Marsdon Hartley was an American Painter in the 20th century, and he spent a lot of time in Maine, painting landscapes and seascapes. So, here's an image to take with you as you leave for the summer. Write whatever comes to mind as you look ahead to summer. I know most of you are planning on taking some classes over the summer, but I also hope you have a chance to relax. - I have been a language teacher (ESL/ELL, French) for 30 years. I have taught in public and private schools, immersion programs, refugee programs, adult/continuing education, elementary, middle, and high school as well as university. Currently I teach ELL at a high school somewhere in New England.
I really want to take the summer vacation. Summer is coming. And I also can do a lot of things in this summer vacation. The summer vacation is very important and interesting. I will go to other city and play some funny activities and play sports with my friends and my family.I also will take the classes in the summer vacation. Because next year i need to take some tests. For example, the Sat tests.The most important thing I think i need to do in the summer vacation is relax. It is very necessary. In the end. I hope I can have a good summer vacation

ReplyDeleteFirst, I need to take SAT and TOLLFE lessons because I will be a junior next year. It will takes me 3 weeks. I want to meet my friends in China and talk with them about my American school life. I also want to learn how to play tennis this summer vacation.
I hope that I can spend a happy summer in China.
Summer Vacation is coming!
ReplyDeleteWe will go back China to spend our time. I have already made a plan about my vacation. I will go to travel with my parents. And I also want to visit my grandparents and my cousins.
Of couse I will go to Shanghai for my TOFEL and I want to improve my English. I will be a Junior next year. So it's important to get good grades in TOFEL and SAT. Maybe I will take some class about Musical instruments because I want to learn more.
Before go back China, I want to get good grades in the final exam.
The summer vacation had come round again. I was happy that I could forget about school at least for a while. Lest I fool around all through this summer vacation, I made a plan as to how to spend it. First, I thought I should go over all those things my teachers taught in the previous term so that I could have a better understanding of them. Then I thought I should take up some forms of exercise, such as walking, running and rowing, to keep me physically strong. It stood to reason that with such a good plan I should make the best of my vacation time. I did, because I lived up to what I had planned.
ReplyDeleteAs summer comes to my mind, the first image is air conditioner.I believe this summer I will spend a ton of time with air conditioner.Believe or not, I'll stay in my room for all the time. Of course, desserts are an important part for summer. I'm sure I'll eat a lot of cold food which make me stomachache. But eating desserts worth it.Summer vacation means I'll have two months free time and I'll spend almost one month with my grandparents. The truth is I need to stay in Beijing for my SAT class.I might have to get up at six o'clock everyday because my home is far from the place where I take the class!

ReplyDeleteThe first word that summer reminds me is: insects.
Insects are dirty; insects can hurt people; insects can spread the virus; insects can make annoying noises; insects are disgusting......
In fact I don't hate insects, I really like bees and ants. But I have a huge amount of insects come out at the same time at summer. It's kind of scary thing for me.
I met something unforgettable in the present. There are always some insects rest on the ceiling at night. Insects' lives are very short, so they could die in the morning. And they would drop down to the bed from the ceiling. One of the dropped on my grandma's bed. It was really lucky that the insect didn't drop into my grandma's mouth, wasn't it? Maybe this kind of thing has happened but people don't because they are fall in sleep, who knows!
Another reason I dislike summer is the hot weather and the strong sunshine.
Yes I like wearing thin clothes and slippers, I'm not happy about wearing too many heavy clothes. I don't like sweating and I hate the feeling when wet clothes stick to the body. It's real very dirty, uncomfortable and unsightly.
I don't care if my skin becomes black or red cause of sunburn. I just feel nervous and irritable about the strong sunshine and I cannot raise my head and cannot see the road in front of me.
By the way, I like autumn. Spring is a season which is easy to be ill or sick. Winter is too cold, and there are always some troubles on movement. Spring is not too cold or too hot, and red maples are beautiful in autumn.
Except for preparing toefl test, I'm planning to go on a trip, me and my family are planing to go to Taiwan, because we've never been there, and I'm really excited about it, it's going to be fun. Also, I will spend more times to hang out with my friends who I haven't seen for like about half year, and I think we'll have a blast, hopefully we can have a really fun time. As summer comes to my mind, it makes me think of water and beach, because I love beach and having fun in the water, also having sunbath, playing on the beach could be a wonderful thing ever!
ReplyDeleteI love summer!!! One of the reasons is I was born in summer! Summer means I don't have to go to school and I will have a long vacation to stay with parents and friends. I can't wait until summer! I'll come back to China on summer vacation. I really miss my parents and friends.
ReplyDeleteI don't like hot weather, but I like staying in cool water in summer. I love hanging out with friends and going to the beach. I'm going to see a animation exhibition on vacation.
I'm going to take class during summer holiday to prepare Sat test.
Anyway, No school is the best thing for me. :)

