci is the Italian painter researching space correlation of perspective during the European Renaissance. "The Last Supper" is a creation by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci, one of the most famous works of the world art treasure. The characters in the picture, the panic, anger, doubt, demeanor, gestures, eyes and behavior, are carved exquisite detail, vivid. Leonardo da Vinci created a system of art, devoted painter of learning methods, lifestyle and moral cultivation. It is also the reason why he can always make great work of art.

  2. Van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) one of the most famous and successful painters. Van Gogh was a mentally sick person, in his history it said that he cut one of his ears. I like him because he has his special, unique technic to draw. Most of his works look like a bunch of jerky lines which make a picture. I like this technic. I'm an artist my self and I love art ,it's beautiful. All artists have their own unique style of drawing and Van Gogh had his, that what makes him special for me.

  3. In my point of view, every artists have their own style of painting which is why they are famous now. And I don't have a specific artist to admire. But I do have a genius to share with you, I like his homophonic name of meaning angel. Raphael is one of the traditional trinity of great masters during the Renaissance. I think his success depends on his diligence and creativeness. Also people died then went famous. His work Spasimo ‖ brought a new degree of expressiveness of his art. Art is one of the most important development of human being. it has the concept of how we interpret aesthetics. I always enjoy to be an addict for guessing some purposes.

  4. To be honest,I am not interested in the art at all. Therefore,I don't have my favorite artist. But in my mind,I think the art is great.Humans use their emotion and inspiration create the art works.Artists spent a lot of time and energy on it.Even some of them spent more than ten years to make a art work, you can imagine how great they are,and how great the art is!
I thought the art works are reaction of what the artist thought in their deep mind.It represents people's soul.

He was one of the most famous artist at Renaissance. the pope forced him to worked for him, but he didn't want to. He always worked for the people that he don't want to work for. Although he had a tragic life, he still had some fantastic master prices.

  6. From Jerry Wang:

I am not born for art. I do not have a sense to appreciate them as an expert. Although I do not have a specific artist that I admire, I am impressed by their work. I can never understand and comment about the abstract art work because I just do not know what is that. I enjoy reading comic books and I consider that as a kind of art style too. My favorite comic is ONE PIECE. It is a part of the JUMP comic book and is later made into a cartoon show. It is mostly famous and interested me because of its amazing plot and the drawer's imagination. But the drawing is also good, it can clearly describe a scene. Admittedly, comparing to the works form Van Gogh and da Vinci, ONE PIECE may not be conserved in the work famous museum, but comic is a kind of art work

  8. For my opinion, there are many good artist on art. But my favorite artist is Salvador Dali. He was born in Spain in 1904. When he was a child, he showed strange behavior and often interrupted his class in school. As he came older, he started to paint pictures of his dreams. Actually, his dreams and painting were scary and unreal. Salvador Dali went to art school in Madrid, Spain. He got kicked out, and never finished it. He even spent time in jail. However, he continued to paint, and his art style became known as Surrealism. Before he died at the age of 85 in 1989, Dali had created works in film, ballet, opera, fashion, jewelry, and advertising illustrations. His life affects me. That is why he is my favorite artist.

  9. Actually, I am not interested in art. I don't appreciate any paintings because I can't understand what they are painting. But I am very impressed by Van Gogh. His paintings are so different from other artists. His paintings are unique and fantastic. Unfortunately, I still can't understand his style. Van Gogh is special and he has his own personality and understanding in art. That's why makes him so famous. Also, that's why makes an artist great.

  10. When I was in primary school, I had been learning Traditional Chinese Painting for one year. Traditional Chinese Painting was very difficult to learn, to did well you must have a very good drawing ability. My favorite artist at that time was Beihong Xu, who was a famous Traditional Chinese Painter. He was graduated from Fudan College. His famous opus is horse. I think the most important thing to make a good art is that you have a good insoiration.

Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for his landscape paintings of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home—now known as "Constable Country"—which he invested with an intensity of affection. His most famous paintings include Dedham Vale of 1802 and The Hay Wain of 1821. But he sold more paintings in France than in his native England.

  12. I don’t enjoy seeing great painting and I also don’t have an artist that I admire. In my point of view, a great work of art doesn’t need a very high painting technology, doesn’t need a nice drawing paper and there is also no need to put it in the exhibition hall. Just like Mr. Behrman in the story , he draw a leaf in order to give Johnsy a belief to live although he lost his life; in my opinion, this is a great painting because it gives a person a belief.

My favorite artist is Raffaello Sanzio, (April 6 or March 28, 1483
    – April 6, 1520[3]), he was an Italian painter and architect of the High
    Renaissance.
I like his talent. His masterpieces always contain his mind, we can feel
his emotion when we enjoy his painting ,his masterpieces give us a
magnificent and placid feeling just like the feeling that Raffaello gives to
    us.

  15. I think i enjoy a lot in painting and i particularly like Chinese artist Qi BaiShi. He is a talented artist in drawing shrimp, and his shrimp is unique. I think he is the only one artist can draw such an incredible painting. Meanwhile his shrimp is vivid, you could see the shrimps are swimming on the paper! It is a little bit exaggerated. His success implies us" keep a dream in your heart, and fight for it,also never give up!' There are a lot of talented Chinese artists, and they are good at drawing different objects. Chinese literature is really attractive. In my opinion, I think concentration and observation are the most important parts in painting. If you are concentrated enough, and you will paint roundly in every aspect, meanwhile, if you observe carefully, you will create a great job with all the characteristics of that object has. I like arts,in addition,I hope one day, there will be more and more people to know Chinese paintings and inveterate Chinese literature!

