Journal Question #25

This painting, by Edward Hopper, is called "Rooms by the Sea."  Among other things, it reminds me of the summer, so I think this is a good end-of-school-year image to post.  There's also something frightening about this painting to me; it has the qualities of a nightmare despite the sunlight, the blue sky, and the blue sea.  What's your reaction?

  3. Something hide behind the wall, like old sofa, black chest. These old things are scary to me. I want to live in a house towards the sea. But if I live in this house, I will drop into the ocean when I want to go out. I agree with Mr.Griffin.
    - -! The room is shady. I don't really like this painting.

  8. This is a great painting. I think the painter want to use this painting to show his feelings. Have two ways to describe it. First one: the name of this painting 'rooms by the sea', i think it sounds pretty cool when i first time to heard it. but when i really saw the picture, i can't tell it is cool but uncomfortable. Because the two sides of this painting can not even be together, its like totally different, the room will remind me building and normal life, the sea will remind me beach and vacation , so i think painter's life must be boring and disappointed him , he wants his life be better and more fun. Second one : Mr griffin i don't know what make you frightened , but for me it is ocean, because when you living a room like that , and when you want to go to outside. After you open the door, all the things you can see is ocean , i mean where you can take your first step? So , also i think the painter must be confused about his future, and he doesn't know what he needs to do next .

  9. Interesting comments, Peter. The empty rooms themselves don't suggest that much is happening in the present, let alone the future. Outside contains more possibility than inside - alas, we are all stuck with the house we live in.

In any case, I hope everybody gets a chance to experience a wonderful summer - by the sea or elsewhere.