Oh~~the summer vacation is coming!!! I except lots of food and fruits. In the summer, I don't like to go to the outside because it's so hot. I prefer to eat the watermelon ,lie on the sofa and watch TV. Is that sounds cool?HAHA~~ It makes me relax a lot. I don't need to think.Only thing I need to do is relax. I can't bear the high temperature. If I want to go outside, I will choose a place which has air conditioner and wifi. In the summer, I like swimming. But if the swimming pool has less people in there is much better. I want to travel.But I will spend nearly one month on Toefl.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I won't have time to travel. If I can travel, I"ll have another thing to consider. I should go to Korea ? Tibet? Tahiti? I' m so confuse.
When this summer vacation is coming, I can have lots of time to relax. Why use "this"? Because before this year, I have to take many classes in summer. In China, most students study at this time. They all want to use this long vacation to learn more knowledge, then they can get higher grade when they back school. But always study is not good. We should go outside, to have some activities. Study and rest mix together is the best way for us.
ReplyDeleteSo in this summer, I'll plan to travel with my best friends. We will go somewhere is cool and interesting, and stay there maybe two weeks, without our parents~ Wow! It makes me excited. But the bad news is my mother told me if I want to go outside in this summer, I must work in her company about one month. She said:" No work, no happy." What should I say about it ?......
I am very looking forward to this summer. I miss Chinese food, my friends, my family and everything. This is my first time to leave home so far. I think I will be fine without family, but when I heard my mother's voice I found I miss them. During this summer, I will visit my grandparents. They lives in different part of China, I didn't see them for two years. I will also go to see my friends, talk to them about myself and America life. I still have to improve my english during this summer, I will come back next year.
ReplyDeleteOnly ten more days to go! I can’ t wait to leaving! Summer means vacation for me. I have more than two months to relax. I don’t really have a specific vacation plan, but I will eat a lot of spicy foods for sure! I prefer to stay at home more because of the hot weather. I will prepare for my next junior year, such as I have to take some toefl classes. I want to travel to South Korea to listen to some concerts or meet stars, but it’s kind of impossible for me in this summer. I just finished my last journal!!!

Of course, I will visit my relatives. And I aslo will go to my old school to see my classmates and my teachers. After that, I think I will go to Beijing to rake some classes for my toefl. As you know, I am a junior in the next year, so this text is very important for me. After that, I wil have a trip with my friends. And I aslo will have fun with my friends who live in Beijing. ReplyDeleteSummer vacation is the longest vacation in the year.But in the coming summer vacation, i will be working hard on my SAT.Studying is important! But i think relax is more important, so before i study for the SAT, i will go to Taiwan with five friends.I am really looking forward to the trip!Can't wait to summer.I know i will be really busy next year, so i will spend times on entertaining myself. Hope everyone will have a awesome summer vacation, and get ready for next year!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy summer vacation very much. Because summer vacation is the longest vacation of the year. We have more than fifty days to rest. Though it is very hot, we can either go to swim or stay in the air-conditioned room . In the evening, I like to go shopping with my friends. We can eat many things in summer, such as ice creams, watermelons, grapes, and so on.In summer, I always go on a trip with my parents. It's a good chance for us to visit some nice interesting places.