  16. In my impression Leonardo da Vinci is a mysterious artist. He was born on April 15, 1452 in Vinci, Italy. He was very intelligent when he was a little boy, he liked trying a lot of things, thought that difficult even impossible for him. When he was 14, he became one of the best painters.
Actually he was not only a painter, but also he was a scientist, a designer and so on. However, he chose art as his profession. He had a lot
of famous works, like The last supper, Mona Lisa. The common of these works is all of these are very mysterious like Leonardo. Now a lot of artists and scientists research his works for whole life, and a lot of mysterious stories about him and his works, but nobody knows the truth.
Several years ago, I saw a Documentary,I was really scared by it.
I like very much her smile is affecting,it looks like a real woman smiles to you. So I think it the highest level in the world.
Leonardo da Vinci represents a generation of artists.

  17. Honesty, I know nothing about art. I have no idea what makes a great painting and what not. But I do have this special feelings about
mystical style, like Alice in wonderland's style. I like when a picture has a lot of different kind of blue. I don't really know about artists, but I do like the Starry Night paint by Van Gogh. It's really cool that he actually painted that picture in the mental hospital.

Whenever I saw good-looking illustrations or pattern before, I would put them down on canvas. Now, although I don’t have a favorite artist, and don’t know the artists and their works, my favorite styles are bright paintings, sketches and the ones that can show authors’ feelings. What’s more, I admire painters who can draw people and objects true to life.

  19. My favorit artist is Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo da Vinci (April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519) was an Italian Renaissance polymath: painter, sculptor, architect. The Mona Lisa is the most famous and most parodied portrait and The Last Supper is the most reproduced religious painting of all time. I think the most of important thing for artists to make a great work of art is inspiration. People always say "Success is made by 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration", but I think the 1% inspiration is much important than that 99% perspiration. This is just my opinion.

  20. My favorite artist is Da Vinci-one of the famous artists in the world. He is one of the Three Heroes of the Italian Renaissance. I think he is a genius, because he not only accomplished in painting, but also in the invention, music, medicine, ect. My favorite painting is Mona Lisa. In this painting the most charming thing in the picture is her smile. When you look at this picture, you can see the Mona Lisa is looking at you with her mysterious smile. But at this time, you can’t know why she smiled and what she thought about. This is probably an unsolved mystery that Da Vinci left to future generations. I like Da Vinci very much.

  21. To be honest, paintings are not my hobby, but I like to see good paintings. Through paintings we can figure out how the painter was feeling while he made it, and how was the society situation of his time, because it has influence over painter's mind. My favorite artist is "Tarsila do Amaral," she is from Brazil and lived in the 20th century. I like her works because the showed through them many conflicts of Brazilian society at this time, doing many critics against problems society and against the government, trying to say what was wrong. For a good painting express and shows the painter's ideas, and show how he feels over his life and the environment where he is living,

Da Vinci is famous with his Mona Lisa painting, however, i'm interested in his journal, it's awesome!!!. finally in my opinion, the thing which make a great work of art is not how they draw, it's about how they color it. although the drawing is not good but if we know how to mix the color together and make the picture become real. that's is a great work of art!!!

  30. Paul Gauguin is my favorite artist. He was a famous and successful artist. He born in Paris, France. He was a leading Post-Impressionist artist. Gauguin, as a painter, sculptor, print-maker, ceramist, and writer, was very important in the Symbolist movement. I like his art because his works reflected unique sense of rhyme scheme, and his paintings were colorful and coordinating. In my opinion, emotion is crucial to make a great work of art. It is emotion that can touch an artist’s soul which may stimulate inspiration.

When I watch a painting, I try to feel the emotion or the artist. For example some painter use a lot of gray, black and deep blue color on the sky. It makes me thinking. What is the specific emotion while the artist choses that color. Maybe he was sad. he show us surge of the terrible ocean. It might since he was angle or he worship the power of nature.
I have a lot of fun on that.

I learned painting when I was young, but at last I give up, cause I really think I can't do well on painting. So when I see people can painting really well, I really envy those people. I always take photos to record some beautiful views or some events or people. I guess back to many years ago people use painting to do the same things as camera. But I don't know why the interesting of the art became less and less when I grew up. Until now, I don't paint any more and I just enjoy watching the work of art usually. I'd like to feel the mood and the thinking from the artist. I try to imagine the environment and to understand the meaning of the picture. It also is a joy in my life~
I don't have the favorite artist. I think they're all very good! ( Maybe the reason is that I can not draw very well...) When I was sophomore last year, my classmate Jasper and me made a PPt about the famous French artist- Millet in Ell2. At that time, learned too much things about the artist. After years of painful anxiety and frequent bouts of mental illness, he died aged 37 from a gunshot wound, generally accepted to be self-inflicted (although no gun was ever found). His work was then known to only a handful of people and appreciated by fewer still.(FromWikipedia)In his all drawing I like the Road with Cypress and Star.
