Journal Question #24

The Third of May 1808, by Francisco Goya (1746-1828) of Spain, depicts one horror of war: the execution of civilians (not soldiers) by military forces.  This particular war is known as "The Peninsular War," when France invaded Spain in the early 1800's.  Respond to it in any way you like.

    American history is intersting . I love it . This artwork show us some soilders kill the people. I feel not so well . Because people haven't got the gun. It's very pitiful !

    Every country has its own past, include war, kill and split. Every inch of the land is with the blood of martyrs. I hate wars, but we need to face the true history, both the development and the dark times, they built the world today.

    I hate wars! During wars, there'll be so many people die. There'll be full of the smell of dead bodies and the sound of weapons in the country. Don't you hate that??
    Some people are enjoying the pain of people, some people will endure the pain. That's not fair.

    i'd love to learn some history about war. i do hate war. But we couldn't stop war happen if it is necessary. Some time things always is out of your control, if you try to think about war, you'll see there's money and power beside the war. If we want the war stop happening , we should let the "powerful" and " rich" these two guys to stop getting more power and more money from the war, but the point is all the things that they care about is money and power and war...

    The man with the white shirt really stands out, maybe he is the leader of the Spanish people on the painting.

    One interesting aspect of the painting is that the faces of the soldiers (the shooters) are hidden, but the faces of the people (victims) are visible. Why do you think the artist chose to paint the scene in this way?