Also, i will take a SAT class to improve my english, gets ready for the regular english class. Next year , i will be a senior, so i know i will be very busy next year. and i will use half of summer for relax. at the end, i will miss you Mr,Griffin.
ReplyDeleteSummer vacation is coming soon,in two weeks! I can't wait for it. I can't wait to go back home and see my parents and my friends in China. I will spend few days shopping in Hongkong with my parents when I arrive in Hongkong. After that, I will sleep two days so that I can be sober. When I go back to Guangzhou, I will take a SAT class with one or two friends. My friends asked me to play Nike League, which is a basketball league held for youth. If time permits, I will play with them. Although it will be a very busy summer, I will spend some days travelling. Taiwan is a good choice. But I need to spend most of the time studying in this summer. So sad.
ReplyDeleteI am so excited that the summer is coming! It's only 13 days left!!!! Summer vacation is the longest vacation in the year but it's not enough time for me to do my things and to stay with my parents! Oh, one more thing--to eat!! I miss the food in China so much! During the summer, I will take the toefl class. I wish I can have a good grade on my toefl test! Maybe I will travel to some place or just stay at home because the weather is so hot!!!!! I prefer enjoy the air conditioning and eat watermelon when I watch korean drama! Hahah~ If I can, I want to go home and enjoy the summer vacation now!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so exciting that summer vacation is coming. I can't wait for go back home. I miss my family and my friends so much. So the first thing I want to do as soon as I arrive China is meeting them. I'm going to have a big party to have fun with them. And I also want to travel with my friend. The place we go might be SuZhou, YunNan or Beijing. I always believe that people should travel more different places when they are young. Of course I'm also going to have TOEFL class during July. It would be a long class and I have to study hard. It must be tried and happy. What's more, I want to study French after TOEFL class because I will take French class in next year. In addition, maybe I can find a part-time Job.
ReplyDeleteThis is what we expect for so long, the summer vacation is coming. It's exciting for everybody as we're students or for teachers. So our family got a nice plan for this summer, we're going to travel from south which is my hometown to Beijing, it's going to be a long trip but I'm really looking forward to it because I've never been there, and as it's the capital of China, I think it's necessary for a Chinese person to take a look at there. Also, I heard the food in Beijing is fabulous, I'll have some good restaurants to reward myself for the effort of this school year. After Beijing trip, I'll probably be hanging out with my friends back to my hometown who I haven't seen for like forever, so I think I'll have a wonderful vacation.

ReplyDeleteI like summer,and I don't like summer.What I like about summer is the sky and the ocean.And during this summer vacation,I am going to Maldives,which is a very perfect place for summer.In Maldives,the sky and the ocean are the same color,the ocean is very clear there,you can see the shell though the sea and some kinds of algae.The view over there just take my soul away,can't wait to go that.I wish that day is tomorrow.
The reason why I don't like summer is that I don't like tan.My mother and my grandmother want my skin to be white.They think a girl should be completely white to make a boy like you.At first,I really disagreed their opinion.But,little by little,I think have a white skin is kind of good.(I have no reason...)
I know that summer vacation is coming,everyone including me is very happy.But I am still kind of sad,because we are going to leave TA,and I know I am gonna miss ELL class so much.
This summer will be a really busy summer for me.I will stay in NY for about 2 month study design and drawing. Also i will have a college trip around such as Roland.The most challenge things for me is cooking.I don't want eat outside everyday,so i need to learn it. !!Have a happy summer guys !!!^^
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait for summer vacation. i will learn sat classes in ShangHai, i think that should be interesting. And i want to meet those graduated students in there, i miss them already. I think Mr.Griffin you should give us some relax before summer vacation,specially about the final exam. How about we just take a super easy final exam and that makes everyone happy. We don't want bring a bad motion back. I think that is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I expect for so long, summer vacation, it's coming!! I will go back to China in the summer vacation. I like summer, although it is so hot but I still like it. I can go to the beach and swim in the sea. I can also enjoy the sunshine and hang out with my friends to eat ice-cream. I can't wait for coming home. I haven't came home for almost one year, I want to stay with my family. I learned many things in this year. I thought my mom was nagging, and I often got angry with her before. But now I realize that I was wrong, my mom always thinks about me,she always take care of me. So I shouldn't think that my mom is so nagging. She just all think about me. So I would spend most of my vacation time with my family. I must learn how to treasure time.

ReplyDeleteI want to have a great summer because it is my last summer in America. I will stay with my aunt in old orchard beach and a lot of my friends are coming to the US. i hope it will be nice time to see my friends.I will go to the beach every day because summer is very hot here and it is good time for swim on the ocean.
Also I want to go to the New York because it is beautiful city in America and i want to go to Russia because actually i miss my friends from my hometown. I am going to study in summer because i will take a test next school year.
I hope my summer vacation will be good.
I agree that we must have some time to relax, even though we are planning take some class over this summer. It's irrefutable that I am going to take some class over the summer too. I love summer, because I can go to the beach, which is the event I prefer most. Having time on the beach is wonderful. Especially the sunshine, it make me feel comfortabele. The other thing I prefer to do on the beach is having picnic after swimming.

Be honest I don't like summer, because it's so hot. But I like summer vacation. It's only 9 days left. I'm very excited. I can do something what I want during the summer vacation. Many guys need to take SAT or TOLLFE lessons, but I don't need that because next year I'm sophomore. So this vacation I want to climb some famous mountains such as Five Great Mountains,Four Sacred Mountains of Buddhism and so on. I'm excited about my plan. I can't wait. By the way, I hope everyone will have a good vacation.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we are looking forward to the summer vacation. I have 9 days to go and I can't wait to go back my home. However, I am going to take some prep classes and study in this vacation. As I am going to be a senior, it is important that to prepare more before I come back to school. Except for studying, I am going to travel with my friends also. For sure I am going to spend more time with my family since I am going to leave within two months. I hope everyone can enjoy their vacation and get enough rest ready for next year. Study hard ! Play hard !
ReplyDeleteSummer vacation, what an excited thing for me. I believe that most of the students expect for the summer for a long time. As a student, one of the most important benefits for us is that we can relax ourselves in summer vacation. I will think about the sunshine, beach, and surfing in the sea when someone reminds me that summer is coming. Unfortunately, I will take the toefl and SAT lessons during this summer. You know that having class in the vacation is the thing, which may make people unpleasant. Besides the lessons, I hope I will enjoy my summer day in China. I plan to have some party with my junior high school and senior high school friends. Maybe we will watch the film together or have a sport meeting. By the way, I will go back to my high school in Shanghai, and maybe I will have a lesson with them to review my high school life in China. In a word, I love summer, I love vacation.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the summer, but also, my summer is going to be a busy summer. I am taking SAT class every singel day because I need to improve my Sat scores. In the mean time, I will go out with my family and enjoy my mum's food. I will go out and work out 3 times a week because I don't want to lose my shape because my mum's food is soooooo delicious and I can't help myself to eat it!

ReplyDeleteit will be a busy summer. i will take TOEFL classes during the vacation, and the beginning of the next year i will take TOEFL test.
during the summer vacation, i won't just study, i also will play tennis with my friends, and continue learning cello.

Finally, the summer vacation is coming! There are three words come to my mind as I look ahead to summer：ice-cream，air-conditioner and swim. During the summer vacation, I don't have so many plan for study. I will just take common English class and might learn to play tennis. The favourite sport that I like to do is swimming. It's cool and can also exercise myself. I always eat a lot of ice-cream in summer. In Hangzhou, China, the weather is really hot in summer. So we open air-conditioner inside of doors all the time. And my biggest plan for the vacation is traveling. I have lots of places that I want to go but I have not decided yet. I hope the summer vacation will come as soon as possible!

The nice weather of summer makes people excited . In addition , the summer vacation this year is special . I am going to Africa with Howard for volunteer ! After that , we are going to visit Beijing . Beside this , I have to do some study on SAT in this summer . So , this summer is gonna be fun and busy !!
ReplyDeleteIn my mind, summer is the holiday and home. It is the home time! After 1 year's study, I finally can go home! I want summer to be closer and closer. For in Maine, I prefer summer than winter. Because it's too cold in winter here. But in my hometown, I prefer winter than summer, because it's too hot in my hometown. So at this time, I mean I neither like hot or cold. During the summer vacation, I will study in the capital of China for English. But at the same time, I will play games and do some sports to prepare for the coming school days.
ReplyDeleteWith the time goes by, I have finished my first year in American high school. The summer vacation is coming soon and I have planned a lot of things that need to be done in this summer vacation. It will be a very busy, but also useful summer vacation. First of all, I will be a junior next year, so I should prepare for the SAT and TOFEL test. Next year will be a tough year for me because I have chosen several difficult courses, such as AP physics, and Honors Chemistry. I think I have to preview them for a little bit so that I won’t feel such difficult like the other people said. What’s more, I plan to learn something new during the summer vacation. For instance, my mother will teach me how to cook and my father will teach how to drive a car. I guess that will be very fun. Maybe these things are the ways that I can feel relaxed during the two months, and I can’t wait to learn more life skills!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited that a long Summer Vacation is coming. The first thing come to my head is I can see my old friends in Beijing and we will have a great time this summer. We already plan many things we are going to do. But when I come back China, they will also have 1 month for study until their vacation, and I will be free for nearly one month, so I maybe take a TOFEL class and take a test, it's my first time to take this test, so I will work hard to have a good grade. Although study is the biggest thing, relax is more important, maybe I will go to a foreign country for holiday this vacation. I hope I will have a wonderful vacation this summer.

ReplyDeleteAs a teenager, what can I do for myseIf in this summer? Just imagine, I can travel around in the distance ,with my friends.We can feel the nature together under this uncommon chance though we have different feeling about the same season. With the distant harbor comes the bursts of flute, I may really feel the summer flavor and relax my mind and body, If you were to see the coastline is intersected with sky
Furthermore, I am planning to do some meaningful things instead of boring life. For instance, I can get some exercise after daylife and walk for a while .Senior as we are, we also should do some social work to experience post-study time. But I have lots of classes and I need to do homework, With such pressure, I want to listen to delighted music and chat with close friends on the internet in the summer yard.
With lots of imaginations, just stretch our arms and embrace the whole summer.
Summer vacation is coming with so many exams and finals and I am so sorry that I totaly forgot this Ell journal. I plan to go to Tanzania with Terrence to do some vollunteer things. We will work in a orphan to help street children. It sounds exciting and challenging. We are looking for immunizations and travel drugs these days and we are really busy in preparing our bags. I can't wait to go home but we are doing something more important.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I feel so sad that I will leave Mr.Griffin and our lovely and adorable ELL III class for 2 months! Secondly, I feel so much pressure if I am talking about the upcoming summer vacation. It is due to I have to take so many classes during this break and those classes are based on maybe one course. "TOEFL!" This language exam is so difficult and challenge to me. But don't worry Mr. Griffin, I am gonna have some fun! For example, go to movie theaters with my friends, go swimming, go climb a mountain and so on. I do believe that " healthy body, healthy mind." That's why I am going to some sports during this summer, even i have a busy agenda.
ReplyDeleteNext school year, I will be a senior. So many things are waiting for me. I have to confront those things and do well. Running is still my best way to escape reality and relax.
I'm kind of sad for going back.I know if I go back to China,I will not return to Thornton for next year.I'm planning to take basketball lessons and go to gym everyday.I know that would be hard for me,because I always stay in the house.Even though I'm going to try.Another big event is I'm going to take TOFEL test during this summer.This is not a big deal,I'm not expect I can have 90 or 100 something.I don't even want to get some vocabs this summer,I just want to keep reading books.That helps me to get a better reading skills,also in the writing skills.Overall,for my summer time is practicing,gaming and reading.That's my plan.Bye,Maine,Bye Thornton!

ReplyDeleteI don't have any ideas what I am going to do. I like the weather here. It is very warm but there are a lot of rains. I like swimming. I will go to the beach to swim. Also, I am going to study some English, Math and etc. I must study because I will pass a huge exam for the Russian University. Accordingly, I took hard subjects for next year.
In my opinion summer vacation will help me. My first year in America has been very arduous. I need to gain a lot energy for senior year.
Overall, I am going to have a great deal of carefree days. It is my last summer in America. It is a momentous time for me.
